{"id":207,"date":"2012-01-30T09:04:30","date_gmt":"2012-01-30T09:04:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/poseidonsciences.peachpuff-wolverine-566518.hostingersite.com\/?p=207"},"modified":"2012-02-01T10:19:59","modified_gmt":"2012-02-01T10:19:59","slug":"searching-for-seagrape-seaweed-in-indian-waters-a-nun-scientist%e2%80%99s-tale-of-passion-and-perseverance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/scienceblog.com\/poseidonsciences\/207\/searching-for-seagrape-seaweed-in-indian-waters-a-nun-scientist%e2%80%99s-tale-of-passion-and-perseverance\/","title":{"rendered":"Searching for seagrape seaweed in Indian waters: a nun-scientist\u2019s tale of passion and perseverance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is not your usual technical article on seaweed biochemistry or biology.\u00a0 This topic is quite different.\u00a0 It is the untold tale of discovery, repeated thousands of times around the world by scientists from all disciplines.\u00a0 It is the chase, the hunt for something new, something useful.\u00a0 Starting with a hunch, proving an idea and fulfilling the passion are all the ingredients that make scientific discovery\u00a0a unique experience. \u00a0And this story is not about me.\u00a0 This story is about Sister Avelin Mary, a Roman Catholic nun, a marine scientist of India and her relentless effort to find seagrapes, a strange, odd-looking seaweed considered by experts as \u2018extinct\u2019 in Indian waters.<\/p>\n<p>For thousands of years, seaweed has been harvested from wild\u00a0beds\u00a0and some cultivated artificially for food, primarily in Asia.\u00a0 It is only in the last century that a\u00a0portion of the world\u2019s seaweed harvest has served as natural resource for ingredients used in cosmetics and other industries.\u00a0 This nonfood use has great potential.\u00a0 Just as an example, a recent paper in <em>Science <\/em>described the use of engineered microbes to convert brown seaweeds (kelp) into biofuels.\u00a0 Seaweeds produce two times more ethanol than sugar cane and five times that from maize given the same area of cultivation. \u00a0\u00a0Given the increasing demand and great interest for new ingredients derived from the marine environment there has been a flurry of research to identify new seaweed resources.\u00a0 However, harvesting from the wild is a problem, partly because the ingredients derived from them may vary from one season to the next.\u00a0 Moreover, companies are wary of using resources from wild harvest since they can be affected by seasonal fluctuations of availability, quality, pollution and\u00a0over-exploitation of sensitive marine habitats.\u00a0 The cosmetic industry, in particular, looks for marine resources that have both a great marketing story and renewable through artificial methods called mariculture.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/scienceblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2012\/01\/Eurocosmetics-Fig-7-Umibudo_SCI.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-215\" src=\"https:\/\/scienceblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2012\/01\/Eurocosmetics-Fig-7-Umibudo_SCI-300x245.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"245\" srcset=\"https:\/\/scienceblog.com\/poseidonsciences\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2012\/01\/Eurocosmetics-Fig-7-Umibudo_SCI-300x245.jpg 300w, https:\/\/scienceblog.com\/poseidonsciences\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2012\/01\/Eurocosmetics-Fig-7-Umibudo_SCI-366x300.jpg 366w, https:\/\/scienceblog.com\/poseidonsciences\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2012\/01\/Eurocosmetics-Fig-7-Umibudo_SCI.jpg 549w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Anyway, that was my \u2018scientific\u2019 excuse for initiating a worldwide search for new exotic seaweeds.\u00a0 But beyond the science and the capitalistic expectations, there is always a thrill in the hunt. Sister Avelin Mary, the heroine of the tale, and I always refer to such scientific adventures as \u2018treasure hunting\u2019 (in a biological sense).\u00a0 Sister Avelin is a marine biologist and a Roman Catholic nun belonging to the Congregation of the Mother of Sorrows Servants of Mary.\u00a0 After her PhD in zoology, she went on to do her post-doctoral work at Osborne Laboratories (New York Zoological Society) and Duke University Marine Laboratories (Beaufort, North Carolina).\u00a0 She returned to India to establish her own independent research group in 1988.\u00a0 Established in the port city of Tuticorin and with permission of the Mother General of her Congregation, this nonprofit research institution, called Sacred Heart Marine Research Centre (SHMRC), became one of the premier marine science research centers where Sister Avelin studied the biology of barnacles <sup>[1]<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why of all things barnacles?<\/strong> That was her area of training and focus of interest while at Duke University and the research program was conceived at the time when there was an urgent need to find alternatives to the toxic tributyl tin (TBT) widely used in marine paints to prevent barnacles from attaching.