New research shows that people with blue eyes have a single, common ancestor. A team at the University of Copenhagen have tracked down a genetic mutation which took place 6-10,000 years ago and is the cause of the eye colour of all blue-eyed humans alive on the planet today.
โOriginally, we all had brown eyesโ, said Professor Eiberg from the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine. โBut a genetic mutation affecting the OCA2 gene in our chromosomes resulted in the creation of a โswitchโ, which literally โturned offโ the ability to produce brown eyesโ. The OCA2 gene codes for the so-called P protein, which is involved in the production of melanin, the pigment that gives colour to our hair, eyes and skin. The โswitchโ, which is located in the gene adjacent to OCA2 does not, however, turn off the gene entirely, but rather limits its action to reducing the production of melanin in the iris โ effectively โdilutingโ brown eyes to blue. The switchโs effect on OCA2 is very specific therefore. If the OCA2 gene had been completely destroyed or turned off, human beings would be without melanin in their hair, eyes or skin colour โ a condition known as albinism.
Variation in the colour of the eyes from brown to green can all be explained by the amount of melanin in the iris, but blue-eyed individuals only have a small degree of variation in the amount of melanin in their eyes. โFrom this we can conclude that all blue-eyed individuals are linked to the same ancestor,โ says Professor Eiberg. โThey have all inherited the same switch at exactly the same spot in their DNA.โ Brown-eyed individuals, by contrast, have considerable individual variation in the area of their DNA that controls melanin production.
Professor Eiberg and his team examined mitochondrial DNA and compared the eye colour of blue-eyed individuals in countries as diverse as Jordan, Denmark and Turkey. His findings are the latest in a decade of genetic research, which began in 1996, when Professor Eiberg first implicated the OCA2 gene as being responsible for eye colour.
Nature shuffles our genes
The mutation of brown eyes to blue represents neither a positive nor a negative mutation. It is one of several mutations such as hair colour, baldness, freckles and beauty spots, which neither increases nor reduces a humanโs chance of survival. As Professor Eiberg says, โit simply shows that nature is constantly shuffling the human genome, creating a genetic cocktail of human chromosomes and trying out different changes as it does so.โ

Awe. Poor souls, who taught you the Bible and who taught them the Bible? 2020 is just the beginning of โstay wokeโ. Itโs absolutely true, blue eyes is mainly because of incest and green eyes are a rarity due to mutation. Donโt frown upon science, most of you are still alive today because of Science. Funny how Caucasians put themselves on a pedestal as the superior race, paint their tainted Jesus Christ white, the angels white, the clouds white and everything bad is black or brown. They hate hearing the truth, ever wondered after raping continents as they columbused their traditions theyโre still unhappy. Think real hard, maybe whites are lost, you don’t belong in this world, Africans are people of nature and you know it! Itโs pure jealously. I come from a blood line, deeply rooted in the south and as a white young girl, it was sad to overhear adults (important group) try to figure out how to have the DNA of blacks without the pigmentation. I then knew, oh shit not because Africans are less than as we were thought(most white households) itโs because we are threatened by them. 2020 is not cancelled, itโs a beautiful chaos, a necessity. My ancestors (whites) are scared of being the minority, we are dying at alarming rate (OD) and most of us donโt have children, whites are fucking scared.
For the poor religious souls, the Bible is from the Roman Empire, it as been rewritten countless times, your spiritual hyms by a rapist slave master, this one in particular (John Newton) but I understand your history books only teach you what they (Masons/1%) wants you to know.
This is a war on humanity, Africans (the spiritual ones, connected to the earth itself) Iโve heard (masons) say, we canโt let them win. Win what? You brought them here, Columbused their traditions, taught them your version of Ebonics English, break their backs to build the land you stole from the natives and now you want them to leave, but this is not even your fucking nation. All this research is an attempt for whites to find themselves, find their world, please accept, you are a mutation and the first human life found is not Adam and Eve but infact, a subsaharan Black woman. I know whites, you donโt like it but all facts not one bloody opinion. Educate YOURSELF before these โmeekโ Africans decide to rise and reverse slavery, 99% possibility. We should be thankful they are looking for equality and not revenge at this moment.
Where do you suppose the very wordswe use come from. Did you create them? Not really. Did you by chance create the smell of coffee? I wonder if you have ever noticed after looking around you and examining any and all animals on land or in water that we are very different. Sure, ants are slaves to their queen and workers but they do not build sky scrapers nor do Beavers send rockets to the moon. Maybe, just maybe, like man took the all too feisty Fox, the Mastiff, and the Bull Dog and bread them together to “Create” the in many ways superior dog we know as the Pit Bull so were we created. We all love a well built car. We all love a well bread dog or a good piece of music. All things created, and in theory there is nothing wrong with that. In theory, you and I did not create the Pit Bull, the engine or the car or the music we can’t imagine life without. Just because I did not and would not know how or even understand how does not mean the existence of these things did not have a beginning or have a creator or inventor. To a child everything is magical until they figure out Daddy did it. To people everything is Divine until we figure out how the creator did it. Maybe we did not invent the Diamond, but we figured out how to create them. In the image of our Creator or Creators we were created and in that likeness we create so so many things and recognize no other living thing does this. I’ve never met Jesus but something tells me that around 2017 years ago….. something happened and our calendar… it started again for some reason at year 01 and that is a trip. I can no more explain my hand or why my print is unique to anyone else or why people have to die so I won’t pretend science didn’t take a rib from a man to create a woman or breed a blend of vertebrates and a little of this or that to create ideally man. Personally, I ask myself the same question since I was 13. “What is IS?” I think the creation of man question is the easy or easier one in which to find answers. But, how did everything become, what is is and how did is become. These answers may even be pondered by Our Creator. People say that we will know everything after we die. This must be inside information straight from the source because that is a huge statement. Because I tend to think with common sense, death has to be no less beautiful than life or life would not make sense at all. I believe there is one answer, one high ideal, one fantastic characteristic of man that allows us to continue on and that is love. Love beyond a doubt is the most treasured value of man, and the vehicle for our soul. Without Love, the ego dies and all that is left is the mind and its not enough. The Soul without Love is without Identity or Purpose. To have only a mind is like having a face without expression or a piece of written music on paper never hearing it played. As for the RH factor I do not have it. I am O positive yet I possess almost all of the traits listed including lower blood pressure and body temperature, psychic ability and dreams, healing, electrical disturbances and yes the old fifties plastic record player played all by itself our favorite song. I happen to think black people are black because they spent so much time in freaking Africa and white people spent so much time in the cold away from the sun and the Indians are from a warm region and the south american, the tropics…. common sense. Nothing can alter the truth. Our Purpose is Love people. Do it for the love! It’s why we are here, how to get there and yes, it’s the meaning of life. Love, the beauty of simplicity. When the questions are so complicated, the answers are so simple. Let love be the judge of all things because it makes the most sense. Our minds are not enough no matter how hard we think it.

How was the time frame of 6 to 10, 000 years ago determined? Who was this ancestor? No mention of theories regarding genetic mutation travel around the world or associated csuses and time frames. Why is there no reference to the possibility of earlier mutations having occurred but the people were killed by superstition? This article is severely lacking in detail.
@John,
If you feel the need to assert your “facts”, kindly consider that spouting off in such a manner, with such horrific grammar and spelling, only serves to highlight your ignorance. People will chuckle, regard you as a dumb ass, and move on.
