Soil biodiversity plays a fundamental role in maintaining healthy ecosystems, yet it is often overlooked. Traditional methods of assessing soil health can be labour-intensive and may not fully capture the complexity of soil life. There is growing interest in finding more efficient and accurate ways to monitor this hidden diversity, particularly across different types of ecosystems.

This research explored the use of ecoacoustics – a technique that uses sound to monitor biodiversity – in an Australian grassy woodland, a region where such methods had not been previously tested. By analysing soil sounds across areas with different restoration histories, the study found that areas with more established vegetation had higher levels of acoustic complexity and diversity, which correlated with greater abundance and variety of soil invertebrates. These findings suggest that ecoacoustics can be a valuable tool for monitoring soil biodiversity, not only in temperate forests but also in other ecosystems like grassy woodlands. This is significant because it offers a promising new method to help protect and restore the planet’s diverse ecosystems.

Ecoacoustics uses sound to monitor soil life, showing healthier biodiversity in restored woodlands, offering a new way to protect ecosystems.

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false

1
29,2,414,3,82,188
post-3905","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-science-poems","tag-nature","tag-poetry","tag-poetry-and-science","tag-science","tag-soil","tag-sound","generate-columns","tablet-grid-50","mobile-grid-100","grid-parent","grid-50","no-featured-image-padding","resize-featured-image
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v27.3 (Yoast SEO v27.3) -
