{"id":14,"date":"2014-07-24T15:02:52","date_gmt":"2014-07-24T15:02:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thepoetryofscience.peachpuff-wolverine-566518.hostingersite.com\/?p=14"},"modified":"2014-07-24T15:02:52","modified_gmt":"2014-07-24T15:02:52","slug":"arctic-methane","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/scienceblog.com\/thepoetryofscience\/14\/arctic-methane\/","title":{"rendered":"Arctic Methane"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Since the Industrial revolution in the 18<sup>th<\/sup> Century,<\/p>\n<p>Methane levels have gone up by almost a factor of three.<\/p>\n<p>And whilst termites and bovines have their roles to play<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s anthropogenic emissions that are mostly to blame.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s going on in the Arctic is important to know,<\/p>\n<p>With potential methane time bombs waiting to blow.<\/p>\n<p>But before making claims and saying that we are sure,<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s important to make clear what may be obscure.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Methane emissions over the Arctic are quite complex,<\/p>\n<p>And are not simply solved by the regression of x.<\/p>\n<p>As well as clathrates, ebullition, and wetland release,<\/p>\n<p>Long-range transport can also cause an increase.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In order to better quantify these methane details,<\/p>\n<p>Thorough measurements are needed across all the scales.<\/p>\n<p>From ground-based to satellite, and all in between,<\/p>\n<p>With models to show beyond twenty fourteen.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>My research uses remote sensing measurements from a plane,<\/p>\n<p>Converting measured spectra into columns of methane.<\/p>\n<p>This bridges the gap between land and outer space,<\/p>\n<p>Helping to ensure that no emissions are misplaced.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>By calibrating my results against an in situ device,<\/p>\n<p>I have been able to show that my method is nice.<\/p>\n<p>With all measurements that have been taken to date,<\/p>\n<p>Agreeing to within 5% of the in situ rate.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In conclusion, my work will help to better constrain,<\/p>\n<p>The sources and sinks of Artic methane.<\/p>\n<p>This data can then be used to predict,<\/p>\n<p>What emission sources we need to restrict.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15\" style=\"width: 290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/scienceblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2014\/07\/photo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-15\" src=\"https:\/\/scienceblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2014\/07\/photo-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"The shadow of the research aircraft on the summertime Arctic landscape.