Oh, and also:
Piece is a fragment or a part of a whole object whether tangible or intangible, such as a piece of a puzzle, a piece of evidence (which, I might add, your tirade is completely free from), or a piece of imagination, which you clearly don’t have.
Peace is a tranquil, calm feeling or or scene, and it is this use of peace that would have been the correct end to your tirade.
Dum asses, tricks are for kids. God does not exist ,never did never will, fantasy, hear say, no proof,
Same proof said Santa is real, books,
Legends etc. Grow up ,smell the coffee, care about people first as people. Stop hating each other,we are all animals on a lone planet we all live on together. It’s the only planet we can live on , so stop destroying it. Once it’s gone we all are gone. But not to heaven or hell.just gone. Peice out.

What happens if you had bright blue eyes and they changed to green then? lol
I have blue eyes and my fiance is black. Her grandfather was white like me and also had blue eyes. Possible blue eyes.
what do u mean a single common ancestor?
1 person that they are all descended from, so 1 man/woman is the great great great great, etc etc, grandad/grandmother
I realize I’m a few months late checking in on this one but I only came to this page to help my daughter with her biology homework. Thank you so much for the info the research will be very helpful for her. But the comments, such a great example of a microcosm of humanity. I LOVE IT. The daily intolerance we put each other through is scientific proof that God’s Word is ABSOLUTELY TRUE. If you get a chance read the Bible alongside ANY science books/journals (page for page or however you can manage to balance the weight of both at the same time) the result will change your life. But as I have said before great research; common ancestor might have been one of Noah’s Boy’s :) 10-6000 years ago…I see what you did there.
shut the f*** up.
Seriously!! What’s wrong with these religious nuts? Nothing about this article has ANYTHING to do with your stupid religion! Do you have a brain???
The bible says we have a common ancestor two. Um hello Adam??? The first man created by God. Read the bible you two. Do not be biased in life. Read as much as possible!!!
I’ve learn several good stuff here. Definitely worth bookmarking for revisiting. I wonder how so much effort you put to create this type of great informative site.

Smugness is so distasteful. I can’t stand smug atheists who claim all religious people are superstitious, racist, and ignorant. Modern science was helped along by Christianity (the father of genetics was a monk, for crying out loud), and (most) religions and science can fit together quite well.
There is also a BIG difference between church people and those who truly study their religions.
I’m fascinated by new discoveries, and haven’t seen a scientific breakthrough that changes my mind about the existence of God (I’m a Christian).
I’m pretty sure Christians labelled most scientific thinkers as heretics for a very long time until they realized what wrongs they were doing.
Seriously, Jake??? The history of science began with people who believed in God (a very very few did not). They were rejected by both the secular and the church communities. It is shocking to me that people always have to bring the faith point up. Science is science, it doesn;t matter if the scientist believes in God or not. The scientist is supposed to be unbiased – a collector of facts. If we rejected everything discovered by those who had different beliefs/ideas than us, we would be without light bulbs and telephones, and germs would still be completely unknown, It took soooo long for people to believe that germs existed simply because they could not see them. Science belongs to those who believe in God and those who don’t. The name calling and rejection has happened on both sides. I wonder when that will stop.
While science isn’t proving to you the fact there is no God. To others who aren’t fearfull of death it’s obvious. Christianity helping science didn’t create science, science owes nothing to any religion all religion has done mostly is try discredit proven science!
It’s such a shame that we use the word religion when truely it should be Cult. Just because one cult has a much larger population than another cult shouldnt earn it the right for a different name to what it excatly is a brain washing sad cult.
AMEN to that Jill!!! I totally agree with you!!!!!
Google eye color vs. I.Q.
as far as religion ,it has no relevance in a scientific debate.Religion is no more than a pyschological tool for the week minded to have meaning. So leave that shit at the door. And as far as americans 99.9 percant of us are morons, but thats no difference from anywhere else.
Religion makes us believe in hocus pocus, and racism.Science shows how these traits are genitic mutations, and yes some are superior to others in differant ways.
mmmm is the focous on humans or on how stupid and pety we can be? he said she said they all said…..why dont i care? i dont care if i porpously misspelled words on porpouse or not but il bet that just bellow me on this page there will be all of the above because i didnt side with one or the other but as the whole to look upon the mess called humanity…..god bless you all…poor bastards….lol :)
I am so sick of my country being lumped as a whole in to the “stupid American” thing…there are some seriously stupid, bat shit crazy, racist, bigoted morons here, yep.
Just like every other country!
Slightly misleading to suggest that hair colour has no effect on survivability. Lighter hair colours such as blonde and ginger are far more common in northern countries like scotland and scandanavia because they also cause light skin which allows better absorbtion of light in the dark winters. Eskimos are excempt because they eat so much fish they don’t need the sunlight for vitamin D.
Slightly misleading to suggest that sunlight is the source of vitamin D. We get our vitamins from the foods we eat, the sun is simply necessary to PROCESS vitamin D.
Considering you also can’t spell “exempt”, I wouldn’t peg you as the most knowledgeable source of information on this web page.
well it seems a few religious nuts have commented on this and some racists and also some idiots hmmm well 1.religiuos uts/diots shut up 2. racists read a F@$KING book and get your dumb ass ideals out of your heads it’s a thread about eyes for christs sake not a religious/race based. also i’m getting the hint that lot of you people are americans no? maybe that ight explain some of the narrow minded comments
So you decide to pave a road of rants here and there thats fine with me. I dont respect bigots either, but you obviously are a very ignorant person to incinuate that about americans. Sounds like you have now coined yourself a racist fool as well. By the way your comment it very “narrow minded” hope you enjoy being a hypocrite. Ciao.
“iโm getting the hint that lot of you people are americans no”
hmmm – I sense a hypocrite railing against sterotypes
I know most people who are not true Americans are so opened minded their brains have fallen out!
Let us embrace all the beautiful colors of our lives. The colors of our eyes don’t really matter as long as they’re healthy.
Our most beautiful colors are located within.
Let us embrace all the beautiful colors of our lives. The colors of our eyes don’t really matter because our most beautiful colors can only be found within.
I found this blog intriguing and highly informative. Initially my interest was in the condition heterochromia iridis a condition (really genetic differentiation- in my humble opinion) in which the individual iris colors of one person will vary. I choose to ignore the preferential comments as well as the insulting ones. My genetics are also an interesting “cocktail” as Professor Eiberg so eloquent yet playfully described :o)
I have hazel eyes where does that leave me?
Mixed white/black perfectly.
I have blue eyes and I like to party, does that help?
Sad. I came here to learn about eye color and I see more racism. Of course, anytime there is an article about eye color, skin color, nationalities, you’ll find racism. Alot of black people catagorize whites as being all the same. “The white devil” is now what we are. Are all black people on crack? Are all black people shooting each other over $10.00? Can’t one black person speak proper English? Doesn’t any black person have an IQ over 70? Generalization. It’s wrong d. Baxter. Leave your neighborhood and explore outside of your racist city, friends, family, etc. I wish you success in finding peace and happiness.
Every single person in this world has a common ancestor. We are all at least 30th cousins. That’s only 32 generations ago for the most distant of relations.
@d.baxter you can write English and use a computer yet you have the opinions of an uneducated tool. you ‘recon’ the ‘gardens of babylon were due to light blue eyed people’ think about what you are saying, you ‘recon’ what basis is that?
I have blue eyes and I want nothing more than a utopian society, that has no money and therefore greed, a resource economy that only cares for research and human/spiritual advancement.
industrialization is equally relevant in the soviet union were communism (unlike capitalism) did not promote consumerism or materialism yet you have neglected this.
