Research holds promise for herpes vaccine

October 13, 2006 |

A study by a Montana State University researcher suggests a new avenue for developing a vaccine against genital herpes and other diseases caused by herpes simplex viruses. In a study published earlier this year in the Virology Journal, MSU virologist William Halford showed that mice vaccinated with a live, genetically-modified herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) showed no signs of disease 30 days after being exposed to a particularly lethal “wild-type” strain of the virus.A study by a Montana State University researcher suggests a new avenue for developing a vaccine against genital herpes and other diseases caused by herpes simplex viruses.

In a study published earlier this year in the Virology Journal, MSU virologist William Halford showed that mice vaccinated with a live, genetically-modified herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) showed no signs of disease 30 days after being exposed to a particularly lethal “wild-type” strain of the virus.

In contrast, a second group of mice that received a more conventional vaccine died within six days of being exposed to the same “wild-type” strain.

“We have a clear roadmap for producing an effective live vaccine against genital herpes,” said Halford, who works in MSU’s Department of Veterinary Molecular Biology. “Although my studies were performed with HSV-1, the implications for HSV-2-induced genital herpes are clear. Overall the two viruses are about 99 percent genetically identical.”

An estimated 55 million Americans carry herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2), which causes genital herpes. Infection is life-long. Approximately 5 percent of those with genital herpes – 2 million to 3 million Americans – suffer outbreaks one to four times annually. A vaccine offering life-long protection does not exist.

The key to Halford’s research was understanding how the herpes simplex virus overcame the body’s natural defenses.

A cell infected with the herpes simplex virus sends a warning to neighboring cells. This warning — an interferon response — causes neighboring cells to enter “an anti-viral state” akin to putting on a suit of armor, Halford said.

However, herpes produces a protein, ICP0, that tricks every infected cell into destroying its own armor. Once the cell’s armor is gone, the virus can propagate itself and spread to other cells, which are in turn tricked into lowering their defenses.

In his research, Halford created a vaccine where the genetic instructions that make ICP0 were disrupted. Without instructions on how to do its clever ICP0 trick, the virus can still establish an infection in animals, but the spread of the virus is stopped long before disease can occur.

“In short, we can disarm the virus such that it is absolutely unable to cause disease, but is still remarkably potent as a vaccine,” Halford said.

In a human vaccine, the genetic instructions for ICP0 would actually be removed, creating an “attenuated,” or weakened virus. The rest of the herpes simplex virus’ genetic code would remain intact. Measles, mumps, rubella, polio and yellow fever vaccines are all made from attenuated viruses.

Research in recent decades has focused on subunit vaccines, which are made from one piece of a virus (a protein subunit). Subunit vaccines are safer than attenuated virus vaccines because the subunit cannot replicate or cause disease. However, subunit vaccines have proven ineffective in protecting people against persistent infections like genital herpes and AIDS, Halford said.

“From a theoretical standpoint, subunit vaccines are poor mimics of a natural virus infection,” Halford said. “There’s not enough there for our immune systems to build a protective response against the actual virus.”

Halford, 38, is aware that his approach is controversial.

“This is where I’m young enough that I don’t know how long it can take to swing popular opinion among scientists and clinicians,” he said. “I would hope that in five to six years the scientific community would be willing to seriously consider these proposals.”

Halford hopes to find a commercial partner or secure government funding to advance his research toward a human vaccine.

“I’d like to take this concept from the chalkboard to the clinics,” he said.

Developing a vaacccine would be excellent!! Would not have had to go through the hell of realizing that I would have to live with this for life. I had contracted it about 2 years ago. After trying a bunch of ointments, tinctures, etc…I came across this herb called Hypericum mysorense while looking for herbal remedies. I ffinished the course about 6 months ago, and have not had an outbreak since. Definitely worth checking out..

  26. HSV-2-So-What February 18, 2012 at 12:28 am #

It’s pathetic to see how many people in US pay so much attention to such common STD. HSV-1 is actually much, much dangerous than HSV-2 becuase it certain cases can spread to the eyes and brain and then again HSV-2 it is a problem because the stupid stigma of “genital herpes”.

Both Viruses are 99% identical (DNA) they only differ on the “prefer” site of infection. But if you get HSV-1 is “OK” because is acquired mostly through kissing and not sexual intercourse. Well HSV-1 can also infect the genitals (rarely but possible).

How someone in the right mind dare to compare HIV with herpes!!!! Herpes are in most cases only a nuance and nothing else. Stop obsessing about herpes and get on with your life for God sake, have sex, enjoy the fact that you have a harmless STD and not cancer or some other terminal illness. I’m sure you can find plenty of really sick people willing to trade your stupid herpes for theirs ailments.

    Genital Herpes Cures

It is really alarming that 55 millions of Americans are infected and any break through in genital herpes cure is eagerly awaited. Eliminating a protein seems to rob the HSV2 of its killer power, but viruses are known to adapt very quickly. Secondly, what seems to work on mice may not exactly work on humans. Anyhow, best of luck!

Thank you in taking all this initiative.

    *Lesson #1*
They won’t make a vaccine cure available to the public at any price at any point in time. Because even if the government were to charge each vaccine at 25,000$ per shot it wouldn’t compare to each of the 1/4, 8million Americans who have the virus and purchase and stock up on their creams and pills every month ranging anywhere from 30-100+$ monthly (providing you have healthcare or purchase cheap over the counter crap) which only suppress the symptoms but doesn’t completely rid them. It wouldn’t be worth it for them to reveal a cure when the money is so good already. You see, having you and the people after you keep the virus dormant in your bodies and having you come back to them every so often for your quick fix, is constant never ending money for pharmaceutical companies. Valtrex and all that…you see…the world is a college of corporations, execrably determined by the immutable by-laws of business. Essentially the world is a business. There will never be a cure for you…unless, you go to university and study chem/bio both in school and leisurely for fifteen to twenty more years and try to figure out a cure for yourself. Then & only then maybe, you’ll be able to cure yourself. The best part is you will earn millions of dollars annually just to keep the cure under wraps and between you and your colleagues. You will be introduced to flying cars, virtual reality gaming, lifelike robots, Fiber-based nano generator clothing! (<_< really u should look it up) & custom-made organs (<_< can’t profit off a man who has no lungs) before you will ever see a cure for aids herpes or cancer. It’s us against the elite. Will you see Magic Johnson searching or blogging about aids remedies and support groups online? No. He doesn’t have to :) That’s a fact jack, pray, eat well, exercise, laugh, and learn. That is your way out. It’s easier said then done ill tell you that, but it’s the only way. At the end of the day we’re all human and have to deal with this shit. OneLove people _Trae

It seems to me that governments throughout the world have ignored this virus its stated here that over 55million US citizens carry the virus I don,t understand why some one hasent formed a political party and stand for election demanding funding from the government to find a treatment for herpies (vacine or preventable medication) surely if 55million people voted for that person the US government would have to do something about it

This paper leaves me with a bunch of questions. Will this new vaccine or the research around it lead to something that will help those that are aready infected with the HSV ? Or is this just going to prevent those that take if from becoming infected? Seems to me that there are still a lot of questions to be answered and that we remain years away from any help of importance. I like to keep my readers abreast of any new developments at and hope that you will be bring more “exacting” information to light regarding this research.

  35. Sheldon Miller April 2, 2011 at 12:52 am #

It is important to see your doctor right away for treatment for the infection if you find yourself suffering from any herpes symptoms. Genital herpes can be managed quite effectively if your doctor examines the male herpes symptoms soon after you become aware of them. Suffering from the disease does not mean that life, as you know it will end. You can still live a normal and active life, both outside and inside the bedroom.

With this said, the psychological effects can become a problem. Men have been known to become extremely depressed, due to fear of having more outbreaks or infecting their partner. By learning about the true risks of genital herpes, you can start to consider male herpes symptoms and outbreaks a minor nuisance instead of something to be feared.

Correction, I researched recent results of these herpes vaccine trials at herpes symptoms and it seems that the HerpeVac trial was found ineffective in women. I do understand from further research that there are more vaccine trials and treatment options in the works at multiple pharma companies.

It sounds like you are a very selfish, unloving person. One who is always ready to blame someone, and not think about the other person involved. Mr. Flowers,

It is extremely offensive and honestly disgusting that you can find it in yourself to advertise on a website where people are distraught and desperate. It is not even worth taking my time to describe the science behind the virus and how you are a scam artist and complete and utter bullshitter. You should take a look in the mirror and reevaluate your life if your interested in cures. I am not even religious, but if they’re was a hell, i would hope that you wind up there. Do not take advantage of people going through a hard time and propose that you have “the answer.”

To the actual people reading this who have herpes and may be down – don’t be. You will be okay. The virus becomes less severe over time. It is very common and people are more accepting of it than you think. 1/5 people have HSV-2. It’s estimated that >75% of the global population is infected with either HSV-1 or HSV-2. Most people are asymptomatic. Since they already have the virus, however, they have formed immunity and most likely will not become symptomatic even if exposed to someone who is symptomatic. Regardless, sex should always be abstained from during an outbreak because the virus is very contagious at this point. If you keep your body healthy for long enough (stop smoking, start exercising, eat right and take vitamins), outbreaks will most likely go away. When they are latent (no visible outbreaks), they can be contagious but not too a great extent. If an outbreak does come back, take acyclovir and that’s it. If you get them recurrently no matter what, take acyclovir daily. this will also reduce your chances of spreading to a partner because you will not shed virus even while it is dormant.

What is most important in this difficult and trying time, is to keep your strength. Retain who you are. Keep your character and your resolve to overcome. Positive thinking can go a long way. There are actually scientific reports based on that. Do not resort to some scum (ie David Flowers) trying to take advantage of you. Please. Read, educate yourself, educate others.

The only option my friend is communication. Forgive me if this sounds cliche but if this woman truly loves you then i dont think you have anything to worry about. Ive recently been diagnosed myself, and like you it wasnt the virus that bothered me, i could handle that. The thought of losing the one i loved is what tugged on my heart strings, or worse passing the virus on to her. She was with me the morning i got my test results and without missing a beat she looked at me and said ” baby i love you and this doesnt change a thing” She admired how honest and upfront i was with her about everything. So if i have any advice to give you its to be open and honest, i promise she will respect you alot more for your honesty and courage. Best wishes my friend.

Anon, please help end herpes once and for all by signing this petition.

Research into patentable cures has run it’s course and it is time we start a proper science that utilizes man’s own immunity for cures that cannot be patented.

You have all the tools you need to cure herpes and all that is lacking is the knowledge and understanding. Help me make this knowledge and understanding available to the public. There is no woo woo or hamana hamana, just a more righteous form of science, consequently a righteous form that can’t be made profitable.

I contracted HSV2 when I was young during a date rape. I didn’t know I had it for years (I could give a long background story, but won’t,, however I know without a doubt this is when it happened, I was tested at the time, but my results were negative), until I was already married and had given birth to one child. We were planning for our second when I found out. I was shocked and horrified. I was disgusted by myself, my future, the danger I thought I’d put my first child in (vaginal delivery). But more than anything I didn’t know how to tell my husband or what he would think, what would become of our marriage.

When I finally told my husband, he didn’t bat an eye. He doesn’t care. It hasn’t changed a thing in our relationship and we went ahead and had that second child. We still don’t use condoms, he hates them and always has. He doesn’t care to get tested and doesn’t care if he ever contracts it. He says I’m “so hot I blister.”

