A New Approach to Device Security

As our homes and workplaces fill with smart devices, security becomes increasingly critical. While these connected devices can improve efficiency and reduce workload, they also create new vulnerabilities to cyber attacks.

Traditional security methods have two major weaknesses: they require centralized data collection, which can compromise privacy, and they struggle to identify new types of attacks they haven’t seen before.

Blockchain Meets Machine Learning

The research team’s solution combines two powerful technologies. They established what they call a “blockchain based federated learning architecture” where devices can learn to detect attacks locally, then share their insights securely through the blockchain.

This innovative system includes a “collaborative model parameters verification mechanism” and special consensus protocols to identify and exclude any malicious participants from the training process, ensuring the system remains secure even if some devices are compromised.

Three Stages of Protection

The system works through three distinct phases: a pre-training stage, a new attacks discovering stage, and a global model training stage. This allows the network to continuously learn and adapt to new threats while maintaining security.

Testing on a public dataset showed that the new method outperforms existing approaches in both maintaining security and discovering new types of attacks.
