But which ones work best?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div class=\"field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item even\">\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">To help filter the most effective innovations to invest in, a global initiative has developed a new way to estimate their emissions-slashing potential. In the next year, it aims to identify 1,000 solutions with a combined potential to avoid more than 40 gigatons of CO2 emissions or equivalent around the world each year by 2030.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">\u2018They\u2019re not all going to be implemented, but (we want) to show that the solutions are out there, it is possible to reduce emissions by large quantities,\u2019 said Jay Hennessy, project coordinator of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.misolutionframework.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mission Innovation 1.5\u00b0C Compatible Solution Framework<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">More than 53 gigatons of greenhouse gas emissions were produced globally in 2017, according to the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/wedocs.unep.org\/bitstream\/handle\/20.500.11822\/26895\/EGR2018_FullReport_EN.pdf?sequence=1&amp;isAllowed=y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UN Environment Programme (UNEP)<\/a>. By 2030, annual emissions need to be cut by 55% from this number to limit global warming to 1.5\u00b0 Celsius above pre-industrial levels, the UN agency says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">In 2018, energy-related CO2 emissions rose to a historic high of 33.1 gigatons, according to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/geco\/emissions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">International Energy Agency<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">\u2018There isn\u2019t any time to waste and there aren\u2019t any resources to waste, and we have to ensure that the resources we are using are focused in the right places,\u2019 said Hennessy. \u2018We need to be thinking and enabling a much faster change in the solutions that we invest in.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\"><strong>Technological innovation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">Global temperatures have already risen 1\u00b0 Celsius, so \u2018rapid and far-reaching\u2019 transitions in land, energy, industry, buildings, transport and cities are needed, according to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/2018\/10\/08\/summary-for-policymakers-of-ipcc-special-report-on-global-warming-of-1-5c-approved-by-governments\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)<\/a>, which also identified an acceleration in technological innovation as a key enabler of limiting global warming.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">The new assessment framework, which is making its methodology available for public funders, businesses and investors to use, was developed for Mission Innovation, a global initiative of 24 countries and the European Commission working to accelerate clean energy innovation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.misolutionframework.net\/solutions\/mi4\/name\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Scores<\/a> for the 100 innovations assessed so far range from less than 1 megaton in reduced CO2 emissions per year in 2030, to more than 300 megatons.<\/p>\n<div class=\"quote-view quotesBlock quote_horizontal\">\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">&#8216;There isn\u2019t any time to waste and there aren\u2019t any resources to waste, and we have to ensure that the resources we are using are focused in the right places.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">Jay Hennessy, Mission Innovation 1.5\u00b0C Compatible Solution Framework<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">One of the highest scorers is vegan catering company\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gigafood.se\/catering\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gigafood<\/a>, which delivers its food by cargo bike and uses ecologically sustainable packaging materials<strong>.\u00a0<\/strong>Its score of 152 megatons reflects not just the company itself but the potential for a business model for low-emissions eating to be scaled up globally.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">An insect farm run by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/hexafly.co\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hexafly<\/a>, an Irish company,\u00a0is also on the menu. Although it has not yet been assessed by the framework, the company is confident it will do well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">\u2018We can produce 15,000 times more protein per acre (0.4 hectare) than a beef farm, 7,000 times more protein per acre than a chicken farm \u2013 with no emissions,\u2019 said Alvan Hunt, CEO and co-founder of Hexafly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">\u2018It\u2019s a zero-waste facility that can be scaled up and rolled out globally\u2019 and uses very little water, no chemicals, and the insects feed on agricultural and food waste, he adds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">For now, the insects are used to produce organic fertiliser, protein for fish and pet feed, and oil for cosmetics. Hunt hopes to expand into poultry feed, and ultimately food for people, but\u00a0for that to happen\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodnavigator.com\/Article\/2018\/11\/07\/Edible-insects-in-the-EU-the-long-road-to-legalisation\">EU laws<\/a>\u00a0need to change, he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">Achieving a good score in the framework would highlight the benefits of insect farming and could help change legislation as a result, Hunt says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\"><strong>Investment<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">Environmental innovations often need more capital investment than other sectors, says Patrick Sheehan, founder and partner at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/etfpartners.capital\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ETF Partners<\/a>, a UK-based fund which specialises in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/etfpartners.capital\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/ETF-Partners-Investment-Insights-Our-Impact-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sustainable investing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">The weight of venture capital money goes into internet and software companies which can grow rapidly without too much capital expenditure. \u2018Making stuff that physically works is more difficult than making software that doesn\u2019t really have to work all the time,\u2019 said Sheehan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">However, investors can still make just as big a profit and have a positive impact on the environment, he says. \u2018If you fulfill a great need \u2026 then you have a great opportunity for returns for your investments.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">Only companies that grow fast and big can change the climate, says Rene Savelsberg, co-founder, CEO and managing director of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.setventures.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SET Ventures<\/a>, a European venture capital firm specialising in disruptive energy innovations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">\u2018We need clear winners that transform the energy sector as a whole,\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">The sector is changing and, since the 2015 Paris climate deal, \u2018we have passed the tipping point \u2026 the path towards the energy sector becoming a clean sector is definitely working\u2019, Savelsberg said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">But dominant oil, gas and utility companies have to change their business models for innovation to thrive, says Savelsberg.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">Governments have to play an important role in this, for example by imposing an effective tax on CO2 to help shift the industry to CO2-free energy systems, he adds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">Sheehan says governments need to help fund major engineering innovations that could have a large impact on emissions reductions, as private investors cannot commit to very long-term projects. Nuclear fusion, for example, is taking decades to develop.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">Savelsberg and Sheehan \u2013 who have both been in the field for more than a decade \u2013 say they already have their own ways of assessing an innovation\u2019s potential to reduce emissions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">\u2018The uncomfortable reality is you never really know the impact and it\u2019s more important to be directionally correct,\u2019 Sheehan said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">What\u2019s needed is a common language to talk about innovation that is easy for all parties to understand, he adds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">\u2018Innovation is messy and difficult \u2026 and governments tend not to put enough money into it because it\u2019s hard to explain, and because there\u2019s a lot of failure around (it) inevitably. So \u2026 simplicity and clarity are profoundly important,\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\"><strong>Transparent<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">Hennessy said the framework is being created together with those who have already developed methodologies to ensure that the way that avoided emissions are calculated is transparent and can be compared.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">The framework also brings together people with ideas with those seeking solutions, and people with money to invest, \u2018so that we can talk a common language and get the most impactful solutions implemented\u2019, Hennessy said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">He welcomes inputs from people with solutions, or who are supporting solutions, or have ideas on how the framework can be co-developed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">\u2018The method we have is not perfect and it never will be, but \u2026 what we hope to present here is a framework that everyone can use,\u2019 said Hennessy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\"><em>The research in this article was funded by the EU.