So, it’s very possible you are in love with someone that accepts you for you and doesn’t have conditions on your relationship.

thats it, its a word. reading it, thinking it, hearing it can be bad at times, i know. its like the antichrist of music to our ears. it can make people instantly feel nauseous or depressed.

before i had it, i was like everyone else – joking about it, saying how much it would suck to have, looking down on girls if i heard they had it. then the doctor told me i had it and boom, my life was fucked.

my life turned out to be fucked for all of a week or so. i read everything on the internet and yadda yadda and you get facts and then you get ambiguities and yadda yadda and some blah blah until who cares anymore. lets close the window and open up espn or whatever. go out and hang out with your friends.

my initial breakout was the worst like they say and the only one i was really cognizant of. in the past year, i may have had 3 outbreaks. i have a bottle of 30 valtrex that costed 15 bucks and ill take 1 pill for 3 days. then see ya.

basically, my point is to stop generating so much stress from yourself. its absolutely understandable for everyone here to be so concerned about themselves and about infecting others. however, the root of this concern is from the stigma. in terms of health disorders, herpes is like a broken nail. its an inconvenience. it is nearly impossible that it will ever disable you in any way other than minor pain or irritation. it happens a few times a year for the first year or two, then outbreaks typically drop off. on the spectrum of medical illness, doctors are not too concerned with herpes because it really does not have many associated pathologies or consequences to health.

unfortunately, thats the reason why there isnt a lot of funding for research. its not some secret double O mission by the government and whatever bull some people throw out there. and when you browse the internet, theres one idiot after another talking out of their ass. these blogs can be good for people to provide support and advice to those having a tough time. it shouldnt be for religious fanatics, condemning sexual habits, and definitely NOT for proposing bologna drugs such as “oxygenation therapy.” As a current medical student, I think its important for people to critically assess their sources. to get some things straight, this is a virus that stays hidden within nerve cells of your body. it can go to periods of latency where it resides dormant in the cell, and then activate and give you a rash. acyclovir and other antiviral drugs can kill the virus only at this time when it is outside of a cell. please look for information in the right places. there are no one minute cures, no electric shocks, oxygenations, and no miracle drugs…yet. But seriously, go to and search for herpes or hsv review. that is reliable and it is what doctors read. at least go to webmd or wikipedia, but dont buy into idiots like orlando cruz jr who find the need to write in all caps.

lastly, to really solidify the whole issue with herpes. just relax. ive lived with it for one year and its really not a big deal. at first i was bugging. it went away. i was still hesitant to have sex with girls or bring it up. but then i said to myself, “just tell her, if she says no then whatever, youll get another one tomorrow… if you dont just man up and tell her, your definitely not getting any, so take the shot.” i dont want to be dying one day and be thinking i didnt have any sex in my life bc i was too afraid to tell someone i had herpes.

so ive told people. and….i havent had an issue with any girls. and you know, i read stupid tips on how to present it and what not, but then I just did me. and you know what? just do you. just tell whoever you’re looking to get with what herpes entails. if they dont want to go further, then at least you tried. by just going back to my regular habits i realized im back to being me. im not in some “herpes prison” without freedom. its the same me. i get literally a redness for about 3 days and then its gone. most people dont know what it is. they know the word. they understand the connotation and thats all. enlighten them a little bit. physically, herpes (at least for me) is not a major issue. as we learn this from experience, we can also teach others about it. when people understand the reality and get beneath the stigmal sheath, it becomes a lot easier for everyone. trust me. so stop viewing your life as a nightmare or feeling like you want to hit the rewind button. You can’t. Live – just as you have always done. When you lift the mental prison that you impose upon yourself, blogs, research, and cures will just go on the backburner.

I’ve been reading everyone’s posts here and must say that I have found some relief in the stories (so thank you all for that).

I was just told today of terrible news. As someone here had mentioned, the doctor told me in such an arrogant way; as if I was merely an additional statistic.

That isn’t what bugs me though. See, I became a single father at a young age. Things were a mess and I basically became “undatable” in my own mind. So I travelled all over Canada and had sex with random women every chance I got. Lucky for me I didn’t pick anything up (well, unless this is karma’s ass-whooping delay).

I never saw it coming, but I’ve actually fallen in love with someone that isn’t my daughter. The last few months have been heart-fluttering and unlike anything I’ve ever experienced.

Tonight I’m stuggling with the potential loss of the greatest girl; the same girl that has made me a better man. I don’t often ask for help, but I know there are others like me who’ve had to break the news to the love of their life.

I never thought I’d find love, and now I’m so afraid to lose it :(

I been reading this post, and I found out 4 years ago i had it. I guess i could say im blessed in a away. Except for the first six months i havent had an out break in 3 yrs an therefore dont take the medicine for it. Best advice i can give you is dont this thing ruin your life. I let a man and wanted to be with me go because i was to scared to tell him and now he married. I loved this man so much and basically pushed him into the arms of someone else because i didnt want to give this thing to him ad hurt him and felt he could do better. I finally told a guy last year partly because he was persistent to know why i wouldnt sleep with him for months though i cared about him. It was such a relief he basically looked at me an was like its no a big deal, and its not like its a death sentence. Unfortunately , were not together cuz he’s a cheater but it help me to realize that it not hat big a deal. Every guy i have told so far has accept me and i know thats noot common i guess im just lucky. But you are still the same perso u were before u had this. You determine ur future dont let this disease do it fo u

This notion that the gov’t is holding out on a cure is rediculous and for the uneducated. Do you know how much money pharmaceutical companies would make with a cure or vaccine?

Herpes and HIV are viruses like the common cold. Last I checked, you can’t get rid of a virus. Your body has to build up immunity to it. However, these viruses are so sophisticated that they trick your body to attack itself. So medications can only suppress them. That’s why companies are working on vaccines to try to eradicate these diseases by preventing them from entering the body.

Education is the key. Not subscribing to all these crazy theories that you hear your friends talk about.

dont let these idiots here get to you.. although it was unwise to have unprotected sex (no matter who it was with) its not the end of the world.. i got herpes from my grandmothers hands (you can spread it to your fingernails if you bite them a lot) and she still feels so horrible about it but im alive. i got a few really bad out brakes on my lip where she touched me and now with a combination of things she showed me, i haven’t had one in 3 years.. i truely hope you get lucky it may very well just be a UTI but if its not, dont hate yourself for it.. learn from it

  75. Paul October 7, 2010 at 12:44 pm #

To all who are newly infected by either of the Herpes strains, please take the time to get educated and take comfort in the fact that having Herpes is not a death sentence.
It is very important to protect your sex partners. It is also very important to learn how to limit the number and severity of outbreaks.
For those who criticize people infected with Herpes:
Having herpes is NOT a big deal. You get a painful rash that lasts a few days in your genital area 1-4 times a year (though for most it is once a year or less). The number of annual breakouts decrease with time. That is it. No body parts falling off, no crippling episodes or loss of pleasure when not in an outbreak.
And because it is most often spread by an unknowing carrier, contracting the virus is ABSOLUTELY no indication of promiscuity. It can just as easily be spread from one unknowing partner to another. People who have had sex with only a few partners their whole life can contract the disease from a loving partner, while sluts and gigoloes who have had sex with 100 partners can get lucky and not contract the virus. (Then they go on websites like this and criticize those who have practiced safe sex in monogamous relationships and still contracted the virus.)
Herpes will only “ruin your life” if you let it. Get educated, be more careful, treat the outbreaks aggressively, and move on with your life. A LOT more people you know have herpes than you realize. 1 out of 5 of YOU KNOW have herpes. Think about it.

Think of how you would feel if your boyfriend knew he was possibly infected with a virus, didn’t tell u and slept with u. How would u feel? I say get yourself checked first by the doctor, if everything is fine, then u’ll only have to tell him if u don’t wanna keep secrets from him. On the other hand, if u are positive for something, u need to tell him and he can decide whether or not he still wants to be with u. Otherwise, u’d be putting his health at risk. And when he finds out later, he’ll leave.

You are a woman that can still experience a fulfilled life…but guess where you have to go to do that? …Forgiveness….NOT FOR HIM but for you. It will free you. That October, you made a choice..and suffered consequences….but you know what? We all do that…now stop waisting you energy on hating this insignificant person. i hope you’re getting child support, which contact with him is not necessary as there are people who can do that for you, there’s help for low income..God knows why he made these laws..and in all this pain, pain doesn’t just have to hurt.
-Pain in inevitable in our lives, some times its physical other times its emotional, it results from living in a broken can be caused by persecution, gossip, being betrayed, dumb things we do TO OURSELVES..
however you look at it, pain will always be a part of our lives, but it can do more than just hurt. It every painful situation we face, God gives us an opportunity to trust that he will not only get us through it but help us nurture a deeper trust in him through it.

Do something, make the decision to live again.

  91. Yazmin August 26, 2010 at 9:40 am #

i don’t know how old you are..but you’re causing these fears to yourself, you are doing this to yourself. Its all about the choices we make, perhaps you need to step back and figure out what you really want in life…because cheating and lying will only destroy you…I’m sorry for the harsh truth but you have to be strong and with this adult decisions take the adult responsibilities…and hopefully you just have a UTI…but we live, and learn. we must be self-controlled, it is your only body, it is your only life.

wow, as my name says.. I just found out today.. that I am infected with the HSV type 2. Boy was I upset… I don’t even want to see my boyfriend right now (I got it from him) but after reading your post how could i be so sad when you’ve got it and are perfectly non-chalant about it. He hasn’t had any symptoms of the herpes virus.. according to him of course. (lucky him) But I don’t think I will be so lucky. I think so far I’ve had two different out breaks and the first outbreak was misdiagnosed as a yeast infection. Which I’ve read is common. This is going to be rough for me to over come though. I’m only 19 years old and I didn’t sleep around like a lot of chicks my age did and still do. It was of course devastating to hear.. I had tried to convince myself that I didn’t have herpes.. I was just having a bad yeast infection. But after reading your post.. I think I might be able to get over this fact a little quicker than I thought.
    Thanks :)

i’ve had it for almost two years now and it was really hard at first to except and be not ok with it but content, and it changed the way i looked at dating and looking for that special someone, but you cant hold yourself back and hate life forever. if you tell someone you have it and they are ok with it take things slow and if they stick around that just shows they really care for you and love you and arent there for just a piece. it gets better over time i promise. when you tell them dont make it seems so big and scary just tell them causally it makes it easier to say and they dont get all scared

The most heart breaking thing about the almost all the comments on this site is that they are linked to lies and deception disguised as love. Mine is another story which would only echo all the others. I am on the brink of telling someone for the first time in 5 years what my ex did to me and is doing to many other women. For the first time in 5 years, I want to be emotionally and physically intimate with someone. Someone summed up the problem above. The fear of hurting someone that you love. It isn’t life threatening but it does effect your quality of life. I’m taking the risk of telling him very early on, to protect myself. I’d got my head round being single, just, but can’t allow myself to become close to someone and then not be able to be close physically. Wish me luckxxx

Every one asks the same question, why? Why isn’t there a cure for herpes, HIV, cancer, etc. The most reasonable is because money can buy anything or anyone. The government doesn’t care if u get better or if you live, all he cares about is money! Medications this days are very advanced there is just no way they haven’t found it because they have…. As long as he keeps that cure hidden he is going to keep receiving money from the pharmaceuticals. It just not fair that we, the affected ones have to pay for this kind of bullshit. If they don’t do nothing for us, we have to. !!!!!!!!!!

I was so taken bac by the news but more taken bac by the way the doctor treated me as nothing but a statistic… I became very sad as all of us do when we first get the news…. But honestly my family has done nothing but stay positive and stood by my side…. I was most worried about finding some to accept me for what I have and if I do being able to have children…. I have found someone who accepts what I have but understands it is not what makes me….. I am more driven than ever to do all the things in life I want…. For those of u who feel like it is the end of the world find a support team and do your research and you will realize that it is just a small bump in the rode on a journey call life…. I am sure in soon years we wil be cured of things small issue….

  113. a June 3, 2010 at 8:38 pm #

Alright, everyone. It seems the stigma of herpes has struck most of you here, being all afraid of the world now. I just got it in Jan ’10 from the girl I was dating. I was even wearing a condom to prevent pregnancy (which comparatively would have actually ended my life as a real problem). —Just a heads up to guys sleeping with a positive girl: wait a few -extra- days after her period to have sex, because any latent blood from her period still passing out will be extremely potent, which is how I got it; down by the base of the condom.–Had a weird break out, the doc thought it was some rash but my test came back positive. I wasn’t really pleased, but he told me straight up not to really worry about. It’s super, super common and let’s think about it. Have you guys ever had the flu? Sure you have. Unless my herpes is made out of cupcakes and unicorns, the Flu is 50 times worse than a simple herpes outbreak. You get them maybe twice a year, it itches, it goes and hides again.

I didn’t try and fight my girlfriend, we didn’t break up because of it. We discussed the “obligatory” staying together for fear of rejection, but the relationship itself had ended. I was sad for a bit, told some close friends, and as it turns out some of them secretly had it also. One of them willingly contracted it because he 1. loved the girl he was seeing and 2. Knows that this so-called disease is about as life-altering as a stubbed toe.

