So as the year winds down, we\u2019re taking a look back, putting the spotlight on many of the year\u2019s top science stories. If you have a favourite from one of these stories, let us know by replying <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HorizonMagEU?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>LOOKING UP<\/strong>, scientists gazing into the universe used mega telescopes and other sophisticated instruments to come up with quick ways to <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/research-and-innovation\/en\/horizon-magazine\/how-do-we-know-if-asteroid-headed-our-way-dangerous\">model, track and categorise how dangerous a Near Earth Object (or NEO) is<\/a> &#8211; such as an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.neorocks.eu\/\">asteroid or comet.<\/a> This would allow them to call it early, even days before a possible collision with Earth.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/research-and-innovation\/sites\/default\/files\/hm\/IMCEUpload\/chelyabinsk_meteor_trace.jpg\" alt=\"It is not uncommon for asteroids to hit Earth. Image credit &#8211; Alex Alishevskikh, licensed under CC BY-SA 2.0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>But what could they do if they had more info and more time?<\/p>\n<p>2021 was in fact the launch year of an <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/research-and-innovation\/en\/horizon-magazine\/qa-how-were-gearing-deflect-asteroids-might-cause-earth-considerable-damage\">international effort in testing planetary defence systems<\/a> against potential threats, such as NEOs. Scientists are now working with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European Space Agency (ESA)<\/a> on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Safety_Security\/Hera\/Hera\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hera asteroid mission<\/a>\u2013 a multi-year project that will follow on from NASA\u2019s recently-launched <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/press-release\/nasa-spacex-launch-dart-first-test-mission-to-defend-planet-earth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DART mission<\/a> \u2013 forensically examining and gauging the impact of NASA deliberately ramming its DART spacecraft into an asteroid\u2019s moon in order to throw the main asteroid off its hypothetical earth-collision course. Image credit &#8211; Naomi Murdoch<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>CLOSER TO EARTH<\/strong>, but still gazing upwards, researchers in Europe also came up with <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/research-and-innovation\/en\/horizon-magazine\/bird-robots-could-assist-medical-emergencies-and-hunt-down-drones\">bird-like drones<\/a> that harness the wind and air currents to fly longer distances. They can now better reach dangerous sites to deliver aid in medical emergencies, for example, or take out disruptive drones.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/research-and-innovation\/sites\/default\/files\/hm\/IMCEUpload\/griffin_project.png\" alt=\"The GRIFFIN project is seeking to create prototypes of highly autonomous, ultra-lightweight robot birds. Image credit &#8211; GRVC Robotics Lab<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>BENEATH OUR FEET<\/strong>, scientists sounded the alarm about the state of soils. They developed an app to determine soil health by harnessing remote-sensing technologies &#8211; such as the EU\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.copernicus.eu\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Copernicus<\/a>\u00a0satellite system &#8211; along with several on-site techniques to gather information on our fragile ecosystems.<\/p>\n<p>They also developed tools that can map soil erosion, as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/research-and-innovation\/en\/horizon-magazine\/does-ally-against-climate-change-lie-beneath-our-feet\">carbon sequestration, and guide us towards regenerative agriculture and greater biodiversity to mitigate climate change.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/research-and-innovation\/sites\/default\/files\/hm\/IMCEUpload\/soil-test-shutterstock_1317121700-2.jpg\" alt=\"Soil test: An agronomist takes notes in the field.
