\nJanet\u2019s Planet Founder Receives Gracie Allen Award for New Program Produced with Space Florida
\nJanet Ivey marks 10th anniversary of Janet\u2019s Planet with national award for \u201cExploring Microgravity\u201d DVD; also garners two MidSouth Emmy Awards<\/strong><\/p>\n

Nashville, Tenn., April 20, 2010 \u2013 Janet\u2019s Planet, an innovative children\u2019s educational television series airing on many public television stations nationwide, today announced that its founder and host Janet Ivey has won the esteemed Gracie Allen Award for \u201cExploring Microgravity,\u201d the new DVD she produced with Space Florida. Ivey also recently won two MidSouth Emmy Awards for \u201cExploring Microgravity\u201d and \u201cJanet\u2019s Planet Health Interstitials\u201d from the MidSouth Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Science.<\/p>\n

The Gracie Allen Awards are presented by the Foundation of American Women in Radio and Television to recognize exemplary programming created for, by and about women. Ivey was recognized with the Gracie Allen Award for Outstanding Children\/Adolescent Non-Animated Program at the 35th Annual Gracies Gala at the Beverly Hills Hilton on May 25.<\/p>\n

Ivey\u2019s multiple awards come as Janet\u2019s Planet celebrates its 10th year on public television.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are all so proud of the work that Janet Ivey has done over the years to foster children\u2019s love of science, space and the greater world,\u201d said Beth Curley, President and CEO of Nashville Public Television, the station where Janet\u2019s Planet was developed and first produced. \u201cIt is completely fitting that, as she marks her 10th year on the air, Janet is being honored nationally for her work. The \u2018Exploring Microgravity\u2019 DVD is yet another example of the superior work she is doing on behalf of our nation\u2019s children every day.\u201d<\/p>\n

Janet\u2019s Planet is a unique science education program geared for six to 10-year-olds. Created by Ivey in 2000 in partnership with NPT, the series features 13 fast-paced and dynamic segments that explore a range of scientific and historic themes. These one-to-two minute short episodes currently air on more than 144 public television stations nationwide.<\/p>\n

Ivey created \u201cExploring Microgravity\u201d in partnership with Space Florida. The 35-minute DVD features Ivey as she boards an air flight at zero gravity and explains the phenomena and effects for elementary and middle school-aged audiences. The program has been adopted by the Florida Department of Education which has made it available to schools across the state to promote Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) education.