Honestly, plenty of people have it, there are ways to suppress it for now, maybe cure/vaccine against it later. I know some of you are fairly young and in school still. My advice is to keep quiet about it because young adults will be the worst about teasing. Just remember that your life will continue just as regularly as it ever has. People will still have sex with you after you tell them, because education is taking over on HSV, and people know that its pretty much blown out of proportion.

Acyclovir treats it just fine, and with most medical plans it costs like, 9 to 12 bucks a month at a Target pharmacy. Calm down.

I like to jokingly refer to herpes as a “head cold for my penis”. I don’t even think I’m being overly nonchalant. Don’t let it control your life, you’ll find someone, and they won’t give a damn about the virus. Best wishes.

i got the herpes virus from my then fiance . . . she when told of this said she didn’t have symptoms. I know that she gave me it as i had been faithful the whole time we were together and did not have sex for two years after. It really hurt that she didn’t have it too and that my life was now ruined whereas she was getting married, happy as can be . . . This has been me now for ten years; i’m 27 and single. every time i meet someone nice it all ends badly as i try to explain to them the ins and outs of how we’d have to be careful, get tested etc . . . it’s a fucking pain in the ass. I could have a wonderful life if only i could meet someone who understands. so depressed please to all those research pharm guys out there hurry up with the cure. or could we at least start opening std singles bars ?

You’re honestly trying to tell us that 70 million of the 300 million people in the US are afflicted with STDs?

Just found out I’ve got HSV-2. Easily worst day of my life. Totally devastated, furious as hell with my girlfriend, angry at the world. Why me you know? Its the only thing I think about when I’m awake. Wish I could sleep until there’s a cure. Too embarrassed to tell anybody. Researching everything. Don’t think I’ll ever be as happy as I would have been otherwise. Basically depressed, lonely, and angry. When will this go away? How long will I resent my girlfriend? Should I believe that she didn’t know? Did she cheat on me? Who else has this? I really can’t believe this is happening. I would do anything to go back and time. I would do anything to cure this

    Guy and Gals,
As I read and read all these responses they make me angry. I tested positive for HSV2 after ending a relationship that lasted 3 years. My girlfriend in the relationship had had sex twice in her life(25 years old) before meeting me. Talk about luck. Neither of us have ever had any symptoms. Fortunately, I have an incredible physician. After testing positive(which even she stated was borderline), she sat me down and told me “herpes” is a dirty word because of how society looks at the term and not at the disease. She even told me some practices don’t inform their patients if they test positive due to the emotional impact it can have on ones life, they would simply rather treat symptoms when they occue. TO EVERYONE: Herpes of both types is a very common disease. A disease that is nothing more than cold sores. HSV1 virus lives and resides in the mouth tissue. HSV2 lives and resides in the ganglion at the base of the spine, which just happends to be close enough to where it counts. I know some of us have symptoms and monthly episodes that can be bad, what I’m telling you is that don’t let it ruin your life. The emotional stigma of these “cold sores” causes much more pain than the physical side. Herpes is a bad word because of society and std classes in elementary school. They are cold sores that come and go in two places on the body. The best thing you can do is treat them, have safe sex, and be responsible about it. Don’t let it ruin your life, it’s not worth it. There are 50 million people in this country (that we know of) that have it. It’s common. Check out or other dating sites that allow you to be open about your status. We’re human, humans always find a way.
Be happy and live, don’t hide. Treat it and be honest. Good luck and please don’t beat yourself up, how can you protect yourself against something you can’t see? My ex-girlfriend was a virgin when she graduated college, had protected sex twice with two people and got it. I love her and I know shes a good person, it’s a commonplace disease and sooner or later it will be cured. For now, treat it and be safe.

I have herpes but haven’t had an outbreak for a while sooner or later this will happen I thought it was the end of my life too I got it off a guy who I now wish id never met. . . But it really is not the end of your life. . . . I still go about my daily life exactly how I used to I’m 20 going on 21 . . . . I have a boyfriend who loves me. . . But he doesn’t know about the herpes but I am asymptomatic. . . And have been for a while now. . . I don’t feel the need to tell him because if you are careful then you won’t spread it . . . I haven’t and have been with him for a year and half. . . . You are still the same people as you were before you got the virus. You should never let this get you down there are more people with herpes than you think. . . In america alone there are over 55 million people with the virus and with it spreading well there’s just going to be more and more so you are not alone. . . Go out and live your life the way you want to!!! :-)

Im a 19 year old girl too…my boyfriend of three year cheated on me, gave me herpes n left me..its been two years and i havent heard a word from him since…and he is still with the other girl. he told me he would never leave me….I was/maybe am a beautiful blone blue blued princess who was athletic, happy, friends with evertone etc…you know the story…
the doctor had no remorse. she looked at me and said “looks like herpes”, told the nurse to take my blood and left the room. i wanted to shoot that lady…i also wanted to find a gun in the cabinet to shoot myself. as bad as that sounds. i cryed…even tho i know i had to rewalk through the lobby….couldnt drive…couldnt think…i was fuckkked up. There was probily like 50 small white-ish looking puss pimple looking cankersores. that is exactly what it looked like. Canker sores….they hurt really bad too. like i would litterally put ice on it til it was numb. i got every flu like symptom they said i would after about 3 or 4 days after i slept with my cheating bf. it was crazy cuz all i woulda had to do was take back one fuckin day…i think about it all the time way…couldnt work, play the last summer softball turnament, nothing…my dad was asking my mom y i was sick n shit…she never told him because she swore she wouldn,t…i told my mom because shes my mom n will always love me. im glad i did…i talk to her about it alot and it feels good to talk about it.
i thought my life was over….the last two weeks i thought about suiside everyday and did not see any purpose of life…sometimes i still dont know but i feel alot better with myself. i was put on anti-depressents n went to counciling alot…i will never know if it helped b/c idk what u r supost to be like on them but i still hated life.
i thought i would never date again..and i hated boys n became very concsious of the word “herpes”…it gets said alot actually..and always kills me..but i usually laugh alot or something…i wish everyone with herpes had a sign for only me to see so i would see what other types of pple suffer..only they know what it is like and how i feel. i feel like the only one…in the world..for real.
neway…a very nice boy really tryed hanging out with me..i got to know him for a very long time…he was sweet and forreal…one night i got the guts 2 tell him. i asked him if he knew what “abreva” was for…he said yea…then i said i have that problem..but down there…i told him i just am trying 2 b honest n 4real wit you because i really like you and want to be in an honest, trustworthy relationship….he told me he loved me no matter what..and even after i broke up with him, he loves n and loves being around me….I talk about it 2 him all the time but he says he honestly doesnt think about it…it is releiving…but i never thought ne1 would EVER be like that…
my other boy- bestfriend said if i would date him, he would except him (only those 2 boys know..confide in pple that you KNOW love u no matter what..and they will not look at u differenly)
overall now i havent really gotten ne outbreaks except for a few red deep pimple looking cytes on my booty cheeks…i hate them but i rarely take meds..even though i have veltrex just incase “down there” feels funny
i hate the fact I am Diseased….but i know it is me now..and i am a changed person..its my 2nd year of college…i dont go out n party n i dont make new friends…i hate the boys here..they r tools n only lookin for sex…i find sex to be just handed out like candy discuses me..and i always worry about others getting STDs..actually..i wonder how all of the OTHER pple that have so much sex DONT get stds…or maybe they do…i have no idea…makes me wonder…it also makes me look like an angel here because i dont sleep around.. pple call me the good girl..but i feel more like the consealed girl…the girl who can never really tell pple who she is…I would love 2 tell someone about me n say ..yeah im a changed person..i became more responcible and had to grow up..i had to love myself..but had 2 hate myself b4 that love came…i wanna say I have herpes and went through litterally hell and back with about 2 years of my life…when i was 18 and 19 years old…i dont understand how i could get herpes from someone i loved and trusted…my moral is DONT trust anyone….if u have doubts…u r right…if u think you have it..i almost garentee u do…it will change ur life..but dont let it kill u! because ultimently it is mind over matter…it takes time…but once u are comfortable with yourself the battle against ur own self gets easier.
no1 will understand y i am who i am…but ur real friends will stick by ur side. and if they do not…u will b fine alone…i usta be always around pple..but now i love being alone…no1 to judge u…and it gets better when you stop judging urself.
be strong. herpes is just a gross word…dont let it define you…let it be a learning tool to critique and redifine urself.

    Hi there-
I completely understand you and find myself in the same boat. The only difference is that I am still with the man who gave it to me even though I know I deserve more. I know I am trying to settle because of the fear of future rejection. How often do you get an outbreak? Did Mr. right ever call back? KIT-

i know it is real hard and i still havent been able to get over that phase. i am 19 as well and i feel the same way like no man is going to want to be with me. I am even scared to fall in love. i have had 2 outbreaks in the last month and it is real sad. I had a best friend that was diagnosed with herpes but she doesnt talk to me anymore for some reason and now that the doctors told me I have it it makes me sad and it makes me even sadder that now that we can relate to each other she is holding some grudge against me but fuck it. i would love some support or a friend with the same thing i have i think it would make me feel better. whats crazier is that i thought i was never going to get this disease, a disease that doctors dont give a shit about and that they dont continue to search for a cure they dont care :(

I completely Agree, I am only 19 years old, I found out the day after my 19th birthday that I had genital herpes. It completely changed who I am. I used to be the girl in the crowd that was always smiling, no matter what was going on. I used to laugh, and play, now I go to work, go to school, and hardly ever smile. I feel so degraded, and invaluable. How can you ever really have a real relationship? I read that one of you found a really great guy, and I appreciate the hope, but it really is hard to have hope for myself. I have had sex with less than 5 people…. 3 of which I dated for a very long time… How can you fall in love with someone and then tell them you have a disease like that? Why would anyone want to be with someone who could potentially ruin their life as you did yours? I have a very hard time dealing with this, maybe because it is so recent.. All I ever want to do is eat and sleep.. I think the over all trauma has made me depressed? Also, I was diagnosed with herpes by my doctor only looking at my Outbreak.. He did no cotton swab or blood test. I hear the blood test is inaccurate, how true is this? I was told it gives false positives and false negatives…?

  126. Anonymous April 5, 2010 at 9:18 pm #

please explain how you get over that phase, after i found out i had herpes i know my life is ruined. I think that i am not as attractive anymore, and feel like nobody wants me. I am not that same jolly person that i was and alot of people tell me that which makes me feel even worst. Its just in my head 24/7 and i cant help it. I just want to be the girl I was before.

I just found out I have HSV 1 around june or may 2009.
I mean i got tested, i had no clue that herpes was there since i had no break outs, now i’ve had symptoms for about a week but they’re not really severe, it’s mostly the psychological factor i guess.

I think the vaccine idea is great , i hope he at least goes through with the trials.

  128. Anonymous March 25, 2010 at 1:40 pm #

From “dealing with finding out I have herpes and dating”:

It does get better. I am on suppressive medication and haven’t had a breakout since I last posted. Also I met a sweet guy who doesn’t have a problem with it even though he doesn’t have it. It really is true that if they want a reason to break up with you or not get into a serious relationship with you they will use the herpes as an excuse, so the rejection would probably have happened anyway despite your disease. Not always, but often enough. If a guy is understanding and really like you and really is wanting something serious to last a lifetime, he will accept you with all your flaws and all your problems. They are few and far between, but that has always been so even without a disease to contend with. I know how you feel, I have been there and might go there again for all I know, but at least now I know there is hope after all.

You are the female version of me! My ex-girlfriend cheated on me and gave me the gift that keeps on giving. I’ve been on the verge of a nervous breakdown for months. The shame has totally killed me, and I haven’t been able to tell anyone due to the fear of being “outed”. I feel so alone.