\u00a0 TBT is a nonspecific organotoxin and among the most toxic man-made chemicals in use.\u00a0 It kills all marine life on contact! \u00a0She identified one such non-toxic natural anti-barnacle chemical from soft corals called <em>Juncellin<\/em>, named for Avelin and the octocoral, <em>Juncella<\/em> <sup>[2]<\/sup>.\u00a0 My collaboration with Sister Avelin began in 1994 and continues today, the longest, productive and continuous scientific collaboration Poseidon Sciences ever have had.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\"><a href=\"https:\/\/scienceblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2012\/01\/Eurocosmetics_FIg_6_Seagrapes_from-around-the-globe_SCI.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-216\" src=\"https:\/\/scienceblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2012\/01\/Eurocosmetics_FIg_6_Seagrapes_from-around-the-globe_SCI-273x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"273\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/scienceblog.com\/poseidonsciences\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2012\/01\/Eurocosmetics_FIg_6_Seagrapes_from-around-the-globe_SCI-273x300.jpg 273w, https:\/\/scienceblog.com\/poseidonsciences\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2012\/01\/Eurocosmetics_FIg_6_Seagrapes_from-around-the-globe_SCI.jpg 467w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 273px) 100vw, 273px\" \/><\/a>In 2007, I posed the question to Sister Avelin about the presence of Indian seagrapes (<em>Caulerpa lentillifera<\/em>), a unique edible seaweed delicacy grown in Okinawa.\u00a0 It is found mostly in the Pacific Rim and commonly referred to as <em>sea caviar<\/em>, as <em>nama<\/em> in Fiji, as <em>lato<\/em> in Philippines and <em>umi budo<\/em> in Japan.\u00a0 Highly priced as a delicacy, seagrapes really are succulent miniature grape-like seaweeds.\u00a0 Upon biting on the seagrapes, the salty interior bursts in your mouth.\u00a0 However, this marine plant is seasonal and available only during the dry season.\u00a0 This seaweed requires normal seawater salinity to grow and die when salinity drops during the rainy season.\u00a0 SHMRC\u2019s research site in Tuticorin (Tamil Nadu, South India) is ideal for cultivating the seagrapes since it has two short monsoons, not in the path of cyclones, with stable salinity and temperature year round.<\/div>\n<p class=\"mceTemp\">I thought seagrapes ought to be naturally occurring along the coast of India.\u00a0 This question led us through several years of an exciting quest and I would like to share this story with you.<\/p>\n<p>There was a 2004 article by Mantri <sup>[3]<\/sup> that described seagrape found in the Gulf of Kutch on the northwest coast of India.\u00a0 However, the discovery was not well received by the experts in marine botany who suggested that it was merely an error in identification. Further literature research on the topic indicated that seagrapes, for reasons unknown, had been declared extinct in all of India for over half a century, according to the experts.\u00a0 The last survey showing presence of seagrape beds was in 1955 and subsequent surveys yielded no specimens <sup>[4]<\/sup>.\u00a0 We consulted botanists and was told not to waste our time looking for it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/scienceblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2012\/01\/Eurocosmetics_Fig_2_Map_India_and_survey_areas_SCI1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-210\" src=\"https:\/\/scienceblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2012\/01\/Eurocosmetics_Fig_2_Map_India_and_survey_areas_SCI1-256x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"256\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/scienceblog.com\/poseidonsciences\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2012\/01\/Eurocosmetics_Fig_2_Map_India_and_survey_areas_SCI1-256x300.jpg 256w, https:\/\/scienceblog.com\/poseidonsciences\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2012\/01\/Eurocosmetics_Fig_2_Map_India_and_survey_areas_SCI1.jpg 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 256px) 100vw, 256px\" \/><\/a>India has a vast coastline.\u00a0 We could not imagine that the \u2018experts\u2019 have explored all of its 7,517 km coastal zones exhaustively to make such a definitive declaration of extinction.\u00a0 And, as we have seen in the last decade, other species once thought extinct, seems to turn up all the time, found accidentally or through sheer persistence.\u00a0 Take for example the story of the Hula Painted frog that was also declared extinct 50 years when its swamp habitat was drained totally to get rid of malaria in the Hula Valley of Israel.\u00a0 Rehydration of the swamp brought back the species. Another example is one species of giant Galapagos tortoise, <em>Chelonoidis elephantopus<\/em>, once declared extinct for the last 150 years and just recently found again.\u00a0 There are many more examples just in the last year alone.<\/p>\n<p>So, we thought it is just a matter of looking hard enough for the \u2018treasure.