Summary: A comprehensive study involving over 5,300 participants reveals that using text abbreviations like “IDK” or “GOAT” makes senders appear insincere and less likely to receive responses. The research, spanning multiple experiments across 37 countries, found this perception holds true even among younger users who commonly use abbreviations.

Think twice before typing “TBH” in your next text message. New research from Stanford University suggests that using abbreviations might be undermining your relationships and making you appear less sincere to others.
The Hidden Cost of Shortcuts
Despite widespread use of text abbreviations – with 99% of survey respondents reporting they use them – the research reveals a significant disconnect. “We thought texters might like abbreviations because it would convey an informal sense of closeness, so we were surprised that abbreviations elicited negative perceptions about people who use them,” says lead researcher David Fang from Stanford University.
The study used various methods to test how abbreviations affect communication, including analyzing Discord group chats, dating scenarios, and Tinder conversations across 37 countries. The results consistently showed that people using abbreviations received shorter and fewer responses, and were less likely to receive contact information from others.
Age Isn’t Everything
While younger people tend to use more abbreviations in their texts, the research found they aren’t necessarily fans of receiving them. “While our overall results on age were mixed, it’s clear that younger people are not particularly fond of abbreviations, though the strength of this aversion may vary by age,” Fang notes.
When to Abbreviate
The impact of abbreviations may vary depending on the relationship context. “We often tailor the effort we put into conversations to match the significance of the relationship,” Fang explains. “In some cases, it makes sense to invest less effort and accept being perceived as less sincere, like quickly texting with a delivery driver.”