Umm in february 2010 i went to the doctors because i wasnt feeling well, i got a full check-up and everything, about a week later they had called me and told me that i had herpes on my cervix, i was sleeping with my boyfriend b 4 that without a condom and b 4 that ,me and him got checked and came back clean, so it obviously means that he cheated on me :( My stupid doctor also told me that it was nothing and that it is okay because he would give me medicine to get rid of it, after he said that i thought my life was back to normal and i had nothing to worry, and just today i thought that i wasnt feeling well again so i called health link and told them that i was in the doctors about 2 mnths ago for herpes on my cervix and than she broke the news and said that It doesnt go away :(
i couldn’t stop crying and crying…i finally stopped now and decided to read everything on here, i used to look at these and wonder why ppl just wouldn’t wear protection, and now im here typing out a comment because i am diagnosed, i don’t want people to look at me like a gross girl who cant do anything right, and im very hurt that this has happened to me i feel like theres nothing for me to live for or be happy, its like i want to do drugs and stay high so it wont bug me as much. I hope that one day soon there really is a cure that will help us..and i hope and pray that i will get help. can someone please just say something that will help me feel alittle better.

Thank you.I really needed to “hear” those words of encouragement. The virus was a present to me about a year and a half ago by someone whom I dated for 4 years. He kept it a secret from me and it is something that is still hard to accept. I try to stay positive though and hope someday soon there is a breakthrough in the scientific world that will help tremendously. I was one of those people who didn’t find it accepting until having experienced it. Never judge. Take care & God Bless.

  132. Anonymous March 3, 2010 at 5:29 pm #

    Dear fighter:

It must have been luck for me to give you these words of encouragement.

You are not alone who has experienced the shame, the pain, the fear and torment of the Herpes virus family. For those unlucky ones, who doesn’t even have a fighting chance, died as young as infants. For us survivors, the road is tough and long. This scenario reminds me of the the movie 300. Our strong will is what’s keeping our dignity and mentally intact. While the world constantly sends its forces against our will power. Spears and arrows of loneliness, temptation, sadness, fear and forever changing events shot toward us. For people like us who have a conscience, knowingly avoiding contact to protect the ones we love, is so much more honorable than those devils what spread it a muck in the first place.

If love is what you seek, it is not easily attained and treasured. Unless its someone who know the pain, the other half may not find it accepting until they have experienced it. If love is not attainable, there’s more in life that we can achieve. Success in carreer, in moral, in art, in everyday of your life, is more valuable for you at this moment in life than any other. There may be a cure that will come along a few days from now, a month and just another year. If you surrender now, you will never be able to taste the sweet taste of freedom. Freedom from the curse that have troubled you for so long.

Stay strong my dear, for I am one of many that is fighting along your side under the same blue sky. Until our curse is lifted by the will of God and human ingenuity, we must live our lives to the fullest. I wish you a good journey on your path to true happiness.

I found out that i had genital herpes when i was 18. I caught it from my fiance of 2 years. He had been cheating on me… getting herpes was how i found out. Every since then my life has been unfair. I’m to ashamed to tell any of my friends or family. I’ve sabotaged every relationship since then, ending it before it gets to serious, or after we have slept together and i freak out. All i want is to find someone to adore me, and to love me for everything i am. To have a family. Now i wonder if any of that is going to be possible. To have kids i will have to get a c section to avoid exposure. And more difficult, to find a man who’ll be willing to be with me knowing i have this ticking time bomb in my pants.
I really wish these experts were looking more for a cure than a vaccine. Yes the prevention would make life a bit easier for us, not always having to be so nervous about spreading it. But in the long run, there has to be something better.

Hello, This is the first time I have commented on a forum for disease. I contracted genital herpes recently from my boyfriend whom I had been seeing for several months. I was devastated when the doctor told me what it was. All my life people I had known of people who had anything like that were treated and talked about like lepers, dirty and disgusting. To make it worse my boyfriend insisted that since his wife of 16 years never got it he didn’t believe he could have given it to me. He had a couple of sores on his buttocks he said his doctor had advised him were “shingles” and wore band aids to cover them. One night he didn’t because he considered them healed up and from sleeping against him skin to skin on the same uncovered spot, I got what I thought was a small bole on the spot that was against him while sleeping. Then came what I thought was a yeast infection and an irritated area I showed to my doctor. I have never had anything like the bole or the other spot before.

The doctor told me that there was no doubt that my boyfriend had given it to me and he should just accept it and get over it (he was depressed about “the possibility” and in need of “his space”). Needless to say he eventually dumped me anyway. This was all hard enough to deal with in normal circumstances without having to also deal with the knowledge that I know had something that ensured future rejection. I had lived my life alone before and knew I could do it again if I had too, but I didn’t really want it to be because I had no choice or to eliminate any possibility of finding true love.

The very next guy I dated was pushing and pushing for sex and I didn’t want to get that close to someone again unless I was sure they cared about me the person. I had made a decision to set some boundaries and insisting that they and myself be respected or else go back to celibacy as I had done in the past. The guy assured me he was really interested in me liked me very much and wanted to know why I was holding back. I was so scared but I had to tell the truth and couldn’t lie so I bit the bullet and confessed about the herpes. He was so wonderful about it because he had dated a girl for 11 months who had it and was just careful and didn’t have sex when she was infected. He said it as a mere inconvenience and no threat if you were careful. After they had broke up he had himself tested specifically and he was clean of the disease. I was so grateful that he didn’t reject me and make me feel like a scank that the euphoria of getting past that first dreaded talk and not being rejected after all lead me to going ahead and having sex with him before I was ready. The very next day Mr. Sweet and Into me started exhibiting all the classic characteristics of a guy who got what he wanted and was ready to move on. This is a long story, but I am writing it for other women out there who are just finding out about getting this disease and are trying to deal with the emotional affects upon their self esteem.

I just started dating a new fellow whom I really, really like in every single way. I could so fall in love with this man and spend the rest of my life finally with a decent man who lives a decent life and not a commit-aphobic. But guess what? The attraction is so strong between us he is getting into the physically side of things faster than I am ready for emotionally. I had to keep backing off to cool things down and keep my self-respect over and over. I finally just went ahead and told him about the herpes. He was understanding at first and I was so relieved but wise to my own reactions to those emotions because of my previous experience. So although things got heated again, I backed off again and he respected that and cooled down. I need to know that I am worth getting to know.

The problem is that now I am sitting here at home the next day alone waiting for “the call” that will or will not come saying he has had time to think about it and just doesn’t want to take the risk. His reactions to me at the end of our date and since then have been decidedly cooler than before we had “the talk”. I understand it is a lot to deal on behalf of someone he hasn’t known that long. I didn’t want to tell him til he got to know me as a person enough to be able know if I was worth the risk. I didn’t want to have sex anyway til I knew it was me as a person he cared for and not just sex. I hadn’t thought that someone who was as devote as he is would be pushing for sex that soon anyway so I was taken aback and was confused about what to do.

Now because I felt pressured and am still in the beginnings of learning how to deal with this stigmatic disease, I am kicking myself for revealing too much too soon. I never would have had sex with him or considered it without first telling him the truth and giving him the choice I wasn’t afforded. I am getting really depressed now knowing I blew it and just assured the rejection I feared would come anyway.I have never been given a chance for love by this caliber of man before. And although I have now known him very long, I mourn the lose of a rare opportunity.

I have struggled so hard to get to the point in my life where I could be positive and live each day one day at a time and now I feel like my future is already decided for me that all the positivity and mental effort towards not worrying about the future in the world just isn’t enough to keep free of this mind numbing depression. I don’t want to burden my friends and family (the few that know) with my problems with the deeps of my dark thoughts so instead I am here talking to others who may understand exactly how I feel.

  136. Anonymous February 15, 2010 at 9:12 am #

i’m 17, and was diagnosed on March 1, 2009 when i was 16 and it is now February 15 2010. I had been with one a person for around 2 months with no sex. After deciding to be with this person, my friends strongly disagreed and left my side. I had no friends and only this person i barely knew from only being with them for a short period of time. I confided in him and asked him if he had anything. Of course his automatic reaction was no. Thinking back to that day, if he had said yes i have no idea how i would have felt about it. But anyways, i believed him. We had sex all the time considering we were exclusive and i had no one else but him and had become very close to him. After awhile the relationship became toxic and he became very controlling knowing that i was weak because he was the only person i had since i had no friends. He controlled my life, and the only reason i stayed with him was because i was afraid to be alone. School was hard enough to go through with everyone hating youu, not to mention if i was even more alone by not having his support. so this went on for about 8 months until around the summer time when i finally made some new friends and built up the courage to shut him down and not let him treat me that way anymore. After breaking up with him i finally felt happy. That summer, summer of 2008, i met the guy i would later fall in love with. We hung out just as friends at first, but then he became my best friend and it didnt hurt that we both were sexually attracted to each other. We hooked up after a month or so. And i can honestly say i had never been more happier in my life. We had our ups and downs for around a year when after having sex one day i felt very weak and tired. This went on for around a week until i told my mom about it and she took me to the doctor. This was the most horrific and degrading experience of my life. I complained to the dpctor that i had some red sore on my privates. I allowed her to examine me but i told her that i was very very very sore and to please be gently. She proceeded to pull me apart and poke me with different objects i think were swabs. I groaned and began to cry because i was in so much pain. She acted like i was a slut when in all realism i had been completely monogumous with the guy i had fallen in love with. She left the room and i began to cry to my mom. IT was embaressing and hurtful that she didnt respect me and consider my feelings but instead did it with little care and really hurt me physically. She came back about 15 min later and asked my mom to leave the room, where she proceeded to tell me that i did in fact have herpes. I began to cry obviously and didnt want to be alone with this women who was looking at me like i was dirty and deserved what i got. I asked her to bring my mom in and i told her what i had. After a while the doctor left and me and my mom sat in the room holding each other as we cried and realized my life would never be the same and would be much harder from here on out. Still the scariest part was going home and having to tell my dad, who had no idea i had ever had sex since me and my mom both wanted to wait to tell him. He didnt talk to me for around 3 days wich was hard considering i already felt so alone. but next came the even harder part, keeping it from the person i loved. Now i know this sounds so wrong in every way. But i was 16 and he was 20. I wanted to tell him so bad because i knew he deserved to know but the fact is in highschool, people can ruin your life and they arent mature enough to deal with things like this that happen to people who you wouldnt even suspect. So i always had protected sex with him and this went on for another year, and we had been whatever we were for going on two years. When he met someone else, a girl who was his age and more for him. she was gorgeous and everything i guess i couldnt be for him, i had never felt so lifeless in my life. It was the worst thing in my life having to have the person you love tell you they wanted to be with someone else that they loved. I think about him constantly and yesterday was veltines day and that was the hardest. Being through so much in such a short amount of life has sobered me to so many situations. I want people to learn from me. I hear so many of my friends worry about being pregnant because they did not use a condom, i want to be able to say why would you let one small amount of time change your life! catching something that lasts a lifetime is not worth a couple minutes of pleasure. believe me i know this. I want them to never have to suffer from something that i do. I find the future to be bleak for me. Being as i have matured a lot over the last couple of years going through all that i have, i think about marriage and dating and having children. Which all seem so impossible. I’m trying to deal with this day by day, some days are better then others, and some days i just want to curl up in a ball in my bed and cry and cry. Im becoming a lot more used to it and have only had 2 outbreaks in the last year. I am very hopeful for someday having a cure, even though i am not sure there will be one soon. This efffects one out of every four women and that is mind boggling. I want someone to help all of us, this shouldnt be called genital herpes but rather the good person disease. 17 and awaiting something to help her.

My daughter has had tiny cracks inside her lower lips a few times since she was a small baby, but I put it down to sun, food etc as she also has skin problems and allergies. She hasn’t had it for over a year and a half, but got it again earlier this month and it looked like tiny little blisters. My son got the same a few days later (as it is impossible to keep them separated). Then my daughter caught a particularly bad cold, and got what looked like a pimple under her nose. She kept on rubbing her nose with her little wrists, and a few days later she had tiny blisters on her arms. She also has one on her leg and one on her thigh. They are really tiny. I’ve had two doctors look at her, both which said that it is not herpes and even if it was it would be the type 1 strain. Now, me and my husband are bot type 2 positive, not type 1. We never let anyone kiss her (because we were scared she would contract HSV). We never had a babysitter for her until she was at least two years old. I never left her with anyone, not even her dad, for 11 months (while I was breastfeeding) so nothing could have happened to her that shouldn’t have happened. We wash all our underwear etc separate from the kids stuff, wash hands etc. I am asymptomatic, my husband has a few outbreaks per year. I never thought it could transmit via kissing, not the type 2 virus. The scary thing is that all doctors say that is a sexually transmitted disease, and should she test positive we would have to be reported. Imagine that, not only have you passed it onto your child, you will be accused of sexually molesting them. I understand that they have to, as there are children out there that are being abused, but my children are more important to me than the ground I walk on. Me and their dad would never let anything happen to them. We ahven’t had them tested, out of fear that it would come back positive. There is still a remote chance that my husband has a HSV 1 infection as well, so I’ve sent him for a blood test. If that comes back positive, I can hopefully convince myself that it is a HSV 1 rather than a 2 that they’ve contracted. But I’m terrified. What do you tell your children? When do you tell them? How? Will they hate you forever?

