{"id":111,"date":"2015-06-18T07:02:23","date_gmt":"2015-06-18T07:02:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thepoetryofscience.peachpuff-wolverine-566518.hostingersite.com\/?p=111"},"modified":"2015-06-18T07:03:06","modified_gmt":"2015-06-18T07:03:06","slug":"a-brief-history-of-science","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/scienceblog.com\/thepoetryofscience\/111\/a-brief-history-of-science\/","title":{"rendered":"A Brief History of Science"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Let us begin, as with all things in Greece<\/p>\n<p>Where science was used to bring about peace<\/p>\n<p>Thales the Milesian foretold an eclipse;<\/p>\n<p>With the Saros cycle he\u2019d come to grips.<\/p>\n<p>Empedocles gave us the humours four<\/p>\n<p>And then cried himself immortal before<\/p>\n<p>Into a volcano he thought to dive;<\/p>\n<p>We speak of him now, so he\u2019s still alive.<\/p>\n<p>Eratosthenes then measured the Earth<\/p>\n<p>By using a solstice to give the girth<\/p>\n<p>The circumference taken at this event,<\/p>\n<p>Was within an error of two per cent.<\/p>\n<p>The king of Sicily we have to thank,<\/p>\n<p>For Archimedes getting in a tank<\/p>\n<p>Of water, before naked he did sound<\/p>\n<p>Eureka! The law of displacement I\u2019ve found.<\/p>\n<p>Of Aristotle I will just be brief,<\/p>\n<p>For he was not of science, but a thief.<\/p>\n<p>He stole the maven from their poet form<\/p>\n<p>And left us separated and forlorn.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In the dark ages much science was lost<\/p>\n<p>What Copernicus knew came at a cost.<\/p>\n<p>Then came great Tycho with his golden nose;<\/p>\n<p>Kepler\u2019s three laws did the old rules expose.<\/p>\n<p>Elliptical orbits in two foci,<\/p>\n<p>With Time squared and length cubed he mapped the sky.<\/p>\n<p>By testing these thoughts with experiments,<\/p>\n<p>Galileo caused a chain of events.<\/p>\n<p>Sadly his resistance was more than air,<\/p>\n<p>As the Catholic Church caused much despair.<\/p>\n<p>From Venus\u2019s transit, Horrocks did prove<\/p>\n<p>That the geocentric model must move.<\/p>\n<p>Huygens proposed light was like waves at sea,<\/p>\n<p>Newton said No! Particles it must be.<\/p>\n<p>And Isaac\u2019s opinion held the most sway,<\/p>\n<p>His mad genius forced others away,<\/p>\n<p>From Liebnitz to Hooke and all in between<\/p>\n<p>This force of nature was selfish and mean.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Horizons were now expanding at speed<\/p>\n<p>As science tried hard to sate mankind\u2019s need.<\/p>\n<p>Linnaeus set out a new catalogue,<\/p>\n<p>With animal, plant and mineral to log.<\/p>\n<p>He used these to group all things on the grounds<\/p>\n<p>Nature does not proceed by leaps and bounds.<\/p>\n<p>Lavoisier then set out to prove<\/p>\n<p>That whilst in reactions, chemicals move<\/p>\n<p>Nothing is created and nothing lost,<\/p>\n<p>To the total balance there is no cost.<\/p>\n<p>Another Frenchman, Proust, then showed us how<\/p>\n<p>That no matter what mixture you allow<\/p>\n<p>Elements will combine in the same way,<\/p>\n<p>Definite proportions will just hold sway.<\/p>\n<p>The church now was loosing the great debate<\/p>\n<p>That Earth was as old Adam\u2019s birthdate.<\/p>\n<p>As Hutton revealed the following trend:<\/p>\n<p>No hint of start and no hope of an end,<\/p>\n<p>Herschel turned his lens to the sky<\/p>\n<p>And found round our sun new planets to fly.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A century of progress was to come<\/p>\n<p>Which would leave non-believers feeling numb.<\/p>\n<p>The concept of the atom was not great,<\/p>\n<p>So Dalton came along to lend some weight<\/p>\n<p>And even though to colour he was blind<\/p>\n<p>Relative atomic sums he assigned.<\/p>\n<p>But ordering these numbers made no sense,<\/p>\n<p>Chemists like John Newlands it did incense,<\/p>\n<p>Until Mendeleev showed how it was done,<\/p>\n<p>His table predicted geranium.<\/p>\n<p>The valency of atoms is their bond,<\/p>\n<p>Determining how molecules respond,<\/p>\n<p>Their non-linear structure was opaque<\/p>\n<p>Until Kekul\u00e9 dreamed up a giant snake.<\/p>\n<p>Yet something more fantastic was to come<\/p>\n<p>To electricity we did succumb.<\/p>\n<p>And one day you may tax it! Came the cry<\/p>\n<p>As Faraday induced a current by<\/p>\n<p>Moving magnetic fields across two coils<\/p>\n<p>Henry showed the same but lost the spoils.