I too dislike the shallow materialistic consumer driven modern world that is totally global and is as/if not more prevalent in the east than the west. I put this down to the fact that I am enlightened to this and people who think everything is fine are ignorant drones. I am however not an ignorant racist like you d.baxter who blames everything on people with a genetic difference. You need to face facts that in the future countries are just going to be lines on a map and nothing more, and 70% of people like you are ignorant drones that are going to get left behind with your small minded attitude to your fellow humans, get educated, get travelled to different corners of the planet not just your small minded prison, get some friends that have blue eyes that are not materialistic and discuss this with them and listen to them laugh at your ill-founded claims. You need to open your mind to what is really important which is not what you ‘recon’ happened in the past are you mentally ill?
‘blue eyed devil’ derogatory term that I do not deserve on the basis I am not accountable for ruining the world like you are suggesting.
i read and absorbed all that,im impressed, one of the best things i have seen
i find all light blue eyed people to be,talkative, zealous, have an uncontrollable ability to absorbed information, even when not trying, materialistic, light blue eyed devils no,industrialist yes,i recon the gardens of babylon were due to light blue eyed people,i wonder if there will be a way to date when the first light blue eyed devil appeared on earth and worked toward giving us industrialization wealth via a disposition of being materialistic,we owe that ancestor a round of applause,
I’m a blued eyed devil and happen to be crap at absorbing information and have a non-materialistic ideaology. So don’t make over generalisatons based on crap you racist bastard
I happen to find blue eyes a genetic mutation of beauty, we blued eyed devils appear more sexy and seductive.
You in a shell.
A your used poor bible knowledge= christian
B you used recon=souther descent
C your racist,and didnt realize it=Afro-American
So I had very blue eyes until I was about 4 years old until they changed to green. My mom has brown eyes and my dad has blue. I’ve always wondered why my eye color changed so late. Any ideas?
There are multiple genes that control for eye color. The main gene is Brown dominant – blue recessive. The second gene is either Green dominant -blue recessive. So for your dad to have blue eyes, he has to have all blue versions as a single copy of either brown or green would lead him to have brown or green eyes. So he is bb-bb. Your mom has brown eyes, so I believe hers could be a number of combinations that would lead to your genotype BB-Gb or Bb-Gb. You inherited a copy of green from mom and blue from dad. Babies are born without the final say in eye color until the age of 3 or so, when the deposition of melanin finalizes. So your eyes started blue and changed to green as the melanin was deposited.
Ugh, so disappointing to see so many pointless creationist arguments in comments yet again. People will be having these arguments forever (and have been having them for long enough up until now), and somehow I doubt it’s to try and understand each other’s points of view.
Anyway, the articles interesting. I don’t know much about genetics, but I wonder if there’s any way to tell which brown-eyed people also come from that ancestor (apart from seeing whether they have any blue eyed relatives, that is) and I wonder what percentage of Caucasians (whatever their eye colour) have that blue-eyed human as their common ancestor.
Greetings
I am A negative blood type,my eye colour changes from blue to green and vice vercer.
God bless.
you might find it odd but many of the oddities you seem to disclose here are really products of infidelity.
carbon dating is a joke. understand stratigraphy and how the Cambrian Explosion Disproves Evolution (its facts not ideas) and shows the lie of carbon dating calculator how science and darwin and several others actually made up the lies to gain fame and fortune and also in the writings of darwin he discloses his goal to make the Bible a untrue. for the smart ones like me it did not work, i got the facts myself. do the same and do not believe evil liars in the science world.
you have been lied to and science makes money on lies like global warming and evolution. if your smart you would investigate what you believe instead of believing lies that are spoon feed to you! if you want to know about the changing heat patterns investigate h.a.a.r.p. the technology that shocks our atmosphere regularly just for fun. it has all but ruined the ozone layer. now your going to be blamed and pay for the destruction of the ozone layer! but stupid you believes the lies that your the cause and stupid your feels so good your doing your part to save the planet. what a joke you are. be informed your look stupid.
And whats the offering plate for u dumb f***,,,,Science is a trick, think about what u just said.
science will prove noah had these blue eyes. the brown eyes came from the wives of noahs sons. the wives were not of the pure good bloodline and that is why there is so much variations in brown.
noah was choosen for his faithfulness and he had not been corrupted with blood that came from mating with satanic beings, he was the only one God choose and his wife and sons and sons wives.
that is why 98% of all crimes are done by those who have brown eyes!
get the story right and quit lying to the people.
The article isn’t saying that only those with blue eyes are exclusively related to each other. Someone with blue eyes doesn’t have to have a sister who also has blue eyes. But it’s saying that everyone with blue eyes has the same common ancestor.
For example, if I were to say that all the girls in Mrs. Alba’s class scored over 85 on the last test, it doesn’t mean that there weren’t any boys who scored over 85 too. Just that every girl did. It’s not exclusive.
I thought you didn’t believe in science. Didn’t you say in an above comment not to believe the evil liars of science? If so, how can you say (and believe) now to your convenience, that science will prove noah had blue eyes?
And maybe, the reason why 98% of all crimes are done by those with brown eyes is because the percentage of those with blue eyes is very low to begin with?
If you want to talk statistics, then did you know that less than 1% of prison populations in the United States are atheist? Are you then suggesting that those with religion are morally less upright than those who don’t believe in God?
My eyes have been blue all my life and just last year they started turning green! What’s going on? It’s not just my surroundings they are actually turning green. Is there any way I can make my body produce the chemical for blue eyes again?
dip it in some paint
so i have a question that has been bothering me my whole life. so i am an african american 100% but when u think of it you think of someone darker skin dark hair and dark eyes right, well to a certain extent, but ok i have a really light complexion, blonde hair and blue eyes…..although i do take after my mom a whole lot but there is one thing different she has brown eyes and so did my father. so my question is how did i get blue eyes? no one in my family had blue eyes i have been up and down are family tree and no one i find had or has blue eyes. this is just one of those things that have been in the back of my mind…
Yes it is possible, my husband and I both have dark brown eyes, yet my youngest son has hazel green eyes and a much lighter skin than both of us.
It is simple genetics.
Blue eyes are recessive and don’t show up if there is a dominant gene present.
This means that your parents were both, if I may use the correct terminology, hybrids of Brown and blue Eyes.
This is written Bb
The following shows that it IS possible for you to have blue Eyes.
B__b_
B|BB|Bb|
b|Bb|bb|
BB means 100% brown hair
Bb means brown eyes but the blue eyes are present
bb means blue eyes
so you are one of four people who have bb when their parents have the gene Bb.
If you don’t understand look up the “Punnet Sqaure”.
Yes this tells me that the common ancestor of these white blue eyes devild was the son of Adam and he was marked with the mark of cain, therefore the blue eyed devils. It just maybe a possiblity
all i no for certain is a cleft chin is 100% inherited from ur father go figure. Found that out when i new my mother was a whore. lmao
Thank you so much, this was very interesting. I was actually born in Spain ( not telling you when though!) but was moved around europe and lastly settled in Britain when I was 6. I dont remember much of the few years I was in spain, but the delicious smell of spanish food always seems to ring a bell in me or something. It’s weird how I dont remember anything except the smells, isn’t it! I even found a website dedicated to spanish recipes, which gave me great delight and thought I ought to share. Anyway, thank you again. I’ll get my son to add your feed to my rss app…
What about herterochromic peoples like myself? One of my eyes is deep brown, whilst the other is contented being a green/brown/hazel sort of colour; but what if one of your eyes is blue and one is brown? I do tours on bullyings of Heterochromic persons such as myself and have seen a blue and brown eye more than once. Why would this be? If all blue-eyed people have an ansestor, surely heterochromia chanlenges this find.
