Science Blog was started in August 2002. It lives, breathes and eats press releases from research organizations around the globe. Most of what you read here are press releases from the outfits named in the stories themselves. Got a news story you think belongs here?
Let's talk.
The other half of the equation is
blog posts from readers like you. So if you have an interest in science,

I am Rhesus Negative and been lead to believe that my/our bloodline is evil/reptilian. I really don't feel in my gut that this is true. My partner is Rhesus Negative too, i only found this out a few days ago but when we met four years ago, it sounds crazy but it was almost like time stopped, we where in a nightclub, we could not hear sound or see people all we saw was each other and it felt like a deep connection that neither of us had ever experienced... almost telepathic. We often finish each others sentences and know what the other is going to say. It was almost like we were brought together. Most people tell us we sound crazy but we know what we felt. Also since we have been together we have become more disconnected from the everyday norm, we both believe that every aspect of our lives is controlled by Governments and big wigs. We have spoken to friends about this and they think we are borderline insane. Personally i think people that think they are free are asleep and need to wake up but the sad fact is alot of people never will. :-(
It would be great to have more natural options for exterminating pests. Especially certain ones that tend to be resistant to many of the commercially available pesticides. Bed bugs, for example, tend to be hard to kill because the majority of the chemical pesticides that are strong enough to kill them are either outright banned or simply too dangerous to use in a home environment. Even through a professional like Terminix, bed bugs can be quite unruly. If they created a biopesticide that could be used safely indoors but carries the strength of some of the chemical pesticides (even if ONLY for bed bugs), it would alleviate a lot of the problems associated with a bed bug infestation, especially the part about getting rid of them!
This hype is leading up to the next step. They are now following page seven of the tobacco control handbook instructions to ban patio smoking AFTER business owners spent thousands of dollars to build them for their smoking customers. This clearly shows that these people have ABSOLUTLY NO CONCERN for local businesses. It's the "inside-out" provision on page seven. Once these people find gullible lawmakers and get a foot in the door, there's no stopping them.
http://www.no-smoke.org/pdf/CIA_Fundamentals.pdf
Notice that there's no mention of patios in the model "smoking ban for dummies" on page eight. They didn't want that to be seen when the bans were first brought up.

Look, to all of you who are saying that marijuana is a gateway drug: It's not. That's like saying bread is a gateway drug. All drug users ate bread before they moved on to harder drugs. *gasp* Bread must be a gateway drug! No, but really, think about it like this: In a world where all recreational drugs are illegal, yes, marijuana will be a gateway drug. Why? Well, if you're buying from a dealer who just so happens to have more than just marijuana, well, one day when you're picking up a dime or some such from him, he might ask you if you want to try X drug. Now, if marijuana had been legal, and you were instead buying from say, a typical store of sorts, this situation would never have arisen. With legalization, the amount of exposure the harder drugs receive is diminished. So, legalize marijuana!
Im T.IMTHIYAS from INDIA & i have a very new & innovative approach for the methodology of meteor deflection..im sure about the threat caused by the meteor named 2004MN4 TO our world & even if we trace anyother now we have no time but just have to wait for it to collide with the earth . i was indeed facinated by the ideas posted by the various scientist about meteor deflection but no one is interested in using nukes...but mine is very simple indeed a new approach over the use of ion engine rockets for pushing the meteor from its path, but the ion engines cant provide sufficient thrust if the meteor is of enormous size. But im sure that my system accompanied by an ion thruster can perform the necessary. . . My systematic approach is that the use of 2 repelling magnetic fields...Some assumptions might explain this worthwile. . just take a magnet & fix it on a large drum. Take another in your hand and make them repel each other..a small force given by your hand to overcome the repelling force is the work done by the ion engine rockets and the remaining pushing work is done by the opposing magnetic fields. henceforth though the surface area of the obect to be pushed is large ,the repelling force experienced by the 2 small opposing fields might perform the pushing action..Hope my idea is clear but has a lot to be worked upon & i will be glad to work with NASA over anyother systems regarding meteor deflection projects as a citizen of this WORLD & share my many more crazy ideas also..if anyone reading this have alternative ideas can share them with me online at imthiyas_mech@yahoo.com .Thank you.
Recent advances in cancer therapeutics have led to the discovery of biomarkers that can predict patient response to certain drugs. Screening for mutations in the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGRF) prior to non-small cell lung cancer treatment, for example, has been shown to indentify patients who are likely to respond to treatment with erlontinib. This maximizes the drug's impact, and spares patients who are not likely to benefit from being subjected to potentially debilitating side effects.

