Help the third world – Maximum impact, minimum outlay.

There is no shortage of persons of good will in the rich world. There are millions and millions of cheap and practical tips that could help people of humble means in the third world. There are millions of practical people who could implement your tips in the third world. All we have to do is to make them aware of them.

Fact: Monetary help rarely reaches the needy, and even if it did, the costs of transport and organization are prohibitive.

Fact: The world has really shrunk. People in Tumbuktu can, if they choose, watch live the inauguration of Sarkozi or the currently showing football match in Saudi Arabia.

Fact: These same people ignore the rudiments of hygiene and children are dying in the hundreds of thousands from this lack of awareness.

The list can go on and on ad infinitum.

The proposal is this: Create a satellite TV station (WITHOUT ADVERTISEMENT) dedicated entirely to broadcasting short, helpful and practical tips aimed at improving the lives of people in the third world.

These tips must be responsible. For example you cannot give persons a way to draw water out of the ground and cause widespread drought elsewhere, but you can teach them an effective, cheap and clean way to desalinate ocean water. This poor example is used to illustrate the need of a responsible technical committee to overview the tips before airing them so as not to cause more problems than solutions. The tips must be environmentally sound tips (as far as we can tell at the present state of knowledge).

Any comments on the above? The need for such an effort of increased awareness seems evident! Or perhaps someone has already done this? Why not make the UN responsible for this? If they are making the effort, why haven’t we heard about them?
