{"id":159,"date":"2015-10-02T07:01:14","date_gmt":"2015-10-02T07:01:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thepoetryofscience.peachpuff-wolverine-566518.hostingersite.com\/?p=159"},"modified":"2015-11-23T08:46:21","modified_gmt":"2015-11-23T08:46:21","slug":"the-sea-life-is-never-the-same","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/scienceblog.com\/thepoetryofscience\/159\/the-sea-life-is-never-the-same\/","title":{"rendered":"The Sea Life is Never the Same"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Antarctic sea shelves are diverse,<\/p>\n<p>With worms and seastars worth acclaim;<\/p>\n<p>Conditions are not too adverse,<\/p>\n<p>The sea life is never the same.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But as temperatures start to rise,<\/p>\n<p>The cold barrier becomes lame;<\/p>\n<p>From the slopes new creatures arise,<\/p>\n<p>The sea life is never the same.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Below nought point four degrees C,<\/p>\n<p>The King Crab will die from cold pain;<\/p>\n<p>But with warming waves it is free,<\/p>\n<p>The sea life is never the same.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And if they got on to the shelves,<\/p>\n<p>They would look for new lands to reign<\/p>\n<p>And new subjects for their royal selves;<\/p>\n<p>The sea life is never the same.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Once there they would unleash their hell<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019d kill and they\u2019d butcher and maim<\/p>\n<p>All creatures with a weakened shell;<\/p>\n<p>The sea life is never the same.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For seastars and worms cannot cope<\/p>\n<p>With royalty who wish to reclaim<\/p>\n<p>The lands up the way from their slope,<\/p>\n<p>The sea life is never the same.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Their soft skeletons are too weak<\/p>\n<p>Now all they can do is exclaim:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur outlook is getting quite bleak,<\/p>\n<p>The sea life is never the same.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_160\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-160\" style=\"width: 290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/scienceblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/10\/CSIRO_ScienceImage_2839_Spiny_Stone_King_Crab.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-160\" src=\"https:\/\/scienceblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/10\/CSIRO_ScienceImage_2839_Spiny_Stone_King_Crab-300x201.jpg\" alt=\"The frankly terrifying King Crab (Photo Credit: CSIRO)\" width=\"300\" height=\"201\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-160\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>The frankly terrifying King Crab (Photo Credit: CSIRO)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This is a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.shadowpoetry.com\/resources\/wip\/kyrielle.html\" target=\"_blank\">Kyrielle<\/a>, written about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/early\/2015\/09\/24\/1513962112.full.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">a piece of recent research<\/a> that has shown how rising sea temperatures will mean that king crabs can survive in climates that were previously too cold for them.
