{"id":181,"date":"2011-09-11T08:00:22","date_gmt":"2011-09-11T08:00:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/poseidonsciences.peachpuff-wolverine-566518.hostingersite.com\/?p=181"},"modified":"2020-06-18T11:30:41","modified_gmt":"2020-06-18T11:30:41","slug":"thoughts-on-that-fateful-september-11th-from-a-man-who-wasn%e2%80%99t-there","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/scienceblog.com\/poseidonsciences\/181\/thoughts-on-that-fateful-september-11th-from-a-man-who-wasn%e2%80%99t-there\/","title":{"rendered":"Thoughts on that fateful September 11th from a man who wasn\u2019t there"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 There is so much going on in science and technology every day, yet I am compelled instead to write about this\u00a0singular event of the decade\u2014September 11<sup>th<\/sup><strong>.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Where were you on 9\/11?<\/strong>\u00a0 This is a most often asked question posed to\u00a0any New Yorker traveling overseas or just going across the State lines.\u00a0 I wish I can say how terrifying that day<br \/>\nwas,.\u00a0 How the acrid smoke and the dust\u00a0filled my lungs.\u00a0 How much anguish it had<br \/>\nbeen to see the Twin Towers disintegrating right before my very own eyes. \u00a0\u00a0I could not say those words.\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t there. \u00a0I was 6,000 miles away, watching the events of<br \/>\nthat fateful day unfold in the safety of a hotel lounge far away from home.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I belong to that minority of New Yorkers\u00a0who were not home on 9\/11.\u00a0 It was about<br \/>\n3 pm in Athens, Greece and I just started giving a lecture at a marine <a href=\"https:\/\/scienceblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2011\/09\/a1-911-Twin_towers-resized.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-190\" src=\"https:\/\/scienceblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2011\/09\/a1-911-Twin_towers-resized-300x186.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"186\" srcset=\"https:\/\/scienceblog.com\/poseidonsciences\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2011\/09\/a1-911-Twin_towers-resized-300x186.jpg 300w, https:\/\/scienceblog.com\/poseidonsciences\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2011\/09\/a1-911-Twin_towers-resized.jpg 483w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>science\u00a0symposium at the University of Piraeus.\u00a0 One of the organizers came to the lecture room and whispered to me as I\u00a0was giving my talk that a plane hit one of the Twin Towers.\u00a0 And I continued on, thinking that it was just\u00a0an accident.\u00a0 Certainly those massive\u00a0Towers can withstand any plane.\u00a0 A similar accident also\u00a0occurred before long ago with a plane hitting the Empire State Building and\u00a0nothing catastrophic happened.\u00a0\u00a0A few\u00a0minutes later, he came back to tell me that a second plane hit the other Tower.\u00a0 By then almost everyone in the conference room were rushing out by the coffee area, watching the events on CNN.\u00a0 I rushed back to the hotel and became glued to the TV, just like the rest of the billions of human beings on that day.<\/p>\n<p>Though I felt less concerned because my family lived miles away in Queenboro, that concern heightened when it was impossible to reach anyone by phone. Because air travel was restricted indefinitely, I ended up by accident in the Greek island of Ydra, spending a week there, mostly drinking wine and watching the Greek sunset along with a dozen fellow stranded Americans.\u00a0 A week later, I got onboard a plane to<br \/>\nSingapore and from there finally to NYC.\u00a0 Hardly an adventure worth recounting when someone asked where I was\u00a0 on 9\/11.<\/p>\n<p>The World Trade Center was memorable to me, not simply as an icon of New York City. I had my wedding luncheon at <em>Windows on the World<\/em>, a restaurant on top of the Towers.\u00a0 I had New Year\u2019s celebrations there many times over the years.\u00a0 I often go for a drink there and have lunch or dinner meetings with colleagues visiting New York<br \/>\nfor the first time.\u00a0 In 2000, I looked at several floors at the Twin Towers for Poseidon Sciences as home office.\u00a0 Only the high expense of the lease and the longer subway ride talked me out of it. The Twin Towers was never pretty, but it exudes power and presence.\u00a0 Not having enough money and being lazy to take a longer subway ride saved me from that disaster just a year later.<\/p>\n<p>Not being home on that unusual day bothered me.\u00a0 For inexplicable reasons, I<br \/>\nnever came close to the ruins when I got home; the closest was 10 blocks away to see if my friend, Eugene, was fine.\u00a0\u00a0 And that was weeks after the event.\u00a0 I can<br \/>\nsense the doom and gloom of downtown Manhattan as soon as I stepped out of the subway station.\u00a0 I can feel the dust settling on my skin.\u00a0 The distinct overpowering smell<br \/>\nthat came from the combination of chemicals from plastics, cement, paper\u2026 and of<br \/>\nhuman bodies still burning underneath the rubble, filled my lungs.\u00a0 \u00a0As a<br \/>\nscientist, curiosity should have drawn me closer, but did not want to.