Simply because all blue-eyed people share a common ancestor does not mean that breeding between blue-eyed and brown-eyed people did not occur. There is a (slightly)similar scenario in female calico cats. The sex chromosomes “X” and “Y” determine an individual’s gender. If one has two “X” chromosomes, they are female. If one has one “X” chromosome and one “Y” chromosome, they are male. In calico cats, the “X” chromosome also contains the gene for spot color. Because there really is no use for the second “X” chromosome the females posses, it is essentially turned off, although not in a uniform way across the body. This means that if the first “X” chromosome contains the gene for orange fur, and the second the gene for black fur, orange spots indicate follicles where the cells have turned off the second “X” chromosome, and vice-versa.
This is not to say that heterochromia is directly analogous to what I’ve just explained, but it does mean that heterochromia does not disprove Professor Eiberg’s research.
ok so then it should be possible to go back and find that one ancestor?right??And for all the sciene and religon stuff,I believe to each there own..and we will all find out one day if our believes are true!!
no you could not find that one ancestor the world does not have genealogies that go back that far….duh! that is just plain stupid.
That’s odd. Must be the same for green eyed people too.
why would it be the same for green eyed people? blue and green are different colors just like brown and blue are different colors. you cannot make that comparrison…duh!
So, I have big blue eyes- Me and my brown eyed sister don’t have the same ancestors? WTF? Bull shit, Hahaha!
ur so stupid, u and ur sister having different color eyes does not mean you dont have common ancestors, it just means she got different genes than you
you have not got the same farther.. lol ;)
That just means that you inherited the gene required to have blue eyes and she did not. Don’t be an idiot. Learn what your talking about before you try to disprove actual science with stupid, immature comments. Thanks.
i hope your third grade teacher didn’t see that comment.
hi you need help
well couldnt we consider humans as gods? we can create mass population cities, we can cross over water, we can destroy mountains, we can kill anything and everything, Humans can controll this planet and really we could control the universe, We massively effect everything around us.
is that seriously your “theory”? where did that come from? you have a very distorted spirituality…
I found it interesting when I read this comment: “…science and religion doesnt mix its not supposed to they are on total oppisites…”
On the contrary, science and religion are very much related; in fact, science can be used as evidence of Creation. For example, Saturn’s {unstable} rings are made up of ice fragments and rock – which are constantly being pulled into Saturn’s surface due to the gravitational pull of the planet; therefore, they will not last. If the solar system was billions of year old, don’t you think those rings would already be gone by now?
This is one of many examples that shows us how religion {more of Creationism} is related to science. We can use information that scientists – Creationists or Evolutionists – have gathered to support a solar system that was created thousands of years ago verses millions/billions of years ago. The evidence of a young solar system is out there, you just have to research it.
wow are you serious religion is a product of time and convineince. greek mythology is only a mythology because we dont believe in it anymore but back them zues was god of gods and so on…science however is what we use to determine what is real and what has happend with proof or else it is just a theory or a good bed time story
we think that greek mythology was fake, but 2000 years into the future what will they think of God or our “science” today.
By then I think Jesus will have returned. I pray that your heart is softened so that you may receive the truth.
amen, he will return soon. wide is the highway to destruction and the majority are on it. we can thank
our Lord we have been found! we pray for those here
who insist on believing lies. your blind and asleep.
your only hope is in Jesus or Yeshua as he is known in hebrew. He will save you if your call out to Him.
Jesus was a natural born Jew. He died so it’s impossible for him to be the savior! A requirement for the savior is that he must have accomplished certain things in his life. Jesus did not! Not trying to start any arguments but this is truly what I beleive in.
WOW YOU ARE SUCH A IDIOT! SCIENCE IS THEORY! OTHER WISE THIS GUY HAD TRACTED EVERY BLUE EYED PERSON IN THE WORLDS ANCESTORS! THAT IS IMPOSSIBLE! ALSO THE THEORY OF EVOLUTION! HELLO IT HAS THE WORD THEORY IN IT! SCIENC HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH FACTS! JUST EVIDENCE!
you have a vocabulary problem. mythology IS mythology, we do not think it is anything but mythology. however, myth does not mean “lie.” The ancient greeks worshipped their gods and goddesses just like your grandma goes to church every sunday. your grandmother does not think the church teaches mythology, the church teaches religion. to the ancient greeks, what we call mythology was their religion.
coookoooo. crazy. so carbon dating is just made up? scientists have been carbon dating human remains back over 4 million years ago? made up?
A true scientist will say there are laws, theories, and hypothesis. Find me a scientist that says carbon dating is a law. Carbon dating is a theory not a fact
Well, yeah, theoretically, but how long does it take for the ring’s orbit to deteriorate? And further, how is that evidence of ‘creationism’?
“We can use information that scientists โ Creationists or Evolutionists โ have gathered to support a solar system that was created thousands of years ago verses millions/billions of years ago.” — There’s hypotheses, yes. However, there’s far more overwhelming evidence to the contrary (take an astronomy class).
Without getting to much into Quantum Physics, Gravity is theorized as a particle called a ‘Graviton’. Of the four fundamental forces of the universe (Strong/weak nuclear force, electromagnetism, and gravity), it’s considered the strongest. This may seem confusing, seeing as how just about everything on the planet is capable of overcoming gravity on a daily basis. However, we’re still affected by stellar objects billions of light years away through their gravitational pull (such as the Super massive Black Hole at the center of the Milky Way).
Religion is an organized structure based around faith; and faith means accepting something that you cannot prove (that’s why it’s called faith). Science, on the other hand, is a very strict process of hypothesizing and finding proofs.
Creationism has nothing to do with Science — and here’s why: Creationists make conjectures based on science and conclude that there ‘must’ be an intelligent designer, when they cannot *directly* prove that there is one, which is faith; not fact. Tachyons are more plausible than an Intelligent Designer.
You are completely wrong, gravity is the weakest force by a lot.
gravity is the weakest force.
go and burn people alive, god’bot! is god mad at me, money will solve that.. >=[
money will not save your soul. hell is real, why not approach it like a science and read the near death experiences of atheist?
you will find the information disproves all you think is real
I disagree with the comments above, however the article does touch on a few of this.
the first person with blue eyes must of been classified as a witch lol
They are killing albinos in Africa selling there bones for witch potions.
or a very special person! good not evil
you must be classified as a historian…
Science is the universal truth.office cleaning chicago
Actually, we all have two ancestors- Adam and Eve! But close, close.
You do know that God created more humans than just Adam and Eve…they were just the only ones in Eden and they are the ancestors of Joseph (the man who adopted Jesus or Nazareth). All the races didnt come from just two peiple. Plus whenever Cain is sent away and marries he’s not marring his sister.
P.S not trying to sound all preachy or anything, just blabbering :P
Jacob married his cousin as directed by God. Adam’s first wife was Lilith.
thank you for knowing lillith was adams 1st wife most christians dont accept or admit that so thanks 4 putting the real truth out there
wasn’t lillith evil….That makes since that she would be a first wife.
Since their is no god everyones theory on this is bull.
