Meshing Perfectly: Heat Treaters, Gear Experts to Focus on ‘Winds of Change’

Two of industry’s most fundamental technologies – both critical to meeting future technological challenges in the development of alternative energy – will provide double the opportunity for researchers and engineers to learn and network in Indianapolis.

ASM International’s 2009 Heat Treating Society Conference and Exposition will be held Sept. 14-17 at the Indiana Convention Center, and will be co-located with the annual Gear Expo of the American Gear Manufacturers Association (AGMA).

Under the theme “Gear Up for the Winds of Change,” the two events will bring together a complementary set of technical session and exhibitors to serve the heat treating and gear industries.

Because ASM Heat Treating and Gear Expo each regularly attract more than 3,000 qualified attendees, “we expect our combined attendance to provide unprecedented learning opportunities for leaders, innovators, suppliers and customers of both communities,” said Rick Sisson of Worcester Polytechnic Institute, president of the ASM Heat Treating Society.

Whatever is being made, heat treating plays a fundamental and critical step in the manufacturing process. Nowhere is heat treating more critical than in wind power, an important part of the overall energy solution being promoted to help the U.S. achieve energy independence.

“A tremendous volume of advanced manufacturing is needed to support wind power generation,” said Stephen Kowalski, an ASM Heat Treating Society Board member and president of Kowalski Heat Treating, Cleveland. “Those parts spinning 300 feet in the air need to be heat treated. For example, the manufacturing of gearing and power transmissions require heat treating that is not only high quality but energy efficient, affordable and environmentally responsible.”

Technical topics include applied energy, atmosphere technology, brazing, emerging heat treating technologies, quenching and cooling, vacuum technology, and equipment innovations, as well as a range of global and environmental issues, processes, and applications. Leading manufacturers will demonstrate new furnaces and related equipment on the accompanying Exposition floor.
