{"id":182,"date":"2015-11-27T10:01:54","date_gmt":"2015-11-27T10:01:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thepoetryofscience.peachpuff-wolverine-566518.hostingersite.com\/?p=182"},"modified":"2015-11-27T10:10:13","modified_gmt":"2015-11-27T10:10:13","slug":"rhythm-is-not-just-mans-conquest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/scienceblog.com\/thepoetryofscience\/182\/rhythm-is-not-just-mans-conquest\/","title":{"rendered":"Rhythm is Not Just Man\u2019s Conquest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Rhythm is in the heart of man,<\/p>\n<p>We play with it from when we&#8217;re young;<\/p>\n<p>It lays down roots and helps us plan,<\/p>\n<p>Bunga bung bung, bunga bung bung.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Without it we could never speak,<\/p>\n<p>And we&#8217;d be beasts without a tongue;<\/p>\n<p>Reduced to grunts and the odd shriek,<\/p>\n<p>Bunga bung bung, bunga bung bung.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Whilst making sounds at those we meet<\/p>\n<p>Is simple, it is lots of fun;<\/p>\n<p>Far harder is to match their beat,<\/p>\n<p>Bunga bung bung, bunga bung bung.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For synchronicity is key<\/p>\n<p>To understanding how we&#8217;re strung;<\/p>\n<p>In terms of pitch and frequency,<\/p>\n<p>Bunga bung bung, bunga bung bung.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>So we researched if a primate<\/p>\n<p>Could too repeat some songs unsung;<\/p>\n<p>Using a drum to sounds create:<\/p>\n<p>Bunga bung bung, bunga bung bung.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A female bonobo came forth,<\/p>\n<p>Called Kuni, but not in her tongue;<\/p>\n<p>Struck up the drum and then henceforth:<\/p>\n<p>Bunga bung bung, bunga bung bung.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>She matched the tempo that was hewn<\/p>\n<p>Two thirds of the time when she swung;<\/p>\n<p>And half the time she matched the tune,<\/p>\n<p>Bunga bung bung, bunga bung bung.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The results of this primate\u2019s test<\/p>\n<p>Were similar to our own young;<\/p>\n<p>Rhythm is not just man\u2019s conquest:,<\/p>\n<p>Bunga bung bung, bunga bung bung.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_183\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-183\" style=\"width: 290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/scienceblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/11\/Apeldoorn_Apenheul_zoo_Bonobo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-183\" src=\"https:\/\/scienceblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/11\/Apeldoorn_Apenheul_zoo_Bonobo-300x297.jpg\" alt=\"A bonobo, getting ready to lay down some mad beats (Photo Credit: Natataek at English Wikivoyage).\" width=\"300\" height=\"297\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-183\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A bonobo, getting ready to lay down some mad beats (Photo Credit: Natataek at English Wikivoyage).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This is a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.shadowpoetry.com\/resources\/wip\/kyrielle.html\" target=\"_blank\">Kyrielle<\/a>, written about <a href=\"http:\/\/psycnet.apa.org\/?&amp;fa=main.doiLanding&amp;doi=10.1037\/com0000011\" target=\"_blank\">this piece of research<\/a>, which investigated the extent to which <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bonobo\" target=\"_blank\">bonobo<\/a> exhibit sensitivity to auditory rhythms, by seeing how they were able to match the tempo and tune of a human drummer.
