Quantum dot ? all optical transistor switches at speeds up to 1 picosecond ? thousands of times faster than current generation optical switching

Evident Technologies, Inc. announced today that it has been issued United States Patent Number 6,571,028 for an all optical switch or optical transistor. The optical transistor is based upon a saturable absorber or switch using the company?s EviDots semiconductor nanocrystal quantum dot technologies. These technologies are the basis for new generations of all optical communications switching and optical computing. The Evident optical transistor is inherently more compact than current technology, operates at low power, and uses light to switch light. Additionally, the optical transistor operates orders of magnitude faster than current optical switches, enabling the processing of optical data streams for applications such as internet packet routing, cable TV switching or optical data processing.

Evident Technologies by inventing a simple optical switch using EviDots, forms the basis for more complex optical logic and computing circuits. In turn, the optical logic circuits can be used for higher-level communication protocols including optical time domain multiplexing and optical packet switching that is unattainable with current technologies. Based upon the simple design and operation of the optical transistor, higher level logical devices such as optical Read-Only Memories (ROMs), Programmable Read-only Memories (PROMs), and synchronous circuits such as adding circuits, flip-flops, counter and registers, can be readily design and constructed. These devices can be fabricated using current generation thin film processing techniques. The fabrication and small device size allows for many devices to be integrated onto single substrate and connected together leading to all-optical integrated computing circuits.

Dr. Clinton Ballinger, CEO of Evident Technologies, stated: ?The building of an all optical computer, whether for computing or telecommunications, has been hampered by not having a low-cost, easy to integrate component. We believe that the Evident optical transistor is the first practical and fundamental building block for all optical computing. Just as transistors in the 1950s lead to a variety of electronic devices, we believe that we have fundamental technologies that can lead to whole ranges of new devices from switching data on the Internet, to new forms of computing, or a host of other applications. We look forward to working with our partners to bring this technology to market.?

Michael LoCascio, CTO of Evident Technologies, stated: ?By making quantum dots commercially available, we have brought a high quality optical non-linear material to market. This is a further step in bringing nanotechnology toward commercial products that have immediate benefits to a number of optical and optical electronic devices. We make EviDots that can easily be incorporated into glasses and polymers that can readily be formed into planar light wave circuits or other optical components, using standard micro-chip manufacturing processes. All optical switching removes numerous complications arising from optical to electronic conversion of current generation routing devices. Evident, by inventing a fundamental technology, will simplify the coming generations of routing or even enabling optical computing.?