People are stubborn. If we needed a scientific method for everything in our lives, how would we survive. How do we know there is no god. What proof can science give for anything at the moment. If I said that the aliens everyone is talking about could be the god or gods of the past, then should you still worship them? If I said that they are watching us right now and know everything we do because their technology is so advanced that our information goes directly into their database, then what would you say to dispute the fact that you should worship, and if all you know is passed down knowledge then why should you dispute it. The naturul thing for humans to do is deny aything that they have been told
God is real if not explain how we are here
science has proven prayer works……… read the facts.
i guess thats all coincidence to you though. you will find some way to discredit that too.
that’s lame how do you explain dinosaurs?
thank you science and religion doesnt mix its not supposed to they are on total oppisites of the spectrum
science was created by god, so deal with it!
AMEN
The bible and science are very intertwined. It is this age of intellectual narcissism that people are blind to the truths that can be found in the bible and other ancient texts that actually reveal truth and reiterate scientific theory. It is the perversion of the truth through religious tradition and dogma that lead people to thing they are contradictory.
lol thats kind of funny because i’m christian and i want to be a astronomer
God isn’t real you spackers! It’s just some story made up before the police and justice courts to make people behave themselves. 55% of Americans (I’m not an American thank God-see what I did there?) believe that the Bible is a true and accurate, historical account! WTF?! This is the reason why most Americans are dense and think all Muslims are terrorists bla bla. Look at it this way, we tell kids there’s a Santa watching them so that they be good little sh*ts for mummy and daddy. Same for adults and religion! The sooner everyone drops the whole “my God is better than your Allah” rubbish, we will all see that science made us through years of evolution and we will stop fighting in the name of religion and just pure hate each other because of what country you come from! Like the French, they could all be Buddhist for all I care I’d still hate ’em!
that would mean that we were all inbred, many problems would arise from marrying your sisters or brothers and would be apparent today if that were true
don’t know if you’re the same “anonymous” as above who blasted Americans. But i’d put $ on the fact that if you’re european dumbass could get residency in the U.S you’d be first in line. Or maybe you’re one of those people who loves living under a feudal system… you don’t have to strive to achieve, you wait for your neighbors to work hard so you can get your government handout. and crappy handout at that. ask your goverment to teach you dental hygiene, your teeth are crappy, and your breath smells like someone’s dirty ass. and in general, you people need to learn to shave, bathe and occassionally brush and floss.
European dumbass? i’d call that racism mate.
marrying your sister doesn’t do anything, having sex with your sister does.
thats Adam and Eve story is bull shit
yo mama
I read a man took his wife to court because she d had a blue eyed child they both had brown eyes
I sw a thing where an african couple had a white baby with curly blond hair and blue eyes…=)
A blue-eyed child can come from parents who both have brown eyes. Blue eyes are recessive therefore if you have one brown eye gene and one blue eye gene, you will have brown eyes but, you are still a carrier. If two people who have brown eyes have a child together, there is a 25% chance it will have blue eyes. All it takes is for both parents to pass on the blue eye gene and not the brown eye gene.
I suppose if a couple who both had blue eyes had a brown-eyed baby, then there would be cause for concern…However, I think it’s ridiculous when people expect their children to look like them…they can end up anywhere in the spectrum…
Stat’s just silly. I was born with true grey eyes and my parents both have brown eyes. My paternal was test done when I was 6 years old as a result of an injury and states that my father is 100% biologically my true father! So I did a little research of my own and discovered that 1 in every 500 children born to parents with brown eyes are born with different coloured eyes. The millions of kids that are born out there every day a few hundred are born with different coloured eyes! So it’s common enough!
@BriBri & Andrew: My family also has an interesting mix of appearances. One grandmother had honey colored hair and bright turquoise eyes, medium fair skin. Her husband had black eyes, black hair and golden tobacco color skin year round. Their 4 children: One blue eyed light blonde who tanned, two dark skinned, dark haired, dark eyes, one dark skinned, brown hair, lighter eyes.
My other grandmother had black hair, black eyes, odd colored skin that looked greenish grey but tanned very dark if she got the least amount of sun. Her husband had blue eyes and dark brown hair with light skin. Their children: one had black hair, dark eyes and skin. The other had charcoal brown hair and hazel green eyes that could look grass green, greenish brown, amber brown & rarely blueish grey with his mother’s skin that tanned dark copper. With all that dark hair, eyes & skin I got grey blue eyes, brindle hair (light blondish, light & dark brown, cinnamon, some black that bleaches reddish gold in southern climes & that bleached to a strawberry blonde when I was a kid) and ridiculous pale skin that shows every vein and becomes lobster colored with the least amount of heat or sun. Full compliment of freckles that not one of my cousins or sister has! (My sister was mistaken for African American by African Americans in Virgina, my mother mistaken for Mexican by Californian Chicanos). Family origins mainly from the British Isles, plus Mechlenburg, pre-Germany Swabia & Black Forest, some Dutch & Swiss who migrated via a few generations in France, a Jewish line, and possibly a Hispanic and eastern European factor in there based on inscriptions on an old family tintype and another old photo. My family surely exemplifies the great American melting pot. I get a kick out of the fact that 2 of my 4 grandparents had the rarest eye color (not counting violet & red), & which is my favorite. [Sorry my post is so long].
I believe my grandparents on my mother’s side, both had brown eyes and every one of the children except my mother the oldest, my father’s parents were gray eyed father and brown eyed mother. so he is blue eyed. My siblings and I are all blue eyed, however, my father ,my oldest sister and i all have a brown spot in the lower right iris, very noticeable, but no explanation
They should open a restaurant:}
So 10,000 years ago there were no blue eyes?
Sounds like someone made it with a wolf! i wondered why my back was so hairy lol. Hard to believe we came from one common ancestor, I guess all you need is one!
Haven’t you seen 10,000BC…the blue eyed girl ;)
So what if your grandfather has blue eyes but you have brown does that mean you are related to all the blue eyes people as well?
Yes, but it just means that the OCA2 gene in your eyes did not turn “off” so to speak.
Yes, the blue eye gene is recessive to the brown eye gene and green eyes are recessive to both! This means you have to have two blue eye genes or a blue eye gene and a green eye gene to have blue eyes. I’m guessing most OR all caucasians have that same blue-eyed common ancestor….
So, if a person has just one blue-eyed ancestor, no matter how far back, then they are a decendant of that first blue-eyed human….
Um… You repeated yourself in the first paragraph author.
so my girlfriend told me tht her eyes r normally a dark borwn color but anytime time she is around me or we talk on the phone her eyes turn a greenish color and i want to know y so can somebody plz answer this this thanks
She’s a liar?
you need help
my girlfriend says that her eyes r normally dark brown but when she is around me or talks to me on the phone they turn a greenish color and i want to know y
thank you very nice post thanks…admin
Ok, my Grandmother is a very small lady, she has very curly ringlet hair, which is naturally black, she has an almost flat nose with no ridge in it, she also brown eyes, but her skin is pale. her father had bright blue eyes with black straight hair and is very very short and has quite a big bridge in his nose, but very pale skin, but her mother had very curly black hair and is quite tall, with olive skin, and also a flat nose. but her brother had red curly hair, and was tall. Thing is, i have traced the family back quite far, and no sign of anybody coming from a different country, especially my grandmothers father, all born in the UK. and my grandmother has no memory of her mother as she died at childbirth, and she would really like to find out for sure where her foreign look comes from. Anybody got any idea??
Also, My grandmothers mother had very curly hair, and sodoes my grandmother, but after my grandmother, none of the girls have curky hair, its only the boys, is there a reason that only the males have taken on the curly hair, and it has skipped the females??