I have the virus that was sexually contracted. However this is not just a STD as i have passed it to my children through kissing them on the lips like mums do, not knowing i had the virus. I cant tell anyone, this is causing me severe anxiety and i dont know what way to turn. My children and I were all healthy until their father brought it back to our home. This virus has severe consiquences that makes me feel like leaving this world. Someone needs to listen.

  141. Anonymous February 1, 2010 at 12:19 am #

First off, I just want to say that the people who claim that all we need to do is “pray”: you are idiots. If Jesus is the only one that can save us, then I’m in a lot more trouble than I thought. Us that are infected need to scream publicly at the top of our lungs that this epidemic needs to be addressed. After all, we live in a Democracy. Even that’s even not good enough. All of us that are affected, either indirectly or directly, need to collectively donate to credible organizations that can help (either by coming up with a cure or, at least, a vaccine). Perhaps modern medicine will not come up with at cure, if there is a vaccine, at least I will know that my partner is protected.

I contracted after recently breaking up (or so I thought) with my fiancé. The story is not important, other than the fact that I was on the rebound and I had a conversation before I engaged in sexual activity with the girl I contracted this from. I do not think that this was my fault, in the sense that this girl assured me she had no STDs (even told me that she knew she couldn’t get pregnant if we had sex without protection). The point is that there are bad people in the world, and you can’t really protect against that. If a person decides it is within them to potentially ruin someone else’s life for whatever their short term or immediate objective is, there’s really nothing anyone who trusts them can do about it. I don’t want to go on and on about my experience, but I had sex with this girl one time (after specifically asking her about her history and if she had anything I should worry about). Also, I had just “broken up” (I will be the first one to admit that I don’t understand women and how they communicate) with my fiancé within a few weeks of this experience. It seems like everyone is entitled to a justified rebound without serious consequences—except me.

I haven’t been able to bring myself to date in a while (several months). I have met some women that have seemed interested; however, I have been unable to call them back because of my condition.

Recently, last week, I met another girl who I know is very interested. To make a long story sort, I did call her back (although I was under the influence at the time). We’ve been talking, and she has even brought up the fact that she looks forward to being physical. In the olden days, we would have already been together; but I’ve just told her at this point that I want to make her feel good, but there are things we need to talk about. Unfortunately, I fear that this message has unintentionally caused her to feel closer to me. Every time I think about having sex I have a mini panic attack. Just to make things clear, there is no way that I will have sex with this girl without telling her about my condition. Be that as it may, I think I’m more concerned if that when I tell her she will be okay with it. I’ve learned that even condoms aren’t enough protection. I like this girl, but I don’t really know her. This situation is so fuct up because (I am talking only about myself) I can’t love someone without potentially hurting them. Not only that, what if I do infect this person–is it my obligation to be with this person as long as they want me to because I changed their life forever (even if I’m not feeling it)?

I’m living a nightmare that I can’t wake up from. We all need to pull together to find a vaccine/cure.

F.Y.I. Mario’s words of advice were posted in the string below — see July 19th — and the message was titled Hello…..

Good luck and keep the faith for healthy life and an ultimate cure.

  143. Anonymous January 30, 2010 at 11:42 pm #

Every word from Mario is true and genuinely good advice. What you lose as freedom you gain as wisdom.

For overall well-being, stay emotionally strong, get your rest, guard against colds and fatigue, be honest with yourself and with others, don’t be taken over by stress and remember you’re not alone with this problem.

RE: Homeopathic help & a tip that has worked for me: Pure Tea Tree Oil. Keep a small bottle handy and apply it with a cotton swab to the outbreak area when you feel it coming on or upon the time of visible outbreak for relief and faster disappearance. Very effectve.

RE: RX — You should also ask your doctor for a prescription (refillable) for a tube of Zovirax (Acyclovir) ointment. If you have infrequent or minor outbreaks it may just be adequate enough to use this only when you have the outbreaks, and forego ongoing doses of it in pill form when you don’t have outbreaks — especially if you find you have sex infrequently, use condoms, and tend to refrain from oral sex.

Less fun, but you’re not on a pill every day wondering if you’re keeping it away. Do try to practice safe sex, and re-think how you deal with oral sex in your relationships, you can work it out and still enjoy a degree of intimacy.

honey there are many ppl who suffer from this hideous disease & we would all love to imagine that we don’t have it. I mean I know exactly what you mean, I don’t put it in my head that I don’t have it but I do try not to spend most of my time thinkn bout it all day. but all the while I spend a lot of time on the net searching and findn facts about a future cure for this disease. I believe in my heart that one will be found sooner then we think, if they already haven’t found one. it’s all bout the $ honey…& it’s so unfair to the many ppl who suffer from this. all we want is our lives back, is that to much to ask for? & the fact that they are coming out with a vaccine that only helps women from being infected & not men is so unfair as well! can’t men get this disease? aren’t there men out there now suffering from this disease? YES! so is it to much to ask for when I say we need a herpes vaccine that will protect both men & women?! what is the world comin to? the things that go on in this world today are so horrible, it’s a shame! & why offer blood tests that are meant to find this disease in ppl but many ppl have false negative & the only way you will know is when you find out from an outbreak. many ppl carry this disease & have no clue that they have it. its so sad cause while doctors or ppl say its not life threatening I however say that it is, anytime you can contract HIV from these lesions that come along wit the HSV virus. so I say the pharmaceutical industry need 2 get off this high horse that they’re all on & release this cure, cause I kno damn well one has been found by now. someone needs 2 find it in their heart to find a cure for this horrible disease that has taken control over many ppl’s lives! plz…if yal can find a vaccine for the swine flu as quick as yal did den what is taking so long to find a vaccine or better yet a cure for herpes? this will only get worse & more & more ppl will continue gettn affected. so stp this disease in its tracks with a cure!!!! WE DON’T WANT OR NEED ANYMOR TREATMENTS OR SUPPRESORS FOR THIS DISEASE, WE WOULD LIKE A CURE & SOON! NOT IN ANOTHER 5YRS CUZ I KNOW IT DOESN’T TAKE THAT LONG, BEING THAT YAL HAVE BEEN RESEARCHING FOR A CURE ALL THESE YRS I THINK YAL SHOULD BE DAMN CLOSE TO FINDIN ONE BY NOW! to everyone who suffer from this jus keep god in your prayers & keep your spirits high! keep prayin as well…our day will come when a cure is found! don’t give up jus yet…I kno one is comin!

Id just like to say thankyou to all of your replies. I have not returned to the webpage for a few weeks and really did not expect any replies what so ever, so they mean so so much.

I am still finding it very hard to cope with and still have not spoken to the boy who has potentially ruined my life. I know sex is not everything but at my age I just feel as if i have had so much taken away from me, or I guess I could say so much freedom taken away from me.

At times I just find it easier to even try to trick myself into believing I am not infected, which I understand can sound ridiculous but at this point in time I find it the easiest way.

When I was diagnosed I already had an idea it would be Herpes and had an idea it was not curable but was not certain, I mentioned this to the doctor and he assured me it was.

I find myself very confused and therefore I have asked my mum to take me to the doctors and get tested for anything else and to get so many questions answered, for now Im just hoping this will help me dealing with this horrible thing.

Again thankyou all so so much, xxxxx

  146. Anonymous January 7, 2010 at 7:30 am #

I’ve read your comment and understood that you’ve a good relationship. I want to know how you manage your relationship. Whenever there is intimate moment when you have lesion would you refuse her and wait until it’s fully healed? Put a condom on and prey that it doesn’t transmit?

I also want to understand about re-occurrence. Is it normal for it to come back almost once a month.

  147. Anonymous January 5, 2010 at 11:35 am #

my issue with this matter is the fact that doctors say its not life threatening which is why they are taking so long to find a cure & making new treatments instead of a cure. to me its really life threatening being that you can contrat HIV from the lesions that come along wit the herpes virus. this issue is more serious then doctors make it out to be. & HIV kills, so why can’t someone find it in their heart to change ppls lives? it would make a great impact on the wrld. this is the breakthrough we need & I know its out there so why is it taking YRS 2 reach us? its not fair to the ones that are suffering from this hideous disease. it causes emotional stress & stress kills as well. I think something needs to be done about this issue & A CURE NOT A TREATMENT NEEDS TO BE FOUND! everyday a new treatment is found, we have enough treatments, we need a cure now! plz somebody find a cure so that you can change lives & make a difference in this wrld! my other issue is that this particular disease hides out n the nerves, well if a cure is found would it cause some type of nerve damage?

I can understand what you are going through at this point of time. I have also been infected with the same some two years back. Its our mistake to put our trust in wrong places. What has happened is happened we cannot go back and change that. Rather thinking about your infection focus on the beautifull part of your life. what are the things you can do and enjoy in this single life which we have. You are not alone. You’ll meet a person who can love you with the way you are as it happened in my case. I meet a girl who made me fall in love forgetting everythig about this infection. She knows about my case and she still wants me to be with her. You’ll also find the love of your life just wait dont try to search for it. Everything happens for a reason and you’ll also have yours soon. Trust in god dont give up. The cure can come anytime. Dont spend too much of time in thiking rather spend it on thinking about your future. Have a goal and work towards it. This ‘ll divert you mostly. Again dont commit the same mistake putting trust in wrong places. True love, friendship everything are not made that happens. Just relax and let those things happen. A person who cannot be with you in your worst times has no rights to be with you when you are shinning. May be this could have happened to us just to show that these are the people who can love us with whatever we are and these are people who are using us. Dont give up. Keep smiling there is plenty of smiles left in our life. Keep smiling. Take care

I myself am a believer of all things being possible thru prayer, trust me your not in this alone. god does things to us that we will understand eventually & he carries us thru obstacles that we will thank him 4 in the end. no were not being punished or tested, you make mistakes 2 learn 4rm them & eventhough there is no cure for this disease as of now, it will not be like this 4eva. there will b a cure one day & my faith is in Dr. Bryan Cullen. google him & you will find info on him & his workings. don’t give up hope or faith just yet, god will make things better for you, just pray! & in the meantime I will keep you all in my prayers. if anyone needs someone to talk to u can reach me @ “” I hope I have helped some of you & hopefully you believe that there still is hope, just dnt give up yet. take care & god bless.

I know how all of you guys feel, trust me i’m in the same boat & with each day it gets a bit easier & a bit harder to deal with. this is a disease that affects so many people, no its not life threatening but the after effect that it has on one’s life is serious. & the emotional stress that go along with it is also serious, I wish someone would find a cure for this disease & soon. idk if anyone has ever came across “Dr. Bryan Cullen’s” website, all you have to do is google him and you will find some info that will change your life & hopefully open you up to believe that somewhere out there a cure is on the horizon. i’m willin to listen to anyone who jus needs or wants someone to talk to that can relate what your goin thru, so my email is & plz feel free to email me & I will surely respond. I hope i’ve helped…god bless & take care.

Prayer is the key. I believe I read where you said the guy you are dating loves you. Did I read that correct? If so, Honey what are you afraid of? If the love is genuine then whats there to worry about. The devil is a lye and you believe that and begin to speak and claim you healing. In the name of Jesus!!!

  152. Anonymous January 3, 2010 at 9:52 am #

Baby I feel your pain and I know what you are going through. I was infected by someone I was intimate with for 5 years and when I mentioned my situation to him he denied ever being with anyone else besides me. To make a long story short. I just want to assure you that when you meet someone and he is right for you, he will accept you for who you are regardless of what you have. I also advise you not to say anything about your condition untill you see and know forsure the relationship you have with your next partner is just more than sex. Make sure he likes you for who you are and so on……But be encouraged everything happens for a reason, I promise you all things will work out for your good only if you believe. When I say this Im also speaking to myself. Be Blessed

I was diagnosed with Genital Herpes earlier in November 2009. I am only 17 and cannot believe this could have happened to me. I have always been aware of STI’s but never though it would happen to me, maybe this being my age and naivity.

