I'm From Austria ... and From Europe - Multiple Identities in the Global Village

May 18, 2009 by prandd

A love for one's country does not preclude a love for one's continent - instead, the two usually go hand in hand. That is the conclusion reached by a study carried out on the topic of national identity. Unique in terms of its scale and scope, new results generated by this study were presented in Vienna to mark the 25th anniversary of the International Social Survey Programme (ISSP).

Prostate, Protein & Proliferation

April 27, 2009 by prandd

A protein shown to be present in prostate cancer cells can inhibit the growth of tumours. Called the SOCS-1 protein, it belongs to the SOCS (suppressor of cytokine signalling) class of proteins. These produce very different effects depending on the type of tumour.

Viennese collections contain artefacts from the Islamic world

April 17, 2009 by prandd

For the first time, all the works of art held in collections in Vienna that have their origins in the Islamic world are being documented. Scientific studies are also being carried out on many of these artefacts. Closer examination of this group of objects has revealed that the total number of pieces involved is far greater than originally assumed.

Life Expectancy on the Rise - Even for Quantum States

April 15, 2009 by prandd

For the first time, scientists have succeeded in measuring and controlling the lifetime of quantum states with potential use in optoelectronic chips.

Historians are now able to reveal detailed information that shows the Imperial Court in Vienna “managed” its sizeable staff of up to 3,000 with the efficiency of a modern-day company.

Stable Thanks to Dynamics - DNA Component Resists UV Radiation

February 23, 2009 by prandd

Complex computer simulations have, for the first time, allowed scientists to examine in detail the processes that help to ensure the stability of DNA when exposed to UV light. The findings, achieved primarily in relation to DNA component 9H-adenine, have been published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society (JACS).

January 19, 2009 by prandd

A research project currently being carried out by the Austrian Science Fund FWF is examining how intellectually disabled people experience the process of entering and contributing to the working world.

The VW-Beetle - An Austrian Identity Created by German Craftmanship?

November 24, 2008 by prandd

The fact that people in Austria now feel truly Austrian is in part due to a German car - the Volkswagen Beetle. That is the first finding of an Austrian Science Fund FWF project that is examining the extent to which consumer goods have influenced the formation of the Austrian nation. The project reveals that, in the decades crucial to the nation's creation, the Volkswagen became an object of identification and integration for the Austrians. The next stage will investigate the influence foodstuffs have had on this process.

A Molecular Identity Crisis - A "Ribozyme Without RNA"

November 3, 2008 by prandd

Not all enzymes that are assumed to require an RNA component in order to function do actually contain RNA. This surprising discovery was made during a project supported by the Austrian Science Fund FWF that focussed on the enzyme RNase P. Contrary to accepted scientific theory, the project team from Vienna has long believed that certain forms of RNase P do not contain any RNA. They have now succeeded in proving their point through a series of sophisticated experiments, the results of which are being published today in the journal CELL.

Relationships Between Quantum Dots - Stability and Reproduction

October 20, 2008 by prandd

Theoretical proof of stable and measurable states extending over two quantum dots and creating offspring has now been provided for the first time. This supports the notion of what is known as Quantum Darwinism, which makes the selection and reproduction of quantum mechanical states responsible for the way in which our reality is perceived. These results of an Austrian Science Fund FWF project were recently published in Physical Review Letters and will play a part in the future development of quantum information technology.
