{"id":39,"date":"2017-03-06T18:07:44","date_gmt":"2017-03-06T18:07:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dereklee.peachpuff-wolverine-566518.hostingersite.com\/?p=39"},"modified":"2017-03-06T18:07:44","modified_gmt":"2017-03-06T18:07:44","slug":"how-many-species-of-giraffe-are-there","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/scienceblog.com\/dereklee\/39\/how-many-species-of-giraffe-are-there\/","title":{"rendered":"How many species of Giraffe are there?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Some people might be confused by the media announcing that there are &#8220;now&#8221; four species of giraffes, followed shortly thereafter by the IUCN press release that there is one species of giraffe (with nine subspecies) now considered to be Vulnerable to Extinction on the Red List.\u00a0 The IUCN currently recognizes one species of giraffe with 9 subspecies.<\/p>\n<p>The attached articles from the scientific journal, <em>Current Biology<\/em> should help to clarify the situation.\u00a0 The first article challenges the four species claim, noting that there are one, two, four, at least six, or eight species, depending upon the reference consulted.\u00a0 The second article is the invited response by the original co-authors of the 4-species plan.<\/p>\n<p>The differences in giraffe taxonomy schemes are based upon different definitions of species, different sets of data, different statistical analyses, and different interpretations of the findings.\u00a0 Hence, the four species conclusion is simply one possible way to partition giraffe biological relationships.<\/p>\n<p>Most notably, the last sentence of the response states that their analyses &#8220;create a basis for future taxonomy discussions and conservation efforts.&#8221;\u00a0 Those taxonomic discussions are a priority for the world\u2019s giraffe experts, as decided at the IUCN Antelope, Giraffe, Hippo Conference recently held in Prague.<\/p>\n<p>So, expect the taxonomy of giraffes to remain open to various interpretations, while the one-species plan remains in place at the IUCN, until the world\u2019s giraffe experts reach a consensus.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wildnatureinstitute.org\/uploads\/5\/5\/7\/7\/5577192\/bercovitch_et_al_giraffe_taxonomy_current_biology.pdf\">F.B. This work examines how births, deaths, and movements of ungulates are impacted by increasingly fragmented wildlife habitat, and what conservation actions are most effective. He spent 10 years researching the impacts of climate and ocean conditions on survival, reproduction, and population growth rates of marine predators such as northern elephant seals, Common Murres, and Cassin's Auklets at the South Farallon Islands, California. His work was included in a conservation and management plan for seabirds in the California Current.
