One in 50 teenagers still wet the bed

One in 50 teenagers still wet the bed and almost half of 19 year-olds who have the problem are wetting the bed every night, according to research published in the May issue of the urology journal BJUI International.

Professor Chung K Yeung from the Chinese University of Hong Kong teamed up with colleagues from the Prince of Wales Hospital to analyse the results of more than 16,500 questionnaires surveying children aged from five to 19.

He hopes that his findings will reassure parents of children with mild bed wetting problems, but stress the importance of seeking advice in severe cases, which can often be caused by underlying medical problems and continue into adulthood.

512 children - just over three per cent of those surveyed - reported night-time bedwetting and one in five of those also had daytime incontinence. 302 were boys and 210 were girls.

The researchers found that although bed wetting was less common as children got older, the percentage reporting severe problems increased with age.

Children and adolescents who wet the bed at night also showed a similar pattern when it came to daytime incontinence, with a higher percentage of problems reported in older age groups.

When the researchers looked in detail at the 512 children with bed wetting problems they found that:

* Mild bed wetting was much worse among younger children, with 58 per cent of five to ten year-olds and 18 per cent of 11-19 year-olds wetting the bed less than three times a week.

* But older children reported a higher level of severe problems, with 82 per cent of 11-19 year-olds wetting the bed more than three times a week, compared with 42 per cent of five to ten year-olds.

* Just over 16 per cent of five year-olds wet the bed, with boys (21 per cent) having almost twice as many problems as girls (11 per cent).

* By the age of 19, three per cent of boys and two per cent of girls were still wetting the bed.

* Just under a third of 11-19 year-old boys (32 per cent) also experienced daytime incontinence, almost double the 15 per cent recorded in the under ten age group.

* The figures for girls were lower but showed a similar trend, at 25.5 per cent for 11-19 year-olds and 12 per cent for girls under ten.

* Overall, 29 per cent of children aged 11-19 experienced daytime incontinence, compared with 14 cent of under tens.

"Bed wetting showed a general reduction as children got older" says Professor Yeung, who is also President of the International Children's Continence Society. "However, this reduction was much greater in those with mild symptoms who wet the bed three or less times a week, compared to those with severe problems who were wetting the bed every night.

"Just over 14 per cent of five year-olds who wet the bed did so seven nights a week. By the age of 19, severe bed wetting accounted for over 48 per cent of teenagers who were still wetting the bed."

21,000 questionnaires were distributed to 67 schools, with a greater emphasis on children over ten, and just under 79 per cent were returned by parents and children.

The average age of respondents was just under 14 and the largest number of responses were from teenagers aged 16-18. 24 per cent of the questionnaires concerned children under ten.

"Our findings challenge the myth that bedwetting will always get better and disappear as the child gets older" says Professor Yeung.

"In 2004 we published findings of a previous study in BJU International that showed that adults showed no significant decrease in bed wetting problems from the age of 10 to 40.

"These latest findings underline the importance of seeking help for children with severe bed wetting problems, especially if they continue into adolescence. If these individuals are left untreated, the evidence suggests that they will continue to experience ongoing problems when they become adults."

I can definitely relate to the frustration a lot of you are expressing! I'm a little beyond my teen years now (early 30s) but have dealt with this problem for pretty much my whole life. Thankfully at least for me it has gotten gradually less and less over the years (especially since I finished college and all the stress and sleep deprivation that go with it!) but it still happens. There are no easy answers for it, but there are certain things I've found to be of some help (though not perfect) and I still hold out hope of maybe one day beating this thing.

Anyway, I'm not selling anything and I don't have the "miracle cure", but I'm happy to talk to anyone who is interested as one who has "been there, done that"! You're welcome to e-mail or IM me at midnightflyer77@yahoo.com . Thanks, I hope I can be of some help to some of you!

I am 15 years old and I used to wet the bed every night. I used to have to wear Goodnites and other diapers every night. My friend found out when I was about 10 and used to make fun of me at times because of it. But in October 2007, our family's house burnt down and sort of hit me hard and of course I was sad. But after a few days I realized that I stopped wetting the bed. The house fire destroyed slot of things but it actually stopped my horrible problem. I hope that you guys could somehow just stop all of a sudden like me, without having a disaster happen to you.

