The Missing Link – a monthly podcast on the history of science, medicine and technology – has just released its thirteenth episode at http://missinglinkpodcast.com.
This month’s episode goes on location to Devon, a beautiful, southwestern coastal county in England. We explore the disturbing history of the county asylum there, including the arbitrary system of admission for children in the 19th century. We also spend some time at Devon’s seaside resorts, where the ocean water and air was supposed to restore health – that is, until overcrowding at the beaches unleashed sewage, cholera, and other nasties onto the tourists.