I have only ever had one sexual partner in my life, and only had intercourse 3 times with the same boy in the same year. Twice in January and once in November. He swore to me he had no other sexual partners but clearly he did, i still havent spoken to him about this disease as he is back with his ex-girlfriend and I would rather have nothing to do with him ever again.

I am now so afraid of the future and what it may hold, how am i ever going to have sex again without spreading this awful disease? I feel i am too young to get into a serious relationship and have this type of conversation with another boy at my age. I am so worried and scared this could lead to some sort of depression.

I am so sorry that you are going through this.

It is very possible that you do carry the virus and are asymptomatic (meaning you do not have outbreaks or symptoms but can pass the virus on through viral shedding). However it does seem equally possible that you do not carry HSV2 based on your history with mono.

There is specialized testing available: The HSV2 IgG claims to be 100% accurate in determining if it’s HSV2 or 1 and the HerpeSelect is about 91%-100%. I would consult with either an infectious disease expert or qualified OB-GYN to get an answer.

You do not need to spend the rest of your life trying to protect sexual partners from a virus you may not even carry. The technology is there to provide you with a definitive answer.

    Good luck!

  159. Anonymous November 9, 2009 at 9:47 pm #

I was diagnosed with HSV-2 almost 2 years ago. It was devasting, and being since I have never had any symptoms, I was very confused. I have only slept with one person three times, using protection. I ahve performed oral sex on less than five men; however, I really do not feel that I received the disease from them. A few weeks ago, I got a call from a friend in California who said that her doctor refused to test her for HSV-2 because she has previously had mono. He went on to say that the test, oftentimes, confuse the two viruses. She called me because I had severe mono for two years when I was younger!

I am wondering if I really have HSV-2 or not….I can’t get a crystallized answer, and I have only ever had a single bump come up- that could be anything theoretically.

Can someone help me with this? Surely, if I really had the virus, I would have had an outbreak. My poor immune system has been down and out. I did not even get a single bump when I contracted Typhoid Fever in Africa….or when I had the flu….or when I was completely bombarded with stress from school work..

I was in a wonderful relationship for over a year we were talking about marriage. Then it happened. I thought I had an ingrown hair. I even showed her. I had know idea it was my first outbreak it was one red spot. A few weeks later she had a full out break. She kept accusing me of cheating. She said I was a nasty filthy diseased person. She kept having massive outbreaks . She hates me and tells everyone I’m a nasty bastard. I understand I gave them to her but I promise I had no idea I had them. Even when I thought it was an infected hair I knew I was faithful and I was sure she was. I want to thank everyone who has comminted before me. I realize I am not disgusting I realize there was a way I could have had it and not known it

One question: Why is it that when people around the world want to be cured of a serious disease or illness, they come to the US?……..hmmm, maybe because we have the best doctors and medicines???? We pay the price for having a free market economy and private healthcare system. Is our healthcare system perfect? NO, not by a long shot. However, Barack Obama is NOT the answer. History will show that Barack Obama was a complete mistake. You only see what the media wants you to see.

I am from Europe and been to the USA many times. Your health system is based on theft not on helping or curing people. What they charge you for medicine we almost get for free overhere.(Austria)

Healthcare in Europe on average works likes this:

Private: You pay around 80-120 Euro a month and you are covered for everything the doctor does to you. From X-Rays to operations. Its all included.Any accidents etc.
Employed: The healthcare plan is substracted from your income and you are totally covered.Same price more or less. Same coverage.

If you are a poor without an income you apply for the emergency funding and you get enough money to afford food and your health care plan is for free. You need however to apply for this, get registered and attend seminars where they will try to find you a suitable work but you are definitely covered and don’t pay for the doctor.

I believe in Barack Obama, he is the first president in almost American History that makes sense to me. Your former presidents were crooks and thieves on an epic level…

Has anyone heard of this company Resolve Herpes? They claim that they have a certain combination of minerals that boosts your immune system to the point that it pushes the virus out itself… ??

  167. Anonymous September 29, 2009 at 8:35 am #

I’m from the UK and when I hear what type of antivirals you use (Valtrex), I have never heard of it. You say it doesn’t work. I use Aciclovir and you take 5 tablets a day for 5 days but it goes within the first 2 days its great. I also see where you say they will never find a cure because you have to pay for Valtrex and thats where they will get money, but in the UK we don’t have to pay for any prescriptions that are to do with sexual transmitted diseases and contraception.

So don’t put it out of peoples minds that they won’t ever find a cure. Its something that I look fowards too at least.

And I also find that when itching starts I use any type of cream with Lidocaine. It numbs the area and really helps for women when they have to relieve themselves on the toilet. Off course you need to make sure with your doctor using this.

It is really hard to have this virus. We just need more information about this and just abit of hope

Obviously your not understanding the people. Obviously your oblivious ignorance show us the people of this disease, this stigmata that you don’t care. Do not get me wrong sometimes something should not be said, but if the people of this disease do not and stand up for our well being and focus on eraticting this disease. Then you could be opening up a world of upset people. That some might just use there disease as a powerful weapon, infect. Yes, I understand that you cannot die from it, but then its opens you up for HIV. Which as i understand, you can die or be very sick. I am not threatening you or anyone else. We the people of this disease, are not being selfish or thinking only for ourself. We are trying to help all and provent this disease from spreading, which could also open a window through reasch for other diseases.

I strongly feel that is to suggest we are uneducated about this issue. If you would just read these forms, there are people of young ages and older asking about information about this unfortunate compilication. That to belittle us as wrong or attempts to be heared as one voice in a commen goal. Is saying that we have no right, To talk about our discussion of the situation at hand and thoughts for a way for populations to be free of this disease or any other diseases.

I myself, no wish to stand by and let someone of your ingnorance to shut down these people.

Yes, ill be honest. I am among these people who are infected. I recently found out that I have HSV-2. just like many others I fell into depression, and almost pulled the trigger to end the suffering. I’m afraid of it, but after my doctor told me what he saw in me when he walked into my room. Has moved me in ways that I cannot… stand by particularly this non-responsive form or the pharmaceutical companies won’t help.

I believe that, we the people can by pass these pharmaceutical companies. I’m still reseaching the by-laws and complications of this situation. Though, still if we the people of this disease. Put even one dollar each into a funding to support reseach for a cure today. We could have millions or more.

All we need is to come together as one for this motion, to over come what other might block us from doing this country or the world a great deal of good.

if anyone is up for this please lets all try together.

    you can reach me at:

thank you I hope my voice is heared.

Awesome idea! Of course, they will be forced to read your daily emails and all those who you urge to flood the WH and president with mail. No way, they can’t ignore you. Please, let us know what their automated spam message says, the anticipation is killing me already.

I found out last week. Was married 18 years….been divorced for a few years….my only partner for the last 20 years was my x-husband. I never thought this could happen to me because I was married. The only reason I found out is because the dr asked me during a physical if I wanted to have the test and I said, “Sure, it’s going to come back negative.” I wish I had said no. She blew my mind. Right now, I am asking myself could I have had it all these years from a previous partner and didn’t know? Did my x step out on me and bring this home?

I’ve been seeing this guy for the last few years since my divorce and have not had had sex, because I want to wait until we married (old school). He tells me he is in love with me all the time and I think he’s going to want to get married.

This is going to break his heart and may destroy our future.

The only reason why I haven’t taken my life is because I have children that need me.

I am trying to be strong, but I am devestated. I pray they find a cure.

I am real sorry that you are only sixteen and have this trouble.

I’ve had the same trouble for 16 years! But it’s really not an issue anymore.

In almost everybody, as time goes by, this disease becomes less of a problem. You will have fewer and fewer outbreaks until they basically stop happening. Our bodies are amazing things, and you will not always have outbreaks like you do now..

For now, you can probably see a big difference by taking 2000mg. of L-Lysine every day until it stops/slows down. You should expect to see good results gradually over a period of six months or less.

You MUST keep your immune system strong to keep your disease under control. Try not to drink much alcohol, and DO NOT take any recreational drugs. Eat healthy, vitamins, sleep etc.. Google anti-viral foods like shitake mushrooms, EV coconut oil etc…

Use this time to re-examine your attitudes about sex and morality. Grow your spirit while your body heals itself. Talk to others and learn all that you can about the disease. Try to relax and accept this thing for what it really is…a nuisance. Stress makes it worse.

You are going to get past this thing…I promise. You are so young. Life is so much more than having sex ! And who knows if tomorrow is the day someone finds the cure.

    Best regards,

i went to church one day and a minister just so happen to speak about Jesus healing people….he then spoke about how the doctors said he had a life long disease…herpes! long story short…as i sat and listened he then call people up to get their healing…at first i didnt want to go and only because what the doctor told me…which was there is no cure…then i thought that HEY STUPID DIDNT YOU JUST HEAR WHAT HE SAID??? JESUS HEALED THOSE WHO ASKED TO BE HEALED. AND I ASKED TO BE HEALED ALONG TIME AGO…so of course i went up to the alter and just by taking those first steps, i was walking into my healing…if you dont believe me just as God to heal you…just as you would if you needed anything else in this world…or just wanted anything and got it…but just remember it starts with opening your mouth and then persuing it…(no one sits around and waits after ur healed to go to the doctor and get meds)

Whenever I feel that slight twinge down under I immediately pour peroxide on the spot, sit a few moments, dry the area and put neosporin for pain on the area. After I pee thru out the day I reapply the neosporin. At night I wear really loose shorts so that it has time to get air and not be constantly moist.. after about 3 days the tingles go away and a blister doesn’t appear.

  181. Anonymous August 8, 2009 at 10:22 pm #

you are assuming those two statistics are mutually exclusive. They aren’t. About 10% of people who have HSV1 also have HSV2. Not because they were irresponsible, or didn’t care, or because one “mutated into the other” (impossible), but because these things happen. They might be similar, but they are two different viruses. and we can all have more than one at a time.

Most people would be devastated to know if they’ve ever had a wart on their finger and later tested for HPV (genital warts) it would come back positive. instantly making them think they have warts down there. Get real.

To make the itch go away (and I know this sounds really odd, but it helps alittle) but Lotrimin works to ease off the itch. My doctor gave me some medication and cream, but that did not work, that was before results came in. After I was diagnosed she gave me the medication for the outbreak, but did Not prescribe me any valtrex, or anything for that matter, which I found odd. But I totally understand about the towels, I do the same thing. I am not currently on medication, I still do not know if I could tell if im on an outbreak, they say the first one is the worst, and I only had the first intital outbreak, as far as I know. Try Lotrimin use it on your genitals to help relieve the itch. Otherwise try a different clinic in getting diagnosed. Or as them for the medication as if you were on an outbreak, to see if they help!

I love your Idea. If we all give a little bit I bet the fever will catch on and soon we will have a vaccine. What if we contact that Doctor in fron the State University of Montana.
He has the right idea of using the live virus to make a vaccine. It is the only way to make a vaccine that will work.

you should ask your doctor to write you a prescription for: Nystatin and Triamcinolone Acetonide (Oitment) USP 60MG. Is a great cream and you use a little in the itch area. Works very well. I took Valtrex for voer a year and am taking another medicine now for over 6 months and nothing works. Every month I suffer with the same unconfortable itchy. My ex gave me this crap and I did not know the bastard had herps. I was with him for over two years and did not know that the itching spots was herps. My doctors also all failed me. I complained about it so many times and they told me ” it was nothing, i do not see anything” until I changed doctors and he gave me a blood test and there was, positive. This is so awful. It totally ruined my life and I do not date anymore, since I can not go a single month without breakouts and also I do not know when if I am ever safe to even think of having sex with a person. The last thing I need to to give this awful thing to another person.
Anyways, get yourself this cream(not generic) one and you will feel better in 30 minutes after.

