{"id":1768,"date":"2021-06-25T11:17:58","date_gmt":"2021-06-25T11:17:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/horizon.peachpuff-wolverine-566518.hostingersite.com\/?p=1768"},"modified":"2021-06-25T11:17:58","modified_gmt":"2021-06-25T11:17:58","slug":"cities-that-connect-people-and-nature-are-a-post-pandemic-priority-conference-hears","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/scienceblog.com\/horizon\/1768\/cities-that-connect-people-and-nature-are-a-post-pandemic-priority-conference-hears\/","title":{"rendered":"Cities that connect people and nature are a post-pandemic priority, conference hears"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"field field-name-field-header field-type-text-long field-label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item even\">\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\"><strong>Care homes that let people age with integrity, green kindergartens and community centres that bring together people of all ages were some of the visions for how to build a better Europe presented by citizens from Estonia, Bulgaria and Poland on 24 June at the European Commission\u2019s annual flagship research conference.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item even\">\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">Speakers at a panel at the two-day\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/research-and-innovation\/en\/events\/upcoming-events\/research-innovation-days\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Research and Innovation Days<\/a>\u00a0event presented proposals for new urban design projects that emphasise wellbeing, mental health and strengthening social ties across generations in the recovery period following the Covid-19 pandemic. The ideas prioritised reconnecting with people and nature.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">Social reconnection after the pandemic is an urgent priority, according to panellist Liis Liivand, 19, who lives in the Estonian capital, Tallinn.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">\u2018I think that during the pandemic we all felt what loneliness and lack of human connection can feel like. We all felt that humans indeed are social creatures,\u2019 she said. \u2018And in the pandemic we found new ways to bring people together using technology and I think now it\u2019s time to bring people back together in real life.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">The ideas Liivand presented emerged from a day-long Zoom workshop in June with about 30 other people from all over Estonia to discuss ideas linking urban planning, aesthetics and sustainably to the Covid-19 recovery. She told the conference audience that a community centre to combat loneliness through activities such as gatherings, crafts and games, as well as better care homes \u2013 where many\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.err.ee\/1608109837\/care-home-and-healthcare-institution-outbreaks-total-over-1-500-people\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">outbreaks occurred<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 are crucial in her country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">\u2018Community centres are very much needed after isolating for so long and not being able to see friends and even family. We need places and events that will bring people back together. That would definitely speed up the recovery,\u2019 said Liivand, a student in psychology at the University of Tartu.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\"><strong>Ageing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">Participants in her workshop also saw better care homes as a priority. \u2018Ageing with integrity is very important,\u2019 she said. \u2018Improved care homes would be a place where elderly want to go instead of where they fear to go. A good care home would be accessible to all inhabitants. It would be located in a green area and there would be a community garden which would keep the inhabitants meaningfully engaged.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">Such homes would integrate technological solutions such as voice commands to make life easier. \u2018People like to forget that we all grow old and sooner or later may need assistance in our daily lives. If we take care of the older generation right now then we can hope that the next generation will take care of us. It should be a development made by the government but we can all help.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">Dimitar Shingarski, who works for a logistics company, was part of a Bulgarian workshop that came up with a proposal to overcome the lack of space in kindergartens and schools by making use of factories and buildings abandoned after the fall of communism. With surrounding green spaces, these could be used to make more beautiful learning environments for children, according to Shingarski.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">\u2018It is where the kids grow up. Whatever they see and experience every day, it has an impact on how they grow up, on their understanding of the world,\u2019 he told the conference. Greener spaces would also allow children to be more connected with nature.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">The pandemic, said Shingarski, also demonstrated the value of outdoors and the need for moving away from packed urban spaces to smaller towns or the city outskirts with cleaner air and greener spaces to improve wellbeing. \u2018We cannot continue to live like packets of meat crowded in dirty and big cities,\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u2018We need places and events that will bring people back together. That would definitely speed up the recovery.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Liis Liivand, psychology student, Estonia<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\"><strong>New European Bauhaus<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">The workshops from which the ideas emerged are part of the wider\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/europa.eu\/new-european-bauhaus\/index_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New European Bauhaus<\/a>, a participatory initiative aimed at working with citizens across Europe to shape a better future after the pandemic \u2013 and part of a wider plan of building back better. European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen introduced the initiative in her\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/SPEECH_20_1655\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">State of the Union<\/a>\u00a0address in September 2020.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">\u2018The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/speech_21_1881\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ambition<\/a>\u00a0of the New European Bauhaus is to empower the creation of beautiful, inclusive and sustainable cities (and) forms of living,\u2019 said Xavier Troussard, head of the initiative, speaking at the R&amp;I Days panel. \u2018And therefore it&#8217;s a way to inspire and to concretise the big transformations that are going through Europe and the world. The green transformation; the digital transformation.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">Citizens must be at the core of this project, he said. \u2018That&#8217;s why we didn&#8217;t start this initiative with the traditional Commission (policy) paper. But we started with an invitation to have a conversation.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/research-and-innovation\/en\/events\/upcoming-events\/research-innovation-days\/speakers\/michela-magas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Michela Magas<\/a>, founder of global innovation community MTF Labs, is a member of the New European Bauhaus\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/europa.eu\/new-european-bauhaus\/about\/high-level-roundtable_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">roundtable<\/a>\u00a0of advisors consisting of high profile thinkers, scientists, architects and other practitioners, such as artist Olafur Eliasson and climate scientist\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/horizon-magazine.eu\/article\/i-would-people-panic-top-scientist-unveils-equation-showing-world-climate-emergency.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Professor Hans Joachim Schellnhuber<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">She says the initiative aims to support a bottom-up approach.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">\u2018This is another thing that we are really encouraging with the New European Bauhaus \u2026 great ideas that come from the grassroots and also implementation that is initiated from the grassroots,\u2019 said Magas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">The initiative has been collecting ideas from October 2020 and from September 2021 at least five\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/europa.eu\/new-european-bauhaus\/about\/about-initiative_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pilot projects<\/a>\u00a0will be set up, for which President von der Leyen has promised \u20ac25m in seed funding.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">What happens now and how these ideas become reality are key questions for Liivand, who would like to be involved in the implementation of both the ideas she presented. Those who will benefit should be involved, she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">\u2018Usually the EU has this top-down approach and I think they often get criticised for that \u2013 that they don\u2019t really talk to the people that need these things. I think that this (the New European Bauhaus) is a new and cool approach but many of these proposals need to come from the local government, so I don\u2019t know how they can implement these ideas from the EU level,\u2019 said Liivand speaking after the session.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">In response, Troussard says that working with local actors will be critical.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">\u2018The challenge is to build a community which connects, support and empowers the actors of the transformation at local level \u2013 be they local authorities (or) grassroots organisations of citizen initiatives at neighbourhood level,\u2019 he told Horizon. \u2018Next to calling for some emblematic projects, the Commission will put in place different stands of capacity building for local authorities to nurture transformative and regenerative projects in close collaboration with citizens.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><em>Originally published on <a href=\"https:\/\/horizon-magazine.eu\/\">Horizon Magazine<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Care homes that let people age with integrity, green kindergartens and community centres that bring together people of all ages were some of the visions for how to build a better Europe presented by citizens from Estonia, Bulgaria and Poland on 24 June at the European Commission\u2019s annual flagship research conference.