<\/p>\n<p>By working out the conservation cost,<\/p>\n<p>Joule showed how energy is never lost;<\/p>\n<p>Electromagnetism had a path,<\/p>\n<p>And Maxwell proved it all with gorgeous math.<\/p>\n<p>As Becquerel then later used X-Rays<\/p>\n<p>He noticed something that soon would amaze,<\/p>\n<p>By keeping samples in captivity<\/p>\n<p>He had found radioactivity.<\/p>\n<p>But then, as with all things good in mankind,<\/p>\n<p>It took a woman\u2019s touch to truly find<\/p>\n<p>How this was an atomic property<\/p>\n<p>Thank heavens that we had Marie Curie.<\/p>\n<p>With atomic theory now running rings,<\/p>\n<p>Darwin did question the nature of things<\/p>\n<p>Did man come from ape, or was ape from man,<\/p>\n<p>Were we part of some grand event or plan?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A shift in paradigm was close at hand<\/p>\n<p>What we now knew we did not understand.<\/p>\n<p>Light was not particle, nor was it wave<\/p>\n<p>Planck showed how it should discretely behave,<\/p>\n<p>Einstein then realised what all this meant:<\/p>\n<p>Space-time is relative; light could be bent.<\/p>\n<p>Schr\u00f6dinger gave us far more than a cat,<\/p>\n<p>His wave equations showed physicists that<\/p>\n<p>Classical orbits were really a lie.<\/p>\n<p>As Heisenberg found you could not rely,<\/p>\n<p>On measuring speed and place at one time,<\/p>\n<p>To say things are certain would be a crime.<\/p>\n<p>Whilst Wegener proved how Earth drifts apart<\/p>\n<p>Lemaitre showed the big bang was the start;<\/p>\n<p>Hubble said our Universe does expand<\/p>\n<p>Measuring galaxies like grains of sand.<\/p>\n<p>As Chandrasekhar made his black hole mark<\/p>\n<p>Zwicky then showed most of matter is dark,<\/p>\n<p>But nothing was blacker than mankind\u2019s heart<\/p>\n<p>When Oppenheimer split atoms apart;<\/p>\n<p>The destroyer of worlds, now he was death!<\/p>\n<p>Even today, we are holding our breath.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Building blocks of life were now being seen,<\/p>\n<p>With science appearing as if from dream.<\/p>\n<p>Hoyle showed how we are all made from stardust,<\/p>\n<p>Urey and Miller said life\u2019s not nonplussed.<\/p>\n<p>Watson and Crick unravelled DNA,<\/p>\n<p>Everett showed where there\u2019s will there\u2019s a way,<\/p>\n<p>Keeling proved that climate change is man\u2019s sin<\/p>\n<p>Lorenz showed the chaos that we live in.<\/p>\n<p>Higgs said a vacuum has some stuff in it<\/p>\n<p>Hawking showed that a black hole does emit<\/p>\n<p>Whilst Wilmut cloned a new sheep from a cell<\/p>\n<p>Tim Berners-Lee opened heaven and hell.<\/p>\n<p>Marcy revealed all the worlds in between,<\/p>\n<p>Geim and Noveselov gave us graphene.<\/p>\n<p>With lots to unravel and more to find,<\/p>\n<p>Does science have answers for all mankind?<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_112\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-112\" style=\"width: 290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/scienceblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/06\/1024px-Sanzio_01.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-112\" src=\"https:\/\/scienceblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/06\/1024px-Sanzio_01-300x233.jpg\" alt=\"The School of Athens: close to where it all began.\" width=\"300\" height=\"233\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-112\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The School of Athens: close to where it all began.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This poem is constructed using <a href=\"http:\/\/www.britannica.com\/art\/heroic-couplet\" target=\"_blank\">heroic couplets<\/a>, and dedicated to the history of science. It was written for and performed at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scienceshowoff.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Science Showoff<\/a> in Manchester, as part of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.britishscienceassociation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">British Science Association\u2019s<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.britishscienceassociation.org\/Event\/science-communication-conference-2015\" target=\"_blank\">Science Communication Conference 2015<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It is in no means complete, but it is at least a start.