I was pacing around a pharmacy looking for a miracle cure to my cold sore when a Pharmacist told me I wouldn’t find anything that would really work, but that I should take Lysine everyday to keep from getting an outbreak in the future. I wish I knew that man’s name because he is one of my Heroes! The cold sores I’ve gotten since I was about 12 were absolutely enormous. Not something that could be hidden at all. Awful.

Ever since learning what contributes to an outbreak I’ve had tremendous success in suppressing outbreaks. 10 years, no outbreaks!!!

Lysine is taken to balance out your Lysine/Arginine balance. Too much arginine in your system and an outbreak is likely. Google a list of Arginine rich foods and avoid them if you can. A short list is; coffee, chocolate, legumes, peanut butter. All things I love by the way.

Other triggers for cold sores; sunburn, this is HUGE always use lip balm with sunscreen, ALWAYS. Friction; for example, drying your face with a rough towel and dragging the towel over your lips too hard, I had this trigger an outbreak once almost immediately.

Stress. Gotta regulate the stress people. I know how hard that is.

Take the Lysine, Sunscreen on the lips, limit arginine rich foods!!! Good luck, this is an awful curse.

I feel the same way….if you ever come in contact with this reply, i would like to chat, i feel hopeless as well..

perhaps we can give each other support on how to deal with this…at times i feel suicidal.
Not to be cocky, im a good looking guy, a great personality, and great to get along with, and never had any trouble finding someone..but just the thought of going from someone like that to someone whos even afraid to even start talking to someone is horrible.

In short words, i feel like my life is over. Im young, and ironically i never got it by having sex with anyone, not even oral sex. Instead i kissed a guy who didnt bother teling me anything that he had oral herpes, and he gave me a handjob with complete clothes on, which apparently his hands were also infected with perhaps his suliva.

God only knows how much hate i have towards him. I wish every day that he gets his karma.

If anyone would like a friend more than anything, those willing to chat, all are welcome to message me or email me at

Just on the HIV comment… I know someone that is a Harvard grad that did research for a couple years no not on HIV. I asked her about it and she said because the virus mutates all the time, it will be hard to find a cure. Think of it as the flu. We have all these vaccinations but people still get it when they take the vaccination. The flu vaccination is just an educated guess as to what flu will come out that year. I have personally had the flu after getting the vaccination. Herpes should be easyer to cure though, it may be dormant, but it does not mutate like HIV. Hope I would clear that up for you. Oh and a little comment on statistics lol. I was worried about herpes and all, think of it this way… 100% of people have herpes!!! So its 60%-80% have HSV-1… 20% have HSV-2. That is 80%-100%… Chicken pox, shingles/ zoster gets the rest of us lol. Its everywhere, everyone has it…

  190. Anonymous May 21, 2009 at 12:40 am #

I have not had any real outbreaks since I got HSV-2. I have not taken any medication either. Before I could get out of the “denile” phase of my infection, I did not take procautions and got my girlfriend sick. I would use saliva to masterbate and spread this shit to my lips and tongue. Somewhere along the lines, I also rubbed both my eyes and got it all over the lids. I went through the initial outbreak twice, even though there was no actual outbreak. Red little bumps sure, but my immune system must kick ass, cuz they never broke. It has been 8 months and I am still in the same spot. My skin especially ball sack and eyes get itchy. If I stretch the skin on my penis, I can see the hordes of tiny demons deep underneath, trying to claw their way to the surface… but they never do. My skin, from using the same towel again and again during my denile phase (oh, by the way, I did go to the doctors and was not diagnosed 3 times) has left my skin rather rough. It is not baby smooth like it once was. I feel as if my immune system were to shut down, my whole body would break out and I would be one giant blister. BOOM! I am smarter about my towel usage. I use 1 for my face and body, and the other for my genitals…. I just thought I would share. Please reply if you have a similar story. Also, is there something I can take to just make the itch go away?

I tried the broccoli once a day and I am also taking 2 1000mg of lysine once a day and I don’t have any outbreaks. The only time I notice symptoms of an outbreak is the day after me and my husband had rough sex, but I read that trama to the area could trigger an outbreak, but as soon as I noticed symptoms I took 3 1000mg of lysine instead of 2 and my symptoms went away. And I also eat and drink alot of dairy products because they are also high in lysine, and they are very good to– trust me IT WORKS!!!!!!!! A bottle of lysine is about $10 at any GNC but you have to take 1250mg or more a day for it to work!!!!!

While everyone is worried about the funding for a cure why don’t we start the funds our self if everyone that is infected could make some contribution to the funding of the cure for herpes we may be able to start research as soon as funds are availiable. Im no expert on finding a cure but it seems like the shortage on funds is the base of the problem. Their must be sum way all herpes victims could start a fund and be able to use it only towards the research for the cure of herpes. I know its not much but its a start does anyone agree, disagree, or know how we could get started on this. Because if science can’t get started on it fast enough, why not take action ourselves.

  198. Anonymous May 1, 2009 at 10:44 am #

It is far more profitable for pharmaceutical companies to “treat” a disease than to “cure” it. As long as the disease doesn’t kill you they will never attempt to cure it. Valtrex is a cash cow. A cure would eliminate a customer and thus no repeat business. Unfortunately, they only care about the bottom line. Heck, even HIV could probably be cured by this method but since it doesn’t kill quickly they make more off of treatments than a cure. I don’t think anything has been “cured” in a long time. Pharmaceutical companies just aren’t in that business.

  199. Anonymous April 25, 2009 at 8:27 am #

I will share what has worked for me to suppress the outbreaks. This is after years and years of out breaks and trying what I am sure is what everyone else has tried by searching the web. From oxygenated liquid , MSO, red marine algae….etc.
I use 91% rubbing alcohol Walgreens brand and 1000 MG tablets of L-Lysine Nature Made brand
It must be 91% !!!! NOT 70% Isopropyl.
Also must be Nature made 1000mg L-Lysine tablets.
Both are available at your local Walgreens and are inexpensive.
I wash genitals morning and evening.
If you have a current outbreak put on cotton ball and keep it on the out break.
When I started this and stopped the last outbreak I had. I took 2000mg L-Lysine morning, 1000mg noon and 2000Mg evening. Until it was gone. Now once a week I might take 2000mg. this has also kept me from getting any cold or flu this winter.
I am male 5’11 200lbs and athletic build. That is what I have found works for my body type. I hope this helps some one. it can be frustrating.

  200. Anonymous April 20, 2009 at 5:52 pm #

    2. preventive….. the above vaccine is to PREVENT infection. a cure for HSV will be very difficult to find.

Oral and Genital Herpes are in the same family (Herpesviridae) as Mononucleosis, Chicken Pox, Epstein-Barr and Shingles. Anybody on this list not had at least one of these diseases in their lifetime? I think researchers should be giving a little more attention to the spread of this virus type.

He never wanted to repair the marriage but he wanted to hurt me and said to me you have seen my nice side and you will soon see my wicked side! About a month later I started having symptoms. That was three years ago. I have not told a single soul! not one soul. No body! It has never left my mouth. I walk around with so much pain and hurt in my heart. I too have met some one, I am so deeply in love with him he’s some one I use to see before I met my husband. He and I have never had sex, in the past or even this time. I am old fasion as well and don’t beleive in premarital sex. we are boh in love with each other. I know I will have to tell him sooner then I want to. I wish I would never have to have this conversation. What give me hope is the valtrex commercial. It give me hope when I see the couples. One says I have genital herpies and the orher onse says and I still don’t. That give me hope, that when I am force to tell him, I could share with him that we can have a sexual relationship and he dont have to contract the virus if we are carful. That is if he is willing to take the chance. I will add you in my paryers always.

  207. The Herpes Blog November 4, 2009 at 9:19 am #

It is a huge leap from successful testing in mice to success in human trials. Also, it will take an abundance of funding to bring this to fruition. Whether it is the stigma of genital herpes, or the already profitable anti-viral medications in existence, there has consistently been a lack of funding for a herpes vaccine. A herpes vaccine will also be of limited value to those of us already infected with HSV.

While rooting for a future vaccine our best treatment is education and immuno support. Don’t be at war or fight the herpes in your body. Focus, build and have gratitude for the health and immunity in your body. This alone will help to reduce outbreaks.

  208. Anonymous November 3, 2009 at 4:04 pm #

Is there any thing that clearly tells us that there is no longterm side effects of taking a drug like Valtrex daily? Could people be shooting themselve in the foot so to speak by taking a drug like Valtrex daily to simple limit a herpes outbreak?

  212. Anonymous March 14, 2009 at 3:15 pm #

I was diagnosed a year ago. Very painful thing to deal with. 1 partner for the last 7 years. I did not like the idea of taking drugs for the rest of my life so I did some research. In the book “Women’s Bodies Women’s Wisdom by Christiane Northrup, she suggested vitamin C and Odorless garlic capsules and other herbal remedies. I only used the prescription for a 2 months then switched to using the Vitamin C and Garlic. On page 280 of her book she recommends that whenever you feel the slightest twinge or tingling sensation that indicates an outbreak is about to start, take 12 capsules of the garlic then take 3-4 more capusules every 3 or 4 hours for about 3 days. She said that in most cases this prevents an outbreak. I have been doing this for the last year and have found it to be very effective. Hope this information helps.

  213. Anonymous January 30, 2009 at 9:21 pm #

Look at how long the process for phase I, II, and III takes. It will be at least five years before a decent vaccine is out. Herpevac might get clearance in a few years, and it is in Phase III right now. It only helps women who have not yet been infected, and it is only like 50% effective. It uses old vaccine technology of a non live virus, it is very safe… But should a person not have the choice to risk their life if they wanted to try a more experimental vaccine? I hate how our medicine system works in this country. We spend more than any other nation on health care, yet we rank 34’th in the world. What gives? I love the USA, but I realize that we are WAY far away from realizing the potential of our science. We shackle ourselves with monetary, societal, and superstitious hindrances.

I’m resigned to letting my insurance company pay THOUSANDS for my Valtrex or Famvir, and I realize that this is a perpetuation of the root problem… I pray that President Obama can begin to reform our decrepit, greedy, and corrupt medical system.

  214. Anonymous January 30, 2009 at 9:13 pm #

Your just plain wrong. Halford’s vaccine has not killed off it’s test subjects. Do you work for some pharmaceutical company? That might explain your propaganda.

A vaccine would be a miracle and blessing for all humanity. This disease makes people more susceptible to HIV.

    Get a clue.

  215. Anonymous January 30, 2009 at 9:10 pm #

You obviously don’t suffer from this condition. There is a percentage of people that have to struggle with tremendous problems from this virus. Go get infected and see for yourself. Your silence should follow immediately.

  216. Anonymous January 14, 2009 at 5:02 am #

I would also pay what ever it would cost to get rid of the virus for good. They don’t make any money off me other wise, because I have found ways of manage it and it keeps me from having any outbreaks. So why wouldn’t they want to come up with a cure to make money, when they aren’t making it anyway. Because people educate themselfs on how to keep it under control. So lets come out with a cure and make some money!

While herpes is definitely a problem in our society, your opinion is reactionary and not helpful. Most adults have herpes (HSV-1) and contracted it in childhood. This form of the virus can be spread to the genitals and is in fact the primary variant of genital herpes in some populations. Go get the herpes Ig test and you’ll probably be surprised. The virus has been completely sensationalized by drug companies’ attempts to scare the population to buy their new antivirals. What is the real harm of the virus? Aside from the herpes encephalitis, a severe but not particularly common complication, it seems to me that stigma is the primary problem. Antivirals usually control outbreaks quite well and people live normal lives post-infection. In non-responsive cases, obviously the effect on every day life is greater. Your disgust and lack of understanding is a mark of your complete ignorance and propagates the stigma that has been unfairly marked upon people with this disease. I see no reason to try to further stigmatize the herpes positive people reading in this forum. Your silence would be appreciated at least until you learn more about the subject at hand.

  220. Anonymous January 21, 2009 at 9:35 am #

I think it is all about money. Yes people would pay about anything for a cure, but these drug companies are making so much money monthly. If they develope a cure there will only be a short term profit. I hope that when the patent runs out for valtrex there competition comes up with a cure.

    fuck you anonymous

  222. Anonymous November 11, 2008 at 2:13 pm #

People we don’t even know we have it, until somehow you decide to go and check that itchy bumb. It really does not show immediately, and the infected person can give it to anybody they have a contact with, because it is a skin-to-skin contact – genetal area, but still skin-to-skin contact! Please be absolutely aware of what your body tells you! People’s lives are ruined because of this, and I do NOT mean to scare you, but IT IS REALITY! Please go and get tested, before you have a new sexual partner, for any STD, viral and otherwise infectious transmited diseases!!! I’m sure a lot of people would thank you!