Most men do not remain fertile until they die. Male fertility (sperm count) declines gradually after age 40. Guys, if you want children, try to do it before age 45. After that age there is an increased risk of passing on birth defects due to increases in abnormal sperm. A 22 year old's healthy eggs won't completely counteract the risks. Males also have biological clocks. Elderly fathers are an exception rather than the rule.
The recent review by Harvard's James J Lee in Personality and Individual Differences
Volume 48, Issue 2, January 2010, Pages 247-255, showed these stereotype theories to be extremely dubious at best.
Another problem with this theory is that the gaps can be measured at age 3. [see Rushton, J.P. and Jensen, A.R. (2005). Thirty Years of Research on Race Differences in Cognitive Ability. Psychology, Public Policy, and Law, Vol. 11, No. 2, 235-294.]
Also, reaction time measures which correlate with g show the same patterns with East Asians performing better on average. This also holds with those adopted into upper middle class households.

Another factor which suggests stereotyping isn't the whole explanation is research on brain size and cognitive ability.

I have read with a great interest the article concerning the results of the research
ran by the team under the supervision of Prof. Atalay Ayele. The results of your research confirmed my thesis that the African continent will split into two parts. Please see my interview from the 1995:
http://www.anona.com.pl/tumalski/Afryka_do_podzialu.pdf
However, the reason of Africa’s splitting into two parts is not the volcanic activity, which is a secondary phenomenon of the plate tectonics.
The direct reason for the break of the eastern African continent is Africa’s reaching the earth crust’s dent, which presently lies beneath the Indian Ocean.
Please see my article "Earthquake prediction; Principles"
http://www.anona.com.pl/tumalski/EGU2007-J-05526-3.pdf
which I presented on the General Assembly of the European Geosciences Union 2007 in Vienna.
My article proves the existence of a direct connection between the Sumatra seaquake of the 2004 and the growth of the earth crust crack in the eastern Africa.
Yours sincerely,
Tadeusz Tumalski
It's a personal choice, It should not be the government's job to tell me what I can and can not do with my body if I don't hurt other people in the process.
Heres a little background for you. I do not smoke weed, actually never had. I do read the writing on the wall however. But the data is all present. Marijuana is no worse for you than alcohool or cigarettes, do some research you stepford moms...
With those people who have diseases such as HIV, MS, Rumatiod authritis, Fibromyalgia ect. its used to actually treat them. And has been proven in many studies to have less side effects than the next prescription medication. Its used as a pain reliever, stops nasuea and vomitting. and these people deserve the best treatement possible. Marijuana has also been tested to not be a "gateway drug". Oh yeah... its also being tested as a treated for Chemotherapy on a little sidenote. And recreational usage: get high, or dont, just dont be stupid, same with alcohool. Its all about what YOU want to do, so go ahead and legalize and give people their freedom of choice all ready...
I know you're scared, but your life is not over. I've had herpes for about 1 and 1/2 years now. I am 21 years old, and the person who gave it to me was my first boyfriend. We had been together for 6 years. He cheated on me and when I got the virus he showed NO SYMPTOMS. I am now engaged to a wonderful guy who also has the virus(not the person who gave it to me). Right now, you're hurting, right now, you feel like you'll never feel attractive again. You feel like a leper, and that is part of the process. In time, you will come to terms with this and realize that your life is still beautiful, and that there are WORSE things that could have happened. If you want to look around and see others who share this experience, try positivesingles.com. This is not a spam commerical, this site is where I met my fiancee, and I can't promise that for you, but I can at least promise that you will feel better seeing the HUNDREDS if not THOUSANDS of people who will try to talk to you, and you'll see that you can have a normal life. Your symptoms will fade. True, you'll always have the virus and you'll always be contagious, but you will not be in pain forever. My first outbreak caused me to miscarry, and it was the worst experience I have ever gone through. But I am okay now, and you will be too. No te preocupes. Todo va a salir bien.

