Falling public support for health-care reform can be turned around

Survey results published this week in the journal Health Affairs show that while only 27 percent of adults currently support the U.S. Senate Finance Committee's proposed healthcare legislation, an amended bill could gain the majority's favor.

More individuals gave more money to candidates for federal office, national and state party committees, and political action committees or other interest groups in 2007-08 than in any previous election. The surge in numbers of individuals contributing rose substantially from 2004 to 2008.

Scientists aboard the U.S. research vessel Laurence M Gould, 10,000 miles from Washington off Antarctica, held their own presidential inaugural celebration on Jan. 20. Stopped in desolate, icy seas for three days to do climate-change research, they dubbed their temporary study area Ocean Station Obama.
