I am all for animal rights, to an extent. I mean, fur is murder, and who needs fur anyway? And those Japanese should definitely stop slaughtering dolphins and whales. That's just wrong. However, there is a such thing as taking an issue a bit too far, and that is exactly what PETA has done...again.
PETA, known for their outrageous activist stunts, has found their way into the headlines yet again with a recent letter they sent to Ben & Jerry's. Why, you ask? I'll let the letter itself explain.
"On behalf of PETA and our more than 2 million members and supporters, I'd like to bring your attention to an innovative new idea from Switzerland that would bring a unique twist to Ben and Jerry's.
Storchen restaurant is set to unveil a menu that includes soups, stews, and sauces made with at least 75 percent breast milk procured from human donors who are paid in exchange for their milk. If Ben and Jerry's replaced the cow's milk in its ice cream with breast milk, your customers-and cows-would reap the benefits...
The breast is best! Won't you give cows and their babies a break and our health a boost by switching from cow's milk to breast milk in Ben and Jerry's ice cream?"
Yeah. Wow.
I understand the sentiment - cruel treatment of cows and calves, yadda, yadda, etc. But... I simply can't bring myself to even think about buying breast milk ice cream. If you want to make it and eat it you go right ahead, but I'm sorry, it's just not for me.
For one, it's gross. But that aside, I don't think it's a good idea scientifically. While the PETA letter does outlines some of the links between cow's milk and health issues, they tactfully neglect to mention the possible risks of using human breast milk. HIV, tuberculosis, and other diseases as well as some drugs and antibiotics are transmitted through breast milk. So without some FDA-approved method of making breast milk safe for general consumption, you can bet that I won't drink any (and, considering the low demand, I doubt there's guidelines currently in place). To add to that, no formal studies (that I could find) have looked at how drinking human breast milk affects an adult, so for all we know, it could have all the same health drawbacks as cow's milk.
To be fair and unbiased, there are some people who suggest that breast milk is beneficial for adults as well as children. One study from 1995 did show that a protein in human breast milk, alpha-lactalbumin, killed brain tumor cells in a test tube. The same team used the compound in 2004 to destroy warts caused by HPV. Some patients have tried consuming human breast milk to treat cancer or boost immune systems, but there has been no scientific study that shows whether drinking breast milk does, in fact, help in those situations.
Bottom line: It's still gross. It's effects are wholly unknown in adults. And again, it's gross. I agree with Ben & Jerry's response: "We applaud PETA's novel approach to bringing attention to an issue, but we believe a mother's milk is best used for her child."

there is a clear biological explanation (incest being the classic example). And for some taboos there is little or none (food taboos come to mind).

Does it really make sense to drink the milk of another species but not to drink the milk of our own?
The health benefit of breast milk would likely surpass cow milk because cow milk is really meant for cows. Human milk is 'formulated' and meant for human consumption. So is it really that far-fetched to suggest that we drink the milk of our own species?
Yes, but...

In principle, you're right, but that doesn't mean it's necessarily good for us. For one, breast milk is for BABY humans, not adults, whose nutritional demands are very different. Two, because it is produced by us, it is much more likely to carry proteins, lipids, etc that are compatible with our systems, which allows for it to be a lot more harmful. Put it this way - if a hormone is unknown to your body, odds are it's broken down in the digestive process and you use the building blocks. But if that hormone is designed by your body for other purposes, your body won't break it down - it'll think it's a signal for something and tries to react to it. This is part of the reason it'd be crucial to understand how our milk affects us before it's allowed to be used wide-scale. While it may carry beneficial components (like the people who drink it to cure cancer claim), it may also carry harmful ones.
Gross? Have you tried it recently?

For all the taboo associated with it, it tastes AMAZING. I was sure to partake as often as possible while my wife was lactating with our 2 kids.
I would say that disease might be an issue, as long as it is pasteurized there should be no problem. I don't understand how incest is an issue (maybe I am naïve).
It has evolved as the perfect food for our children. There is no need for taboo. But in order to pull it off, there will need to be alot of women who are done feeding their children to continue pumping. The logistics would be insane. Not to mention increased fixation of men on a certain part of the female anatomy.

Gross or not, there's no way that Ben and Jerry's would be able to procure enough human milk to make even 1% of the ice cream volume they currently produce.
Who are these 2 million people that are part of PETA?? Good luck to them if one of their loved ones ever gets an illness that needs to be treated with any sort of pharmaceutical compound (which currently is ALL of them) that was tested on a lab animal.

Interesting piece.
This brings up an interesting question about human psychology. I agree that the whole idea is gross. But why? Why is it any grosser than drinking cow's milk? It seems like maybe it should *less* gross, if anything, given that it is a bit weird to drink the fluid of an animal, and given that there's nothing gross with humans of a certain age drinking human milk.
For some other taboos, there is a clear biological explanation (incest being the classic example). And for some taboos there is little or none (food taboos come to mind). Where does this one fit in?

People should stop discussing anything that would take something to an extreme. Cow's milk is for calf and breast milk is for baby's. Don't think of any other possibilities that would make some multi billion companies to get a patent to milk ladies on a large scale and start a breast milk plant.