\u2019 \u00a0All we need is some luck and determination.\u00a0 We decided on a hunch that it is not extinct and that maybe seagrapes were just simply hard to find.<\/p>\n<p>The last known location of seagrapes was in Krudasai, just about 100 miles in front of our marine station in Tuticorin.\u00a0 However, the site has long been converted to a protected marine reserve and off limits to harvesting of any organism.\u00a0 Beyond the reserve is a vast area and we have sent divers to search beyond the exclusion zone.\u00a0 Seagrapes can survive in a wide range of habitats, from rocky subsea outcrops to muddy-sandy substrates where it attach.\u00a0 Our own surveys covered a wide area from Tuticorin (Toothukudi) to Mandapam.<\/p>\n<p>Months of treasure hunting yielded nothing!\u00a0 It was like looking for the Titanic without the benefit of sonar and a GPS unit.\u00a0 Our broad, methodical sweep, looking for a natural bed of seagrapes was a failure.\u00a0 But, Sister Avelin, one of the most optimistic people I have ever known, persisted onwards.\u00a0 In an <em>India Today<\/em> magazine article, she said that \u201cthere is no magic in the world [of science] except the magic of hard work.\u201d\u00a0 That very much sums up Sister Avelin.<\/p>\n<p>Then came the hunch&#8211;the seagrape bed still exists; it is simply not accessible and that fragments wash out of the bed during monsoons, some of them spreading to the shore.\u00a0 We thought it is was a wild hunch, but Sister Avelin was persistent and thought that it was worth one more try.\u00a0 This time, instead of looking deep underwater, we simply instructed harvesters to take a few kilogram samples from near shore beds of seaweeds and bring it to the lab.\u00a0 At the same time one of our company\u2019s biologists from Athena Biosystems in the Philippines, Araceli Q. Adrias, went to India to help sort and identify the seagrapes from the mass of mixed species of harvested seaweeds.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_214\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-214\" style=\"width: 753px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/scienceblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2012\/01\/Eurocosmetics_FIg_3SeagrapesSCI-from-JM.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-214\" src=\"https:\/\/scienceblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2012\/01\/Eurocosmetics_FIg_3SeagrapesSCI-from-JM.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"763\" height=\"666\" srcset=\"https:\/\/scienceblog.com\/poseidonsciences\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2012\/01\/Eurocosmetics_FIg_3SeagrapesSCI-from-JM.jpg 763w, https:\/\/scienceblog.com\/poseidonsciences\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2012\/01\/Eurocosmetics_FIg_3SeagrapesSCI-from-JM-300x261.jpg 300w, https:\/\/scienceblog.com\/poseidonsciences\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2012\/01\/Eurocosmetics_FIg_3SeagrapesSCI-from-JM-343x300.jpg 343w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 763px) 100vw, 763px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-214\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sorting the seaweeds manually to identify fragments of seagrapes (top left), Seagrapes found compared to mass of other seaweeds collected from near shore (top right), an entire fragment of seagrape (bottom left), close up look at a single \u2018grape\u2019 and a schematic of the grapes on a branch (bottom right).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>And, indeed the wild hunch paid off!\u00a0 After hours of exhausting work, we found 16 grams of pure seagrapes embedded in the mass of other seaweeds, such as <em>C. racemosa<\/em> (a related species with almost similar physical characteristics), <em>C. sertularioides<\/em>, <em>Enteromorpha flexuosa<\/em> and <em>C. peltata<\/em>.\u00a0 Our seagrape collection represented less than 0.01% of the total mass collected from the near shore.\u00a0 With much effort and overcoming the objections of other marine botanical \u2018experts,\u2019 the seagrape manuscript describing the find was published in 2009 <sup>[5]<\/sup>. \u00a0This Indian species represents a new sub-strain; smaller \u2018grapes\u2019 and more spaced than typical specimens found in other countries. Adrias (bottom left), and Sister Vitalina (bottom right).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Seagrapes have already been shown to have higher absorptive capacity compared to activated carbon.\u00a0 It has anti-oxidant, anti-viral and anti-cancer properties! <sup>[6.7.8.9.10]<\/sup>. Ongoing research is yielding interesting findings that will have unique applications in cosmetics.\u00a0 It offers a unique opportunity to formulators for an ingredient that is natural, sustainable, reproducible and rare.\u00a0 With a renewable, secure, year-round supply, Sister Avelin\u2019s seagrapes, she prefers to call in Tamil as <em>kadalthiratchai<\/em>, may soon yield new and exciting products for cosmetics and other industrial applications.<\/p>\n<p>Our \u2018treasure hunt\u2019 at sea continues.\u2026.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jonathan R.
