New approach to treating cystic fibrosis lung infection shows promise

Researchers have found a new method of fighting severe lung infections in people with cystic fibrosis (CF). These findings are published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Science USA, this week.

Immigrant Sun: Our star could be far from where it started in Milky Way

A long-standing scientific belief holds that stars tend to hang out in the same general part of a galaxy where they originally formed. Some astrophysicists have recently questioned whether that is true, and now new simulations show that, at least in galaxies similar to our own Milky Way, stars such as the sun can migrate great distances.

Size limit for black holes

There appears to be an upper limit to how big the universe’s most massive black holes can get, according to new research led by a Yale University astrophysicist.

Meaning to life would be simple…

It is a chase, after creating this artifical universe in our universe. We have a chance to recreate the big bang our self’s and watch it in front of ours eyes.

'Naked-eye' gamma-ray burst was aimed squarely at Earth

Data from satellites and observatories around the globe show a jet from a powerful stellar explosion witnessed March 19 was aimed almost directly at Earth.

Cassini Images Ring Arcs Among Saturn's Moons

NASA's Cassini spacecraft has detected a faint, partial ring orbiting with one small moon of Saturn, and has confirmed the presence of another partial ring orbiting with a second moon. This is further evidence that most of the planet's small, inner moons orbit within partial or complete rings.

Closest Look Ever at the Edge of a Black Hole

Astronomers have taken the closest look ever at the giant black hole in the center of the Milky Way. By combining telescopes in Hawaii, Arizona, and California, they detected structure at a tiny angular scale of 37 micro-arcseconds - the equivalent of a baseball seen on the surface of the moon, 240,000 miles distant. These observations are among the highest resolution ever done in astronomy.

The Universal theory of Waves. (The law of Existence and Development of Essence)

What is the principal property of the matter?
What is the key property of the matter?
What is the key property of the ideal substance?

A Conversation with Planetary Astronomer Heidi Hammel

With the "Mommy Wars" once again erupting around Sarah Palin's nomination for V.P., a piece of valuable insight arises in the scientific realm. Planetary astronomer Heidi Hammel has managed to do world-class science requiring frequent travel while sharing the parenting of three children, ages 7, 9, and 11, with her equally busy husband. For insight into Heidi's work and how she balances her life, read "A Conversation with Heidi B. Hammel" in the Sept. 2, 2008, issue of the New York Times.

Origin of cosmic dust identified

The origin of the microscopic meteorites that make up cosmic dust has been revealed for the first time in new research out today.

Russian Rocket Engine – Best in the World

September 1, 2008 by russianscience

United States consider Russian rocket engine RD-180 to be the best rocket engine on the world, claim RosCosmos officials.

RD-180 is a two-chamber variant of four-chamber kerosene engine RD-170. The engine owes better specific characteristics, than American analogues have, to closed circuit with reburning of exhaust generator gas in main combustion chambers.

Particle, Particle in Space, Tell Me About Earthquakes

August 30, 2008 by russianscience

The crew of the International space station finishes preparations for “Vsplesk” (“Burst”) experiment, results of which are expected to help in developing methods for real-time forecasting of earthquakes.

Modern Cosmology

I have been thinking a new way of unfolding the mysteries of our cosmos! There are these jargons- dark energy, dark matter, visible matter, entanglement, speed of light, black holes, inflation, big bang, gravity, strong weak and electromagnetic forces, voids of space, spacetime etc etc... How do we combine all these into a coherent whole?

Collision of galaxy clusters captured by astronomers

Two UC Santa Barbara astronomers are part of a team that has made a stunning discovery using the Hubble Space Telescope and Chandra X-ray Observatory, it was announced today by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

Mars Rover climbing out of crater

NASA's Mars Exploration rover Opportunity is heading back out to the Red Planet's surrounding plains nearly a year after descending into a large Martian crater to examine exposed ancient rock layers.

About us

Science Blog was started in August 2002. It lives, breathes and eats press releases from research organizations around the globe. Most of what you read here are press releases from the outfits named in the stories themselves. Got a news story you think belongs here? Let's talk. The other half of the equation is blog posts from readers like you. So if you have an interest in science, please register and join others like you in an ongoing, vibrant dialog about what makes the world tick.