\u00a0 I felt I did not deserve to be there.\u00a0 I did nothing.\u00a0 Perhaps, I felt that pang of guilt for being<br \/>\nso far away then.\u00a0 In fact, I had not gone to see the makeshift memorial after the attacks or even came close to the ruins to this date.<\/p>\n<p>In a study published in JAMA in 2002 entitled \u201cA Nationwide Longitudinal Study of Psychological Responses to September 11&#8243; examined the effects of the World Trade Center attack on the national psyche.\u00a0 In this article, Roxane Cohen Silver, who lead the nationwide study noted:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This research dispels a number of myths \u2026The effects of a major national trauma are not limited to those directly affected by it, and the degree of response cannot be predicted simply by objective measures of exposure to or loss from the trauma. This fact has not been adequately acknowledged by some mental health professionals\u2026.. We believe it is important to recognize that potentially disturbing levels of<br \/>\ntrauma-related symptoms can be present in individuals who are not directly<br \/>\nexposed to a trauma, particularly when it is a massive national tragedy such as<br \/>\nthe 9-11 attacks\u2026.Rather than seeing these symptoms as evidence as psychiatric<br \/>\ndisorders, however, their presence is likely to represent a normal response to<br \/>\nan abnormal event.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>New Yorkers, in general, are very resilient mix of peoples.\u00a0 Perhaps, it is the cultural<br \/>\ndiversity that makes them less immune to major catastrophes even in their own<br \/>\nbackyard.\u00a0 The study in 2004 led by Joseph Boscarino and published in <em>Journal<br \/>\nof General Hospital Psychiatry<\/em> showed that New Yorker\u2019s use of mental health services only rose slightly after the September 11<sup>th<\/sup> terrorist attacks.\u00a0 In fact mental health providers were prepared to provide mental heath services to the thousands of New Yorkers anticipated needing those services, but the expected need never really materialized.\u00a0 Must had been the NY attitude thats hard to fathom at times!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_194\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-194\" style=\"width: 290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/scienceblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2011\/09\/a1-911-Iraq_briefing3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-194\" src=\"https:\/\/scienceblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2011\/09\/a1-911-Iraq_briefing3-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/scienceblog.com\/poseidonsciences\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2011\/09\/a1-911-Iraq_briefing3-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/scienceblog.com\/poseidonsciences\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2011\/09\/a1-911-Iraq_briefing3-450x300.jpg 450w, https:\/\/scienceblog.com\/poseidonsciences\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2011\/09\/a1-911-Iraq_briefing3.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-194\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">CPT Jennifer McIntyre briefing troops before next mission in Iraq<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>What I think happened instead was the overwhelming need to do something.\u00a0 Some\u00a0as big as joining the armed forces to fight overseas or as little as helping those in need, big or small.\u00a0 The disaster galvanized people to do something then as therapeutic journey to solidarity.\u00a0 And, on this 10<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary, those who had done little, like yours truly, have some soul searching to do.\u00a0 I am not sure if many feel the same way.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 As a scientist working on marine science issues seemed out of place here, my work irrelevant in many ways.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_197\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-197\" style=\"width: 290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/scienceblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2011\/09\/a1-911-cigar_Session_in_Iraq1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-197\" src=\"https:\/\/scienceblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2011\/09\/a1-911-cigar_Session_in_Iraq1-300x180.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/scienceblog.com\/poseidonsciences\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2011\/09\/a1-911-cigar_Session_in_Iraq1-300x180.jpg 300w, https:\/\/scienceblog.com\/poseidonsciences\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2011\/09\/a1-911-cigar_Session_in_Iraq1.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-197\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jenny enjoying Nat Sherman cigars I sent for her &#8216;boys.&#8217; Just one of the few pleasures in the desert of Iraq.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This asymmetric warfare, \u00a0a war between a high tech nation and a low tech enemy, has a common thread\u00a0repeated thousands of times in thousands of wars over the millennia&#8211; that young men (and now women too) go to war and young people die.