If you really want to be picking nits, as this is certainly beginning to look like, our present computer architectures cannot even represent polynomials without approximation. Even the difference between floating-point quantities looses a significant amount of precision! (Even division doesn't loose precision nearly as quickly. [Besides, don't you know that even integer division, unless you mean the Modulo function, is far from "exact"?] Perhaps you need to refresh your understanding of floating-point computer architecture. [Floating-point division can be as accurate as the floating-point representation will allow, meaning that the error is less that one half of one unit in the last place [ulp]. See the IEEE floating-point specifications.])
Besides, as I pointed out below, Range modification (changing the range, is what the rational polynomials do, not changing the domain) already nullifies your argument that polynomials are the way to go.
Besides, as I have already pointed out, there are important cases where rational polynomials are "exact" (as "exact" as the floating-point representation will allow) where one would have to use significantly more piecewise polynomials to get the same level of approximation, provided floating-point roundoff error doesn't get in your way to the point of making it an impossible task.
So, I advise you to get off this "only polynomials" kick.
David
It's not about the computer speed. It's about the computer architecture. Computers cannot calculate a division exactly (unless it's an integer division). There is always some error. Actually, division is terribly conditioned, so, saying only a division is not proper. Similarly, choosing e.g. Gaussian radial basis functions will not let you represent exponential functions exactly. Exponentials cannot be represented exactly on a computer, whatever basis functions you choose. If you would like to really change the basis, you would have to change the computer architecture. Changing the basis functions can make the result better, but you can get the same effect by adding more knots or increasing the approximation order or changing the domain.
My point is that everything comes down to polynomial operations on a computer eventually. It's that simple. Do not think only about the mathematical theory. In practice, there are some particular limitations caused by the computer architecture.
to the guy that says he used $1000 a day worth of dope for 10 years, that is utter BS dude. that is like over 2 million dollars worth of heroin. I highly doubt that you managed to come up with that kind of money to support your habit. Especially considering from the sounds of it you still lived with mommy and daddy. Of course they are probably rich as fuck considering they could afford to pay for a doctor to come stay with you for 2 days straight. I hate people like you that have it so fucking easy. My parents wouldn't even help me get into an apartment so I could goto the methadone treatment facility in the city near where I used to live. Apparently I am not worth $400 to them. Oh well, they'll be the ones that get stuck paying the $5000 it is going to cost to bury me when I end up dead from doing dope. I shootup about 3 grams a day of dope when I can afford it. The days that I cannot pay for my dope are like a living hell. I go into convulsions and am drenched in sweat but because I don't have rich parents to take care of me while I am trying to kick this habit, I'm stuck with it. I don't even care if I die at this point. After finding out my own family doesn't even give a fuck about me, I lost all reason to live. I honestly cannot wait to fucking die because that is apparently the only way I am ever going to get off heroin. I tried calling the local detox doctor and there is a 6 month waiting list to even get an appointment. It pisses me off because I know that the majority of these people aren't even really addicts, they just THINK they are. I bet the majority of them have never even shot up before and think they are addicts because they were popping 10 vicodin a day. Now these idiots are just going to end up addicted to bupenorphine, which is wayyyyy more hardcore than hydrocodone. I bet these people even get "high" when they take it. I've taken 30 subs at once before and didn't even get a slight buzz from it. I'm to the point now where I can shootup a gram of dope and not even get a slight buzz from it. I'm going to force myself into withdrawals this week so I can actually get high again. I'm also going to buy abunch of Xanax bars so I can overdose and finally get off this fucking nightmarish drug.
ASSHOLE!
INDIAN(BHARATH)-IN TAMIL (NAVALAN THEEVU)
WHEN THE TAMIL IS DEVELOPED WITH ITS GRAMMER AND SCRIPTS THE AARYANS(KALAPRAAS) ASURANS(AFRICANS) ENTRED INDIA WITH THEIR GOOD PHYSCUE AND HEALTHY STRUCTURE.WHERE TAMLIANS WERE WEAKY BODY STRUCTURE WITH SOFT CHARACTRES DOMINATED /RULED BY CRIMINAL AARYANS AND ASURANS FIRST THEY MADE THEIR UNWRITTEN LANGUAGE WITH WRITTEN SCRIPT OF TAMIL ,SLOWLY AND FORCEFULLY OCCUPIED THE TAMIL AREAS SO THAT TAMILIANS RUNAWAY FROM THE NORTH TO TOWARDS SOUTH ( DRAVIDIAN NAME DERIVED FROM THIS ) THEN DEVNAGRI DEVELOPED LATTER CALLED SANSKRIT.SANSKRIT IS LIKE ENGLISH (DEVELOPED BY STOLEN FROM OTHER LANGUAGE WORDS).SO THAT SANSAKRIT CAN'T STAND INDUGUVALLY LIKE TAMIL. IN PURE TAMIL LANGUAGE U CAN'T FIND SINGLE SANSKRIT WORD.BUT U CAN FIND SANSKRIT ORGINATED AND DEVELOPED FROM TAMIL. STRUCTURE THOSE WHO DON'T KNOW HISTORY LEARN TAMIL DEEPLY AND THEN COMMENT ABOUT THAT LANGUAGE.

