Embryonic Stem Cell Research Debate

Embryonic Stem Cell research has sparked a heated debate on ethics. Pro embryonic stem cell research people believe that stem cell research can lead to many advancements in human health such as cure to cancer and injuries that seem permanent. On the other hand Anti Embryonic stem cell research people believe that it is unethical and researchers should find another method of researching embryonic stem cells. Both sides have great counter arguments but to me one side over powers the other. That side to me is pro embryonic stem cell research. My view point is that I’m pro embryonic stem cell research because I believe it can possibly benefit us all as human and that it’s not unethical.

What makes these embryonic stem cells so controversial? It’s where they come from. Embryonic stem cells come from a female embryo. Embryos are usually donated from abortions clinics to research labs. So what’s so bad about it? Anti embryonic stem cell research people believe that by aborting the embryo and giving it to science it is then turned into murder. But let’s look at the facts. Aborted embryos come from abortion clinics, right? So then what do they do if there not sent to research labs? They end up getting destroyed over time. So why not take these aborted embryos and put them to use? It’s taking a negative and turning it into a positive for the sake of mankind. But are researchers really killing a human being? Embryos have the potential to be a human being but they are not. Many believe that human becomes an “official” human when a heartbeat develops but the embryo is to young when researchers begin there research. So what are the other methods? Adult stem research is another method but how does it compare to embryonic stem cell research? Not to good. Adult stem cells are found throughout the body unlike embryonic stem cells which are found in the embryo. Embryonic stem cells are pluripotent which gives them the ability to become almost any cell in the body which makes them so valuable for research. On the other hand adult stem cells are limited to what they can do based on their origin. Adult stem cells are hard to grow in large numbers and don’t expand in cultures where as embryonic stem cells grow easily and expand into large numbers of cultures. Embryonic stem cells just out weigh any of adult stem cells benefits. So that leaves no other alternative. Embryonic stem cells research is not to harm a human being. It’s happening to benefit us as human and going against benefits for humans to me is unethical.

The pros for embryonic stem cell research overrule the cons. There are too many possibilities in this research for us not to explore. This debate will go on for a long time until we can all come together and decide what’s truly best for us. But some anti embryonic stem cell research activists do make one point that stands out: what if nothing good comes out of the research and we waste lives for it? But on the other hand how do we know the potential if we don’t try. What if we do have the chance to find the cure for cancer or have the possibility of a handicap person walking again? Wouldn’t you want to know? But here is a real question I pose to the readers: What if you or your loved one is diagnosed with a seemingly incurable disease? Wouldn’t you want to do anything to try and find a cure? How would you view embryonic stem cell research then?

  1. Most current embryonic cells for research are obtained from fertility clinics where they are “left-over” from in vitro fertilization, not abortion clinics. These embryos are going either into a lab for potentially life-saving research, or into a waste bin for disposal as medical waste.

The ethical choice couldn’t be more clear.
