Smart people tend to be curious people, and curiosity shows up in how they spend their free time. It’s why certain hobbies keep appearing in research on reasoning, memory, learning and creative achievement: the activities that reward pattern recognition and sustained problem-solving naturally attract people who are good at those things.

A note on what the science does and doesn’t show. Researchers in this area usually measure skill, training or performance on cognitive tests rather than simple enjoyment, and their findings describe averages across groups with plenty of overlap between individuals. So no single hobby functions as a hidden IQ test. What the evidence does support is something subtler: certain pastimes are consistently linked with the cognitive abilities that intelligence tests measure, and being drawn to them says something real about how you like to use your mind.

The seven hobbies below have genuinely interesting research behind them. If several are part of your life, the studies suggest you’re in good company.

What this kind of evidence can and can’t tell you

An association can run in several directions. A person with strong reasoning skills may be drawn to chess. Chess practice may improve chess-related skills. Education, family income, free time and access to lessons may influence both the hobby and test performance. All three processes can operate at once.

There is another distinction that list-style claims often erase: enjoyment is not expertise. A grandmaster and someone who likes an occasional game share a hobby label, but they do not share the same amount of practice or skill. Even a real correlation between expertise and cognitive ability cannot classify every person who enjoys the activity.

With that limitation in place, these are seven hobbies with genuinely interesting evidence behind them.

Games that reward structured thinking

1. Playing chess

Chess is the clearest candidate because researchers have directly compared chess skill with several cognitive abilities. A 2016 meta-analysis in the journal Intelligence found an average correlation of 0.24 between chess skill and cognitive ability. The individual estimates were similar for fluid reasoning, acquired knowledge, short-term memory and processing speed.

That is a meaningful but modest relationship. It was stronger among young and unranked players than among adults and ranked players, and it still leaves most differences in chess skill unexplained. Most importantly, the researchers measured skill, not enjoyment. Liking chess may suggest comfort with patterns, rules and prolonged problem-solving, but it does not reveal an IQ score.

2. Playing cognitively demanding video games

Gaming evidence is broader and messier because a fast action game, a city-building simulation and a word puzzle demand different things. In 2026, researchers combined 133 studies with 14,245 participants in three meta-analyses. They reported small positive associations between video game play and cognitive abilities, including memory, spatial ability, visual attention, cognitive control and intelligence.

The review included correlations, group comparisons and controlled trials, which answer different questions. A small average effect also says little about a particular player. What this hobby can plausibly indicate is an appetite for rapid feedback, rule learning and increasingly difficult problems, especially when the games themselves demand those capacities.

3. Reading for pleasure

Reading is both a way to acquire knowledge and a complex act of attention, language processing and inference. A 2023 study of 10,243 participants in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development cohort found that earlier, sustained reading for pleasure was associated with better cognitive performance in young adolescence. The researchers controlled for socioeconomic status and also conducted longitudinal and genetically informed analyses.

It is impressive evidence, but not a license to identify high-IQ adults by their bookshelves. The study focused on childhood reading, and reading is entangled with schooling, the home environment and existing verbal ability. A cautious conclusion is that people who enjoy reading repeatedly place themselves in contact with new vocabulary, ideas and perspectives.

4. Learning another language

Language learning asks the brain to manage unfamiliar sounds, vocabulary, grammar and competing ways of expressing an idea. Those demands make it easy to assume that bilingualism creates a general cognitive advantage.

The evidence is more contested. A meta-analysis of 170 studies of bilingualism and executive function found advantages on some tasks and in some age groups, but not across the board. The authors also found signs that publication bias could inflate the reported effects. Bilingualism is not identical to learning a language for fun, and neither is equivalent to IQ. Enjoying languages may reveal curiosity about structure and culture, but science does not support treating it as proof of superior general intelligence.

5. Coding

Programming turns an intention into a formal sequence that a computer can execute. It rewards decomposition, error detection and the ability to shift between a system’s details and its larger purpose.

A 2021 review titled “Some Evidence on the Cognitive Benefits of Learning to Code” summarized a prior meta-analysis that found a large improvement in coding skills and a medium average transfer to other cognitive skills. The largest reported effects involved creative thinking, mathematics, metacognition, reasoning and spatial skills. Yet the review warned that some included studies were not randomized and that effects varied greatly by outcome and design. Learning to code can train useful skills. Merely enjoying it does not establish a person’s standing on an intelligence test.

Practice, expression and the limits of transfer

6. Playing a musical instrument

Playing music coordinates perception, timing, fine movement, memory and sustained practice. Musicians also tend to perform well on some cognitive measures, but that does not show that lessons caused a broad increase in intelligence.

A 2020 multilevel meta-analysis examined 54 studies, 254 effects and 6,984 children. Once study quality was taken into account, the overall effect of music training on nonmusical cognitive and academic outcomes was essentially zero. Weaker studies using non-active control groups produced small positive effects.

This is an important corrective. Intelligent children may be more likely to receive or persist with lessons, while families that can provide music training may differ in other ways. Music remains a demanding and rewarding hobby. Its value does not depend on turning it into an IQ intervention.

7. Creative writing, drawing or making

Creative hobbies involve generating possibilities and then applying enough judgment to select, revise and finish. Intelligence contributes to that process, but motivation, personality, opportunity and years of work matter too.

A 2021 meta-analysis combined 117 coefficients from 30 studies involving 21,748 participants. The overall correlation between intelligence-test performance and creative achievement was 0.16. It was smaller for achievement in the arts, at 0.09, than for science, at 0.19.

Those modest figures are exactly why “creative” should not be used as a synonym for “high IQ.” Enjoying photography, fiction, painting or design may show openness to ideas and a willingness to tolerate ambiguity. The finished work reflects much more than cognitive-test performance.

What these seven hobbies can actually tell you

The common thread is not a secret intelligence score. It is voluntary contact with challenge. These hobbies invite people to learn systems, notice patterns, hold information in mind, correct errors or create something that did not exist before.

That pattern can emerge because cognitive ability influences what people enjoy. It can also emerge because practice builds specialized skills, or because personality and opportunity lead someone toward mentally absorbing activities. Group averages cannot tell us which explanation applies to an individual.

So if you love several hobbies on this list, it is fair to say you probably enjoy using your mind. You may have accumulated knowledge and practiced forms of attention that many intelligence tests reward. You may also be an entirely average test taker who has found meaningful ways to stay curious.

The scientifically responsible compliment is not “your hobbies prove you have an above-average IQ.” It is simpler and probably more valuable: you have built a life in which thinking is something you choose to do for fun.