Although many other marine organisms have similar green fluorescent proteins, GFP traditionally refers to the protein first isolated from the jellyfish aequorea victoria. The GFP from A. victoria has a major excitation peak at a wavelength of 395 nm and a minor one at 475 nm. Its emission peak is at 509 nm which is in the lower green portion of the visible spectrum. The GFP from the sea pansy (Renilla reniformis) has a single major excitation peak at 498 nm.

It is an annual, of up to 1 meter of height, little graft plant, with the oblong leaves, sinuosodentadas in the edges, with the petals of several colors, targets, pink, red and violets, this indicates findrxonline in article, with a dark spot in the base. The fruit is a capsule of good size. It is spread by the south of Europe, North Africa, central and South Asia and America. It exists in the Iberian Peninsula, in addition to the narcotic, another plant with similar effects, the Chelidonium majus, well-known with the names of golondrinera grass or the wanderers, verruguera grass and celidueña. Latex removes rarely from the incisions of the immature fruits and of other parts of the plant. This latex coagulates in contact with the air. The opium is a mixture of ranges, different resins, sugars and other substances, between which 20 have pharmacological activity, almost all alkaloids like: morphine, codeine, thebaine, narcobathtub, narceína and papaverina; most important of all of them it is the morphine, contained in the opium in variable proportion (3-22 %) and to which it confers his main qualities.
hey am an asian girl from malaysia. i've been dating a nigerian for almost a year now. we staying together for like 8 months now and it doesn't work well. we fight almost everyday because of any issues. for your information, we are in a different religion, different race (definately), different country and we have nothing in common at all. at first when we started dating, it was so sweet but now it is getting bitter. but we can't live without each other. we past through hell eventhough it is not even up to 6 months we were dating. everybody was against us and they tried everything they can to separate us. but we got through that hell together, and right now we have problems dealing with each other. it is like we don't even know how to communicate anymore. we did try to sit down and talk but still it doesn't work. can anyone help me? is it because of different race or it is just us?
The wasps do kill the beetles, so this account is very inaccurate. Author should have had Brodeur look at the piece before it was put online. If that was done, then the inaccuracies are Brodeur's fault.

I completely agree with the above comment, the internet is with a doubt growing into the most important medium of communication across the globe and its due to sites like this that ideas are spreading so quickly.
