She expresses beautifully and forcefully the idea I try, however awkwardly, to trace in <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.com\/0300169914\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Science of Human Perfection<\/em><\/a> and, often more humorously, here on Genotopia. She discusses how eugenics has always had a strand of preventive medicine, and how that strand runs continuously down to today&#8217;s genetic medicine. And that doesn&#8217;t make modern genetics evil. However, we have to be honest about what it is we&#8217;re up to. E.g.:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">&#8220;Preventive [genetic] medicine is eugenics. Now, I&#8217;m not going to say I&#8217;m totally against eugenics. I just think we need to say what we&#8217;re doing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Rose is often a fairly radical critic, but this strikes me as a balanced and fair reading. I am ordering the new book <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.com\/1844678814\" target=\"_blank\">Genes, Cells, and Brains,<\/a> by Hilary Rose and Steven Rose. I expect to post more on it.<\/p>\n<p>How good it would be to see some momentum gather for an honest, non-polemical critique of genetic biomedicine, one in which the aim was not to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=tcx9BJRadfw\" target=\"_blank\">strap ourselves to the gears and wheels and levers of the machine<\/a>* but rather to steer it in a positive direction\u2014one that maximally benefits those it is meant to serve.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>*paraphrase of a favorite quote from my hometown history<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Just saw this clip of an interview with the inveterate science critic Hilary Rose with The Guardian.
