Copyright \u00a9 2016 Zootaxa<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This is a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shadowpoetry.com\/resources\/wip\/kyrielle.html\" target=\"_blank\">Kyrielle<\/a>, inspired by <a href=\"http:\/\/biotaxa.org\/Zootaxa\/article\/view\/zootaxa.4173.3.2\" target=\"_blank\">recent research<\/a> which found a new species of fish following a flooding event in the\u00a0northern Zagros mountains in Iraq in March 2016.<\/p>\n<p>During these severe floods, a large number of blind and scale less fish were washed to the surface through a hole in the ground, coming from the water in an underground cave system. Many of these helpless creatures were eaten by birds, but some of them were taken by researchers and then analysed. The analysis (which included an breakdown of the fish&#8217;s DNA) revealed that this was an entirely new species of fish,\u00a0which was given the name Eidinemacheilus proudlovei by the researchers, in honour of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/Graham_Proudlove\">Graham Proudlove<\/a>, a world expert on subterranean fishes, from Manchester Museum in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>An audio version of the poem can be head <a href=\"https:\/\/macguffin.io\/sam-illingworth\/subterranean-homesick-fish\/read\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In deep dark ponds you gently glide, You made this cave your place to hide;