And my father and his brothers have dark skin, flat noses and very curly hair, and my fathers sisters have straight blonde hair and blue eyes.. although that could possible come from my grandfather. but i have very curly hair, but my sister has dead straight hair, real strange.
This is just a guess but, I’m thinking that maybe curly hair is recessive and since women have two x (XX) chromosomes and men have one x and one y (XY) the second x covers up the gene? This would be because the extra tag on the x chromosome is where the gene is located and the y chromosome doesn’t have this tag and therefore no gene to cover it up…this is just like baldness (which is passed by the mother) and colour-blindness (which is FAR more common in males than females).
the x is the butt and the y is the dick
so everyone in my family is light haired with paper white skin and blue eyes, i on the other hand have dark skin all year round, brown hair and black eyes! blood tests show that my parents are indeed my parents so whats up with me?
hi its time time i need help
some people need help men ………………..like?
If it hasn’t been said here before, random mutations of eye color still happen today, so not all blue eyed people have a single common ancestor. They come from many ancestors…
Your mother did not have an affair. Think about it this way: we all have two parents who carry both dominant *and* recessive (non-visible) traits, four grandparents and eight great-grandparents who contribute to your genetic makeup, and so on and so on, all with both dominant and recessive traits, and all of which combine to make *you*. From the sound of it, you got your height from your dad, and your curly hair and complexion were a mix of recessive traits on your Italian side that go back a few generations. I’ve met plenty of people who look nothing like either of their parents, and some siblings with exactly the same parents look nothing like each other.
It sounds like you’re disappointed by the way you look, but when it comes to appearence there’s a great quote that goes roughly like this: “beauty is like hosting. There comes a point where you just have to enjoy your own party, otherwise what’s the point? Worrying too much about it spoils all the fun.”
And is that single ancestor a child of brown eyed parents ?
how he develop genes?
We’ve been moving around on this planet for a long time. Wars, shipwrecks (Spanish Armada comes to mind) and all kinds of diasporas lost to recorded history. And finally some acknowledgment that Neanderthals remain in our blood. Don’t let petty parochial prejudices blind you to the richness of human history.
does anyone know if the very pale blue-eyed folk from Michoacan/Morelia were tested to see if they share the ancestor? it’s a recessive trait which comes out as extremely pale blue – almost white. there are tales of them from back in aztec time, so i don’t think that it is a product of european descent since the conquistadores time.
im not a scientist or anything but, my family on my moms side including myself all have very pale almost white eyes and we’ve traced our family history for other reasons and as far back as we’ve gone our ancestors are all european. so i do belive that the resesive trait could be from both areas.
dont no bout the Michoacan/morelia people but do no that the vikings are thought to have traveled more extesivly than and much earlier than previosly thought n there are myths in many north american tribes. check out the madocc tribes n the cherokee r thought to b jewish. the toltecs also have a blue eyed indian myth. very interesting. good luck
If all people with blue eyes share the same common ancestor… than what describe people who have green eyes and/or hazel eyes?
Interesting, perhaps those people with green eyes have common ancestor too.
Hi Anonymous –
It is very possible to not look like your parents. There was even a case in South Africa a while back (a sad story, really w/Apartheid and all), where a couple, who were both fair-skinned Caucasians, had a child, and she had African facial features and light-medium brown skin. She was 100% their child, so what must’ve happened is that at some point, somewhere along the path of their lineage, some of the family’s offspring came from one black parent.
You’re just a mish-mash of genes of your ancestors. They come out in different arrangements, so it’s not that weird for a kid to not resemble their parents. Brown hair/skin/eyes is the default human color, so those are often dominant traits. Oftentimes, the physical features you get are actually from your Grandparents. I don’t recall exactly why, but there’s a valid scientific explanation.
Even in my family, there’s variation: I have dark blonde hair, steel-blue eyes, and ruddy pale skin. And I’m a quarter Sicilian! haha Can’t tan to save my life. One of my brothers has light-medium brown hair, average generic white person skin, and medium-dark blue eyes, another brother has brown hair, pale skin, and hazel eyes, and my sister has dark brown hair, somewhat tan skin, and brown eyes. All of us came from a mother with medium brown hair, non-ruddy white skin, and hazel/green eyes and a father with dark brown hair, brown eyes, and pale skin that tans really dark.
So maybe you are a “genetic throwback”, but so is EVERYONE in your family, haha. Don’t sweat it! :)
Lady,
You put too much value into fair skinned and blonde etc. Get a grip! Stick up for the original caucasoid type – brown hair n eyes!
I am three parts italian/sicilian with one quarter irish/german and look
nothing like either of my parents. My mother is paper white with freckles and auburn slight wavy hair, 5’1. My dad is light olive toned with dark slight curly brown hair, 5’9. I on the other hand look like I’m “mixed” with something or other and have dealt with teasing and taunting as a child to the now “What ethnicity are you ?” questions. I was born at home and have pictures of the event to rule out adoption. I have my father’s blood type and my mother’s absolute denial of any outside source of genetic material. So why do I have dark tanned skin all year round with no defined bridge to my nose, I’m 5’7, and have hair that is so curly/course/frizzy that I have to use relaxers just to tame it? I have been asked if I was part black/mexican/hawaian/middle eastern etc…
the rest of my family looks white or italian. I myself married a tall, blonde, fair skinned man and two of my children are fair/blonde/hazel eyes and only one has dark hair and brown eyes with light olive skin. People do double takes when I’m out in public with my children (without my husband) and one of the “white” kids calls me Mom. I must look like I’m babysitting.
Please explain why this happens, my family has deemed me the “genetic throwback”, is that possible?
No, your mother had an affair.
No, your mother had an affair — or your mother was compromised, and the father u know is a very, very good man.
Mutation? Sometimes offspring have new traits that where not in the genomes of either parent.
Either that or prof. jeff’s explanation, which sounds considerably more likely.
Your look likely comes from an African ancestor! My history is a bit rusty but back in the 1400’s(?) The Moors invaded Italy and Spain, producing biracial offspring. I also have a sister with African-like hair. (We are Italian American as well). In fact, my entire family has dark hair and blue eyes.
My father has blue eyes. My mother has brown eyes. My sister (child 1) has blue eyes (dark brown hair/dark skin). My brother (child 2) has blue eyes (blonde hair/fair skin/beard grows in red). I (child 3) have brown eyes (that are becoming more green than brown as I age) (reddish brown hair/fair skin). Father is Irish/Dutch decent. Mother is English/English descent.
My husband has hazel eyes/dark skin/dark curly hair. Son #1 has brown eyes/fair skin/dark curly hair. Daughter (child 2) has violet blue eyes/dark skin/honey curly hair. Son #2 (child 3) has brown eyes/fair skin/dark curly hair.
It is the luck of the draw with genetics. Why do my sons have my eyes and my skin, but their father’s hair? (except they also have red that grows in their beards, like my father and brother have, but not my husband). Where did my daughter’s funky cameleon eyes come from? If she wears blue, they are blue. If she wears purple, they are purple. If she wears green, they are green (and no, if she wears yellow they aren’t yellow, they are blue).
Why did my sister get blue eyes and tan skin, while my only hope of a tan was if all my freckles ran together?
Luck of the draw.
Genetics are fairly easy on eye and hair color. (for blue and brown eyes/blond and brown hair that is.)
Every gen has it’s copy. One from you mother, and one from you father.
A blue eye person has 2 times the same gen: bb
a Brown eye person can have mulitple genetic codes: bB/BB/Bb
brown is domiant above blue.
so:
Brown: B
blue: b
If you follow this rule, it is impossible to have a brown eye-ed kid from blue eye parents.
