{"id":149,"date":"2015-09-11T08:39:47","date_gmt":"2015-09-11T08:39:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thepoetryofscience.peachpuff-wolverine-566518.hostingersite.com\/?p=149"},"modified":"2015-11-26T08:22:50","modified_gmt":"2015-11-26T08:22:50","slug":"when-will-we-stop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/scienceblog.com\/thepoetryofscience\/149\/when-will-we-stop\/","title":{"rendered":"When Will We Stop?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When will we stop to think of what we do?<\/p>\n<p>We treat this land as if it is our own;<\/p>\n<p>Then all of our mistakes start to accrue,<\/p>\n<p>With consequences steady and unknown.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Arctic is not out there all alone,<\/p>\n<p>Sea ice protects us with its whitish hue;<\/p>\n<p>Without it Earth would sink like a hot stone,<\/p>\n<p>When will we stop to think of what we do?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As well as helping mankind to ensue,<\/p>\n<p>Bacteria will feed there until grown;<\/p>\n<p>Zooplankton is one species that pass through,<\/p>\n<p>We treat this land as if it is our own.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Now when zooplankton feed, poison is shown,<\/p>\n<p>As chemical reactions follow through;<\/p>\n<p>Creating neurotoxins to dethrone,<\/p>\n<p>Then all of our mistakes start to accrue.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When sea ice melt salt levels do imbue,<\/p>\n<p>Which traps organic matter in one zone;<\/p>\n<p>This feeding ground for zooplankton is new,<\/p>\n<p>With consequences steady and unknown.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Yet\u00a0as the Earth heats up we start to moan,<\/p>\n<p>Then flood our lands for hydropower too;<\/p>\n<p>But as this salty water is now sewn,<\/p>\n<p>Zooplankton feed and poison starts to spew.<\/p>\n<p>When will we stop?<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_150\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-150\" style=\"width: 290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/scienceblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/09\/Sea_Ice_MeltPonds.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-150\" src=\"https:\/\/scienceblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/09\/Sea_Ice_MeltPonds-300x197.png\" alt=\"Melting sea ice is dangerous for so many reasons (Photo Credit: NASA)\" width=\"300\" height=\"197\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-150\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Melting sea ice is dangerous for so many reasons (Photo Credit: NASA)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This is a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.volecentral.co.uk\/vf\/rondouble.htm\" target=\"_blank\">rondeau redoubl\u00e9<\/a> about a recent study, which <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/early\/2015\/09\/02\/1505541112.abstract\">found that high levels of a powerful neurotoxin (methylmercury) are released as a result of melting sea-ice in the Arctic caused by global warming<\/a>. Similar processes were also found to occur when flooding lands in preparation for hydroelectric development.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When will we stop to think of what we do?