Hi all, I am glad i have stumbled across this website so i can talk to other people who are in the same boat as mine. So I am a 22 year old female who has been wetting the bed forever. I had surgery when I was 6 to stretch my bladder. Also I have been on every medication you could imagine. I found it really hard for me to attend camp, sleep overs without having an accident. I got made fun of in public school and on into high school. Most days it seems like there is never going to be an end to it. at the age of 16 i wanted to commit suicide because i believed that no guy will ever want to date a girl that wets the bed. Still to this day I think about dying. I really hope i can help others like me out there. I really just want to live my life and not have to worry about the sleeping arrangements. Its sucks. I also have a kidney that doesnt work correctly, it blockes pee from going through my kidney and it causes me pain and discomfort. the doctors wont do anything about it unless i start to have infections. My father wet the bed until he was 12 and then it just stopped. I dont know why mine hasnt stopped. I have had many very uncomfortable proceedures that did wore then good so i know what its like. So here are some suggestions that may or maynot help but you can always try and pass other suggestions around.

Try:

No pop or caffinated beverages* if something bothers your bladder and makes you use the bathroom more then you should avoid it to see what happeneds*
no tea or iced tea
only have juice or water
medication for over active bladder before bed.
If things are bothering you write them down
Less bedding and more coolness. If you are more award of being cold then you can try to get up and use the bathroom.

Also:

Don't let parents get to you by yelling at you or punishing you for having an accident. Its not your fault and by then not supporting you will only make things worse.
If you feel uncomfortable wearing something dont. just make sure you empty your bladder right before bed.
Goodnight work well for overnight stays. they can be embarrassing but they give you the feeling that you didnt wet the bed. but i wouldnt get the in the habbit of wearing them cause your body will get used to them.

Okay everybody I hoped this helped. Email me if you would like to talk canadiangirl16_2007@hotmail.com

I was one of the 1 in 50 until I was 15. I was embarrassed about it, which is normal emotion. But you are not alone. Now days there are allot better solutions to cope with it until it is out grown. There is the internet to talk to others about it. There is more people that are knowledgeable about it. You can talk to a doctor and find out what your situation is. There is also better diapers to wear. Unfortunately, and anyone around my age knows, that not that long ago you had to wear the regular baby diapers. I had to wear Pampers. It was just as embarrassing having the big box of Pampers, diaper pail and Butt Balm in my room as it was getting put into a diaper every night. Now they have ones that are almost like underwear. As for what to do when you want or have to spend the night somewhere other then at home, you have to talk to someone about your situation as embarrassing as it might be. Don't try to see if you can go the one night without wetting. It does not work. I went to camp with a boy that tried that and he wet the first night. I noticed what had happened, and being in that situation before myself, I told him I was going to do my laundry and go use the shower room before it got too busy and asked if he was going to come with. Needless to say he did not hesitate. But I told him he needed to tell a consular for the rest of the stay. He did, got diapers, no one else ever knew, and he had allot better rest of the time. Do what you have to do to keep yourself sane about your situation. Take it from me, there is help, and if you are like me it will be over someday and you will be out of diapers.

Hi, i feel your frustration.
i moved out into a uni flat....it wasnt an issue at 1st but then as i got more comfortable...the bedwetting started up again. i dont get it!
it doesnt really happen when i stay over at mates or my boyfriend...except for this one time and i was absolutely mortified but he was really cool about it. its like when im in a new environment or bed im fine...but as soon as im comfortable, i let go.

Im 20 and still wetting the bed. my parents dont know what to do anymore. the only way i try to help myself is to have one of those old fashion alarm clocks with no snooze button. place it on the other side of the room so when it goes off...you have to get up to switch it off and because your up, you might aswell go relieve yourself.
try that with the usual combination of avoiding late night conversations that make you too tired, staying up too late making you tired also and no liquids after 7.30pm (depends on what time you usually go to bed)

I also ordered on of those incontinence underlay bedsheets to protect my mattress of a website. they're really good. they trap all liquids so it wont soak your mattress. traps the smell as well.

hope that helps

I just checked this site out to see what others are saying...sounds like people feel 'limited' by this - and you are giving yourself a pretty serious 'deadline' - if you don't have this thing over and done with by the tim you're 21!! WOW - there is really so much more to life! don't mean to lecture but, seriously, it's not a solution. So you may not work out in the military...there's a million other things you CAN do! think about it!!!

wear the diaper and plastic pants.no one will know you have them on and it gives you a secure feeling knowing you are protected against accidents.i was a junior bride when i was 15 and wore a thick cloth diaper with cute plastic pants over it under my dress.i got nervous and had an accident and the diaper saved the day for me.i then wore the diaper and plastic pants under my white confirmation dress a year later, but did not have an accident.