However, there are a few execpations: A rare gen of blue, that is dominant above brown. This can result in eyes that have 3 colors: brown on the outside, green in the middle, blue on the inside.
But it can also result in completly bleu eyes, making it possible for 2 blue eye parents to have a brown eye kid.
For hair color: brown is domiant over blond
Brown: B
blond: b
So if you are blond, you have 2 times the same gen: bb
brown people can have a ‘hidden’ gen of blond: Bb.
So if 2 brown haired people have a hidden gen, they can have a blond haired kid.
I hope this makes sence to you!
People, please stop with the ignorant comments (example – OMG – i have different eyes than my father thus my mother must have cheated…) and go read a scientific journal or book to get your facts straight.
My husband and I both have blue eyes and our son has brown eyes. Is that possible? My mom has brown eyes and my dad has blue. My husbands parents both have blue eyes.
Something is amiss, Melissa. Two people with blue eyes have a 0% chance of having brown eyed children.
There have been paternity dispute cases that have used this fact as resonable doubt for DNA testing.
Either your son doesn’t truly have “brown” eyes, or he isn’t the biological son of your husband if he is your biological child.
melissa, don’t take notice of what sunny is saying! yes its perfectly possible that your son has brown eyes! remember that nature is constantly shuffling our genes

It could also be an other rare gen: a brown that is not domiant.
It’s more likly the gen above, I know several people (2 people in my personaly life, and some other cases in literature) With the dominant blue gen.
ok, now how can you be so sure about people having blue eyes? like the above comment asked “if he and his wife has hazel eyes, would they also have kids with the same eye color?? if its this way the what about the hair, if me and my wife have brown kind of hair will we have kids with natural blonde hairs??
easy.
brown hairs are domiant above blond hair. Meaning: you and you wife have one gen for brown hair, making you hair brown. But the other gen is most likly one for blond hair.
(every gen has one copy, one form you mother and one from you father)
Because of this, it is fairly easy for a ‘blond gen’ to be passed serval generations before it has the chance to show itself again.
You know this why??
You can’t say someones cheating just because of their eye color. Actually, the genetics a person can get can go back MANY MANY years. He might have the eyes of his great-great grandpa? Or maybe another ansestor way way back. The child dosen’t HAVE TO look like either parent either. Get the facts straight first before you accuse someone of cheating.
My son and his wife both have hazel eyes and their son has blue. She did not cheat because he is the spitting image of his father and really doesn’t look like her at all. Wait…maybe he cheated and she’s not the mother!!
yea he is definitly cheating if u have blue eyes n he does to its impossible for ur kind to have brown eyes use ur brain
he is cheating on you duh
Eye color can be due to genetics, but it can also come about as a result of teratogens (foreign agents that enter the prenatal environment and disrupt gestation). This is what creates the well-known one blue / one brown combination in people like David Bowie and Gracie Burns. They actually have two dominant genes (i.e., brown/brown), but one eye becomes “infected” with some teratogen and its ability to produce melanin is inhibited. People like to find “exceptions” to rules, but in this case it’s not really much of an exception.
The other explanation is quite obvious, but I won’t make any accusations for fear I’ll cause a divorce.
My husband has dark Teal colored eyes, and I have extremely light Dresden Blue eyes, and we had three children, all of them have Brown eyes. One of them has Brown-Green eyes, but they all are considered to have Brown eyes. I was blonde till I was in my twenties, and my husband had dark brown hair, all of our children have dark brown hair.
It’s perfectly possible for something like that to happen with hair color.
I know someone, who’s hair started with brown, then became blond, and later became ginger. This person also has the same thing going on with her eye color: first blue, then brown, and then green.
my own hair has it’s fun too. I was first a blond, then became brown, later black, and now it’s blond again.
It’s a strange thing, mainly caused by hormons. Genetics work though hormons; By a defect, or the work of an other gen, It’s possible for people the change hair and eye color.
For most of us, this stops after puberty, when the hormones find a correct balance. However, if it’s caused by a different gen, it’s possible that this goes on for the rest of your life.
My husband has dark Teal colored eyes, and I have extremely light Dresden Blue eyes, and we had three children, all of them have Brown eyes. One of them has Brown-Green eyes, but they all are considered to have Brown eyes. I was blonde till I was in my twenties, and my husband had dark brown hair, all of our children have dark brown hair.
no, she cheated
Eh?
Brown eyed parents can of course have blue eyed children but thats because they have the gene for blue eyes in their genotype. Their grandparents or parents or any relative of the sort HAD had to have blue eyes in order for their children to have blue eyes which is a result of a recessive gene. If both parents have the genotype Bb Bb, brown would show up in their eyes (lowercased b inherited from parents) but through a 25% chance that their offspring would have bb then the child would have blue eyes. The blue eyed gene had have to come from somewhere for the newborn to have blue eyes, therefore proving that all blue eyed humans share a common ancestor. So this theory is true. (This is just a response proving to someone that this theory is indeed true)
Brown eyed parents can (and often do) have blue eyed children. Blue eyed parents are not likely (if it’s even possible?) to have brown eyed children.
Yah, having a certain color of hair or skin or eyes can be a sexual advantage. However, blue eyes are not that big of an advantage when it comes to attract a mate. Not all people are attracted to blue eyes. Not all people are attracted to fair skin. Every person is attracted to different things, and genetics can play a role in what someone is attracted to but experiences and situations in that persons life plays a role too. A blue eyed girl may not have an advantage over a green eyed or brown eyed girl if that particular male is more attracted to green eyes or brown eyes, or darker colors in general. Most men are attracted to tan skin these days, blue eyed people are rarely tan. Therefore tan people have an advantage over fair people. On the other hand some men like fair women. In general the sexual attraction thing between coloring evens out. We are diverse in our looks and diverse in what we are attracted to. So, yes I would say that blue eyes is definitley a neutral mutation. It may be useful in certain circumstances but not all, therefore it is neutral. Developing a bigger sized brain, well see that is not neutral because its what put us at the top of the food chain. However, blue eyed people arent at the top of the sex chain.
blue is recessive and brown is dominant…..there would be a zero percent chance of having a blue eyd child.
That is true in most cases. But there are several cases that have a domiant blue, and a ressive brown.
So it is possible.
blue is recessive and brown is dominant…..there would be a zero percent chance of having a blue eyd child.
No, that means nothing. If a brown eyed person (with all brown eyes in ancestry) and a blue eyed person (with all blue eyed ancestors) have a child, that child has a 1 in 4 chance of having blue eyes.
My moms eyes are blue, and my dads eyes are brown. Since brown is dominate does that mean something’s up? Dont flame me im a child ;P
I am a Louisiana Creole (African/French/Spanish/Native AMerican)whose family consists of blue-eyed blonde Scandinavian looking persons. With persons of mixed heritage you never know what you will get. Some of my blue-eyed cousins do not even have a parent or grandparent with lightcolored eyes so in my opinion, blue eyes are not necessarily recessive.
CBS Sunday Morning show did a piece about this new discovery about the Blue Eyed gene and its ancestor. They said the ancestor originated from Europe.
