American Heart Association: Statins and Fish Oil Protect Heart

The study reports that the use of fish oil in conjuction with statins, a cholesterol-lowering drug, had a greater effect on reducing heart-related maladies than just statins alone. These conditions included:

In two separate studies, regular fish oil supplements were found to protect the skin from the harmful UV rays of the sun:

In just one month the volunteers were noticeably less likely to burn than before taking the oil, rising to 33 per cent less likely in three months.

A second group who suffered sun allergies doubled their skins' defence against UV rays after six months.

Dr Lesley Rhodes, a dermatology expert, thinks it could have implications in preventing skin cancer...

Fish Oil Improves Toddler Learning Skills
A study on fish oil with pre-school children in the UK may persuade many parents to give their toddlers pharmaceutical-grade fish oil. Why? Fish oil was brain food for these toddlers:

After just six weeks of daily doses of Omega-3, parents reported a transformation in the behaviour and learning abilities of children as young as 20 months old.

*Oink* Fish Oil Boosts Immune System in Pigs!

*Oink* Fish Oil Boosts Immune System in Pigs!

Great news if you're a pig! Adding daily supplements of fish oil to your trough can improve your immune system!

When animal physiologist Jeff Carroll was with the Animal Physiology Research Unit in Columbia, Mo., he worked with Gary Allee, a swine nutritionist at the University of Missouri, to investigate the benefit of adding various natural supplements to pig diets. They found that fish oil in young weaned pigs' diets can help build up their immune systems.

Carroll, currently the research leader at the Livestock Issues Research Unit located north of Lubbock, Texas, says it's been known that fish oils containing long-chain omega-3 fatty acids can be nutritious additions to a person's diet because they appear to lower the risk of cholesterol and heart disease. However, the Columbia studies showed that compared to corn oil and other supplements, different levels of menhaden fish oil helped 18-day-old pigs better prepare to fight off endotoxin challenges. The omega-3 fatty acids are absorbed through the intestine and help the immune cells cope with disease. U.S. producers could benefit from this finding because fish oil is less expensive than antibiotics.

That last statement is most important. Pretty soon, not only will we not have to worry about antibiotics in our meats, but we'll also be getting more omega-3 fatty acids as well.

Omega-6 Levels in Brain Linked to Depression

A new study found that depressed rats had higher levels of Omega-6 fatty acids in their brains. How do omega-6 fatty acids, which are the polyunsaturated fats found in most vegetable oils, cause depression? And how do omega-3 fatty acids alleviate it?

Click to continue reading about how omega-6 fatty acids cause depression and how omega-3 fatty acids relieve it, as well as more about the study on rats.

Experts Say Avoid Farmed Salmon

Experts Say Avoid Farmed Salmon

A new study examining the dioxin content of wild and farm-raised salmon indicates that people should avoid eating farmed salmon. Why?

After analyzing the dioxin content of farm-raised and wild salmon captured in different regions, a g roup of North American researchers found that farm-raised types contain between 3 and 10 times more dioxin than wild salmon.

Using guidelines from the World Health Organization, the researchers calculate that consumers should eat fewer than 10 meals of farm-raised salmon per month, and limit fish that's raised on northern European farms to 4 times per month.

Fish Oil + Exercise = Fat Loss

Fish Oil + Exercise = Fat Loss

A new study out of Australia tested the benefits of fish oil on body fat composition:

Overweight to obese adults at heightened risk of coronary disease participated in a 12-week intervention trial that examined the effect of omega-3 fish oil taken daily in combination with moderate aerobic exercise three times a week. These people were compared with three groups taking fish oil, sunflower oil or a combination of sunflower oil and exercise.

As well as being overweight, participants were diagnosed as having metabolic syndrome, a cluster of symptoms associated with obesity that include hypertension, high blood triglycerides and insulin resistance or heightened insulin levels, a precursor to diabetes.

What happened? To find out, continue reading: Fish Oil + Exercise = Fat Loss.

DHA in Fish Oil Significantly Aids Infant Vision and Brain Development

DHA in Fish Oil Significantly Aids Infant Vision and Brain Development

For those that don't know, DHA stands for Docosahexaenoic Acid, and it's one of the two omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil. Your body cannot create DHA so it has to get it from your diet (It can, however, produce DHA from other fatty acids in a very limited fashion. Read about DHA synthesis at the end of an older entry on Heart Disease.) ARA stands for Arachidonic Acid, which is available in a variety of foods, such as egg yolks, and it also easily manufactured by your body with the use of omega-6 fatty acids found prevalently in vegetable oils.

Unleaded, Diesel or Fish Oil?

Unleaded, Diesel or Fish Oil?

In the search for fossil-fuel alternatives for automobiles, some are turning to hydrogen power, some to electric power and some to... fish oil?

Apparently, a new kind of fuel is emerging called biodiesel, which this article describes as "a mixture of around 20 percent vegetable oil and 80 percent diesel." However, CancerWEB Online Medical dictionary's definition of biodiesel indicates that alternatives to vegetable oil include microalgae oils and even animal fats. According to the article, a Canadian company is already selling this, albeit using a special recipe:

Wilson Fuels, a Nova Scotia company, is already marketing biodiesel fuel. However, it uses fish oil instead of vegetable oil.

Sounds like the PERFECT idea for all that health-food grade fish oil out there!

Fish Oil Reduces Triglycerides in HIV Positive

February 24, 2005 by marshmallowcreme

Antiretrovirus drugs, which are drugs taken to fight retroviruses such as HIV, apparently raise triglyceride levels in the blood. However, A new study presented Wendesday at the Twelfth Annual Retrovirus Conference in Boston revealed that fish oil reduced and normalized triglycerice levels in those that took it:

After eight weeks of treatment, the 58 patients randomised to receive [fish oil] had experienced a median 26% reduction in triglyceride levels, compared to a 1% increase in the placebo group (p = 0.003). Triglyceride levels normalised in 22% of [fish oil] recipients, but in only 7% of the placebo group (p = 0.012). The reduction in triglyceride levels was sustained during the open label treatment period among those originally randomised to [fish oil], whilst median levels fell by 21% during this phase among those who originally received placebo.

Great news for those that are HIV positive! Click the following link for the full article: Fish Oil Reduces Triglycerides in HIV Positive
