According to the 2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH),\u00a014.5 million (nearly 15 million) people ages 12 and older<\/a>\u00a0met the\u00a0Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders,\u00a0<\/em>Fourth Edition (DSM-IV) criteria for past-year alcohol use disorder (AUD).<\/p>\n

Clearly, the scope of alcohol problems in the U.S. population is large. However, NSDUH data indicate that\u00a0less than 10 percent<\/a>\u00a0of people with past-year AUD receive any treatment. To address this problem, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) has developed\u00a0The Healthcare Professional\u2019s Core Resource on Alcohol<\/em><\/a>, also known as HPCR.<\/p>\n

Studies<\/a>\u00a0have shown that\u00a0people with AUD are more likely to seek care from a primary care provider for an alcohol-related medical problem rather than to directly address their alcohol use problems<\/a>. HPCR contains information about alcohol problems and how primary care providers and other healthcare professionals can help patients who drink too much overcome barriers to treatment.<\/p>\n