A simple google search thwarts your statments.

    Wish it were true though.

Maybe I lack some knowledge as to why this is not the growing trend. But in any case I would like to give my opinion on the matter. Women who have the STD herpes pass the immunity to the babies. The babies then have immunity to the virus. (Cant get herpes) However the babies lose their immunity their mother gave them when they begin creating their own. If possible it would be wise to look more in dept of the infant antibodies for the virus. Maybe subtracting a few they will already lose and preforming test with subjects can provide relief. Nowadays they even have immunity transplants. What the body creates natural please pass along to the next and stop playing guessing games.

Thank you very much for that… i am 23 and I have recently been diagnosed and I am in the same boat you are with minimal partners. I hope they find the vaccination soon.

  227. Anonymous August 4, 2008 at 12:13 pm #

people are not knocking down doors because the companies know that most of these research vaccines have severe side effects (i.e death)

  228. Anonymous June 29, 2008 at 12:25 am #

…but in the case of herpes, it’s because most people who have it don’t know they have it: they’re what are known as asymptomatic carriers. Only a certain percentage of those with herpes would classify themselves as “having an STD” for the simple fact that they don’t realise this is the case. But, yes, somewhere between 20% and 25% of adults in the US are believed to be carrying the HSV-2 virus.

  229. Anonymous June 3, 2008 at 2:14 pm #

In regard to Valtrex, the patent runs out in 2009!! Thus we move toward the production of the vaccine. Once the patent runs out they do not make the profit on the medication thus they are motivated to move toward a new patent and vaccine. This vaccine should have been funded years ago. Thank God the patent on Valtrex is running out!!

Has anyone heard an update on funding for the Montana State University vaccine? This is old news (2006 at least) and should have received some funding by now.

Wanted to share a video I made about potential cures and vaccines against the herpes simplex virus.

    Hope you like it!

  232. Anonymous May 16, 2008 at 7:01 am #

I believe many people are unaware of herpes. People should be informed about how serious it is. One out of five have it. I believe that if more ads were posted in the newspapers, etc. people (teens, men, women)will be informed of this life long STD.

What makes this worst is the fact that when one goes to the hospital, and/or clinic, health care providers don’t want to test people for herpes. Why not?

In terms of the vaccine, I agree that those four out of five that dont have it, should be able to take it against this life long STD.

  233. Anonymous April 16, 2008 at 5:19 am #

I was recently diagnosed with herpes and was not aware of how common it really is. I was told by a health care professional that stats show that 1 in every 4 are infected with some form of the virus, whether orally or genitally, and are not even aware that that have it, and are spreading it to others. I think more money should go toward educating people on the facts of this virus, and get rid of the “only dirty/slutty people get STD’s”. I am 22 yeras old and have only been active with two people my entire life, and I got it. The stigma has to go!

The vaccine, for me is too late, but not too late for someone I may fall in love with later down the line. Are the drug companies going to want all this to happen? Probably not, but the millions infected with it already will still have to buy the drugs, so it will be years before they feel an actual hit from it.

  234. Anonymous April 9, 2008 at 11:58 pm #

Why is the statistic so hard to believe? Do you know how many different types of STD’s there are out there? HSV alone is estimated to infect 1 out of 5. Then there is HPV which is estimated at 1 out of 4. If we look at the stats for the rest of the most common STDs, I think it would be hard to believe how the overall rate of STD infection is not HIGHER than 25%.

Sex has been so glamourized but STD’s have been so demonized (and in the case of AIDS, rightfully demonized) that it is hard to imagine something as beautiful as sex can COMMONLY breed something as ugly as an STD.

  235. Anonymous March 27, 2008 at 7:33 pm #

    Oh wait…..they HAVE funded it.

See article on final trials of a Herpes vaccine on this site!

  236. Anonymous March 27, 2008 at 7:30 pm #

I’m surprised that there aren’t yet any pharmaceutical companies (or NIH?) willing to fund further research into an Herpes vaccine. A lot of people would pay good money for this vaccine: there’s definitely a commercial market for it!

The Herpes virus is incredibly widely spread throughout most industrialised nations: 30% is commonly agreed to be the infection rate. Seems high, but then, everyone’s having sex, so it’s really not surprising, especially as condoms don’t prevent Herpes infections. We just have to face the reality that 1 in 3 people have or have had an STI. Or stop having sex – like that’s gonna happen!

Herpes is more than just unnattractive and uncomfortable. It can cause serious problems in unborn babies, and has been linked to pre-eclampsia (which can kill infant and mother both) and to cervical cancer.

  237. Anonymous March 27, 2008 at 7:06 am #

The the people who think companies don’t want a vaccine to protect Valtrex profits:

    1) Only glaxo-wellcome reaps profits for Valtrex, why wouldn’t competing companies want to make a vaccine?

    2) Glaxo is currently spending hundreds of millions testing a herpes vaccine, simplirix, which would eat into their Valtrex profits.

    3) Valtrex’s patent expires in 2009, so your whole theory is based on a false premise.

  238. Anonymous March 23, 2008 at 12:25 pm #

Have we heard anymore about the the consideration of this vaccine? It’s very interesting. Sadly, there IS more money in the treating of a disease, not the cure.

  239. Anonymous March 19, 2008 at 12:32 pm #

“There are tens of millions that would go for this vaccine, how can he NOT have companies beating down his door?

Every afflicted single person would be buying this vaccine for their SO in a heartbeat.”

yes, but there is a limitless supply of money for companies that are selling treatments to the infection, as people must keep buying these over and over. Once a vaccine is made, the pot of money dries up. Unfortunate, but vaccines are not good investments for businesses.

  240. Anonymous March 4, 2008 at 2:28 am #

I didn’t realize it was so common in the US.

  241. Anonymous March 4, 2008 at 7:47 am #

The stats are accurate. Look them up.

  242. Anonymous March 5, 2008 at 11:25 am #

Finding a cure…or even just a vaccine would greatly improve the self-confidence and worth of the nation and the world!!
Can we get one now, please?!

  243. Anonymous February 25, 2008 at 1:40 pm #

Although herpes is a wide spread disease, your assertion of 1/3 of the population is incorrect.

  244. Anonymous February 21, 2008 at 4:27 am #

Don’t upset by herpes. 1/3 of USA living with herpes. And most of herpes people can manage it.

  245. Anonymous February 13, 2008 at 10:39 am #

The number might be closer to 2 000 000 or so.

  246. Anonymous February 12, 2008 at 5:06 am #

Please let me know the dateline of vaccine. My mail address is

  247. Anonymous February 3, 2008 at 12:22 pm #

You’re honestly trying to tell us that 70 million of the 300 million people in the US are afflicted with STDs? That’s like 1 in every 4 people. A little fucking ridiculous even for something you just made up.

  248. Anonymous January 30, 2008 at 8:19 pm #

    “no financial benefit”
    – frankly you have no idea what you are talking about. why would one scientist not want to create a vaccine that people want (see below) just because there is a large prevention medication market? they are two different financial interests and the former scientist has everything to gain from creating a vaccine.

    – i agree.

There is no financial benefit to curing disease. There are drugs that prevent outbreaks and people are dependent on these drugs. Valtrex will have millions of life long customers. If there were a cure wouldn’t drug companies loose billions of dollars?

  252. hillbilly June 28, 2007 at 11:40 am #

how come it is taking so long to find a vaccine for herpes? How come you cant use any type of chemotherapy to destroy it ? or when will there be a vaccine ?

  253. Anonymous April 1, 2007 at 10:13 pm #

70 million are afflicted with STDs in the U.S. alone and an estimated 200-400 million worldwide.

  254. Anonymous October 13, 2006 at 11:20 pm #

There are tens of millions that would go for this vaccine, how can he NOT have companies beating down his door?

i got herpes from my x before he went to the army. i hate him every day for it. i hate myself for leaving my first love for him. and i hate myself for not seeing the signs that he was playin me. i also hate myself for giving it to three people already including my best friend. who in result hates me now. ive considered killing myself, but i havent yet. i dont think i will. but herpes ruiened my life and i dont think ill ever get over the depression. even with these stupid pills and all the drinking/drugs i do. fuck life. fuck chad. and fuck herpes.

  256. Anonymous May 22, 2010 at 10:43 pm #

Personally i believe they already have cures and vaccines for many of the diseases. the difference is who gets it and who doesnt. Cures and vaccines are those who have money. I talking BIG MONEY. The rest of us are just cash cows for the drug companies. What the government wants me to believe is that with all of this technology, classified and top secret info there’s no cure for herpes? come on man. as we already know about the non-profit in cures doesnt mean that they dont have them. What if the president caught HIV/AIDS. You really think they wouldnt give him something to make that shit go away? when one starts to do research in depth you will find these fuckers are hiding everything from us because really we’re nothing but cattle to them. Why buy the cow when you can continue to get the milk for free.

im 18 years old and found out about 2 months ago i have herpes. went to 3 different docs and none of them could tell me what was wrong. i could not walk, i had every flu symptom, i didnt pee for 3 days because it hurt so bad. after about 2 weeks, finally i went to the emergency room and got the news. i kept thinking they were wrong, and it was a mistake. when reality finally set in, i wanted to die. i felt so dirty. i kept thinking of that stupid guy. we were not in a relationship, auctually, i barley knew him. it was a one night stand at a party. i was so discusted with myself. i cant even discribe the feeling of hatred i had for myself…

it seems to be getting better tho. the emotional part of it at least. its only been a month, but i feel like im moving on. i dont think about it as much, and when i do, i no longer have that discusted feeling with myself..not really at least. i have not yet had anoher outbreak either.

the thing im scared of most is spreading it. i have been doing my research about it for a while, but i still have some questions i hope someone can answer for me.

besides the tingley feeling, is there any other way to know before you get an outbreak?
is the like an itch or something? and how long does it ususally last before the outbreak?
can i spread it even when there is no sores?
and if so, is there any way to know?
how can i tell the difference between razer burn, an ingrown hair, and an outbreak?
can i spread it through a pool or shower?
and you spread it through oral sex? ( stupid question i know, but just to be sure)
are the other outbreaks as painfull as the first?( i read its not, but i want opions from people who know first hand)
i used abreva and it seemed to help for my first outbreak, what else seems to help speed up the healing process?
does having a healthy diet help reduce the chance of a outbreak?

these are only some of the many questions i have. if you have any information you might think helpfull, please let me know. im scared to death of this, and getting some answers would really help me out a lot.

    thank you so much

  258. Anonymous May 3, 2010 at 9:51 pm #

That is really messed up not to tell the person you are with that you have a disease that they could catch and that would alter the rest of their life! i was honest with someone about having HSV 1, and ended up getting HSV 2 from her- she did not tell me until a few days later that she had herpes and was having an outbreak around the time we slept together. And in case you weren’t aware the HSV 2 outbreaks are a lot worse. You owe it to the person you’re with to be completely honest and upfront about your status so they can make an educated decision about whether to be in a relationship with you. Absolute honesty and respect for one another will go a long way toward having a healthy relationship.

I have a 2 year old son and as his mother I am terrified of kissing him touching him changing his diaper giving him baths so not to pass him anything. If I would ever in a million years thought this would happen I would’ve been celibate for the rest of my life because each day goes by that I cant kiss my son or take our little daily baths together breaks my heart into a million pieces over and over again. This is the worst feeling in the world. I pray a CURE is made available soon enough to where I can still provide my son with lots of kisses and hugs and not be terrified. THere is another thing that just plagues me. Herpes infected individuals are 2 to 3 x’s more likely to contract hiv when in contact with it than non infected persons. Could you imagine not only giving your child something like this but making them 2 to 3 more times susceptible to contract hiv if in contact with it. I know a vaccine is on the horizon, but what about a cure. When my son gets booboos and tells me to kiss it, I cant. I immediately just start crying, hug him and tell him mommy’s sorry baby, Im so sorry.