Also, just because someone has brown or green or even gray eyes doesnt mean that their children cannot have a totally different either recessive or dominant eye color. The reason for this is learned in biology in highschool. Although someone might be born with brown eyes, somewhere along the line in their family, someone might have green or blue eyes. If that brown eyed person meets someone else who has blue eyes or green eyes, or they could even just be a carrier of blue or green eyes, at least one out of 4 potential children will have green or blue eyes, despite one or both parents having dominant brown eyes. It could be a 25% chance or a 50% chance that one child might be born with blue or green eyes. It all depends on the carrier genes and how strong they are, like if two recessive (which is blue) meet up, they dominate and a child born of them will be blue eyed, but if a dominate brown and recissive blue meet up, brown will dominate and one child born of them will be brown eyed, but if the brown eyes parent has a recessive blue carrier gene, another child born of them will be blue eyed.
Also, this carrier concept applies to other traits such as hair color, whether or not you have a hitch hikers thumb, whether or not you can twist you tongue and height. I am very short as are both of my brother despite having a father of 6’1. Our mother is slightly shorter than we are. So, it seems that somewhere in my father’s irish riddled family, there was a dominate short gene that carried on through my father, despite his parents and his sister and brother being tall, and when it met with my mother’s dominate short gene (despite her father being 5’9 (with her mother being as short as we), it produces three short children. However, should we, carrying the tall gene, have children with someone who is tall and or carries the tall gene with them as we do, at least one child will be tall.
It does seems confusing, and perhaps someone else could have explained better, but that’s the best I could do at the moment. :D
Hope that helps. Byee!
Blue eyes came to dominate in certain areas because those populations were geographically isolated. This allowed the recessive gene for blue eyes to be expressed with progressively increasing frequency within a limited population. Unlike early Christian paternalism, primitive Scandinavian cultures have traditionally allowed females to choose their own spouses. No doubt, blue-eyed women preferred to mate with blue-eyed men, as is still the case today. Over time, even a slight preference for blue on blue pairings would have resulted in a progressively increasing percentage of blue-eyed people.
Science prioritizes simpler explanations to more complex ones. A neutral mutation at one site in many different people, given the current set of facts, can be explained by having a single mutation, so why go with two?
This is known as the principle of parsimony. It explains why, when you lose your wallet, you don’t look on the moon. Instead, you look at where you’ve been. Because a scenario where you lost your wallet where you’ve been is much more probable than the one in which it ended up on an extra-terrestrial body.
Scientists aren’t the only one’s who use the principle of parsimony. It’s a good practical heuristic. Not always true, but choosing between a simple and more complicated hypothesis, we prefer to go with the simpler.
The phenomenon arises not because it’s hard to think outside of a linear path. (I can come up with a thousand possible explanations for why something like this happened — and so can you.) It arises because we like to choose an explanation and with a rational rule.
Motoo Kimura, the evolutionary biologist who developed the neutral theory of gene mutation, showed that you don’t need selective advantage to become pervasive. Some neutral genes increase in frequency to become universal, some neutral genes are just extinguished. It’s just a demographic phenomenon.
Also, 10,000 years is a pretty long time (500 generations-ish). Think of the potential number of offspring in that time — Starting with one couple, assuming each generation averaged 2 kids per generation, that’s 2 to the power of 500 more people than are on the planet (by a lot). Not to diminish they’re importance, but there really aren’t that many people with blue eyes.
Last note, be careful about using words like dominance in this context, since it’s a term of art.
How did blue eyes come to dominate in certain areas if there was only one common ancestor and blue is a recessive gene?
It’s still a bit vague about who this common ancestor is. My dad’s family is from Sicily and we all have blue eyes. My irish cousins all have blue eyes too.
So someone 10,000 years ago was quite the traveling ho! LOL.
i was wondering when you were going to post physical descriptions of every member of your family…
in terms of eye color, blue, green, hazel, yellow, etc. are all the same thing. Instead of “blue eyes” they could be saying “light-colored eyes”
I was told brown eyes are dominant. My father had brown eyes, my mother blue. How many offsprings would my mother have to give birth to before me and sister who both had blue eyes were outnumberd by brown eyed syblings?

I have the most beautiful blue eyes ever…almost like a turquoise color – very unique…I have been complemented on it a lot. I am of Friesen (Northern Holland descent) on both side of my parents. Both my parents have blue eyes. My mothers’ mother had brown eyes while her father had blue. My dad’s mother had blue eyes while his father had brown. I have six other siblings and they all have blue eyes. I am very fair and blonde. My mom’s brother who has brown eyes married a dutch brown eyed women. Three of their kids are brown eyed, brown haired, and one boy is very blonde with blue eyes. Just very interesting how genetics plays a role here…I married a German green-eyed man and my oldest son has green eyes and brown hair, while my younger son has blue eyes, very fair skinned and blonde.
*woosh*
ok he did a study! wahoo..! i think it explains a lot. and if brown eyed people (such as myself) are to stupid to realize the difference between gene codes and being adopted then you shouldn’t be reading this should you!
“Also it’s pretty common to call something “neutral” when it has no direct adaptive value even when it *is* strongly selected for by sexual selection (the phenomenon which drove the evolution of the brilliantly flashy but anti-adaptive peacock tail).”
That doesn’t make sense. Peacock tails (or blue eyes) aren’t “anti-adaptive”. If there’s sexual selection inferring some advantage towards reproduction and passing on your genes, i’d say it’s adaptive! I think it’s interesting he’s found the specific mutation and estimated the time line, but i think the rest of what he’s saying about it being a neutral mutation is complete crap.
My mom has brown eyes. My dad has blue. The first kid my sister had blue. I was second i have hazel they sorta change between blue gray and green. The third kid my brother has bown. the next kid my brother had brown. And the last kid my sister had brown. I did notice that my sister first born with blue eyes has blondish brown hair. I had cold black hair(I had the indian gens in me show more) and darker thicker skin. Tan easy. The rest of the kids with the brown eyes all had started out with blondes hair and as they aged it turn to dark brown. I wonder if the hair color and eye color have any thing to do with each other.
i think this study is very interesting and am certin in the future we will dicover what the true meaning of this trait is. im not one for science, never really did it for me. though i will say there are some facts that cant be ignored. im not of a specfific religon but i think we will find in the far off future that this trait has significant bearing in the world of religon.
compasion and empathy gone awrye…
i think as Carl Jung speperated the human race with his studies that this may very well play into his “theories” as he would praise HSP (highly sensitive persons) and i quote “condemn them in the next. At the same time, their differentness is not visible, potentially
increasing the sense of carrying a secret and being an imposter while others think
they are รขโฌลnormalรขโฌย due to their persona skills, already described.”
youre an idiot
I have dark brown eyes. My dad has honey brown eyes. My mom has almost black eyes (She is Filipino). My dad’s parents both had dark blue eyes. My mom’s parents both have almost black eyes. My husband has blue eyes his parents and grandparents all have blue eyes. Both of my children have blue eyes. Can anyone tell me how this can be? I get confused and I had Biology as a freshman in college.
Some people are born with brown, green, or hazel eyes that fade to blue as they age. To me this suggests that the genetic changes responsible for introducing blue eyes may be varied. Some people with blue eyes may be born without the requisite melanin and others may have experienced a rapid loss of the pigment, even pre-natally. Since blue eyes can be caused either way it seems more than one genetic variant could be at work.
I thought green eyes were the result of yellow fat deposits in blue eyes. So if you and your sibling have green eyes, and your parents have blue eyes, it’s probably because you’re fat.
The gene for blue eyes might co-occur with some other gene (better ability to tolerate the cold, for instance), and might dominate a gene pool simply by piggy-backing on that other gene which *is* selected for.
Also it’s pretty common to call something “neutral” when it has no direct adaptive value even when it *is* strongly selected for by sexual selection (the phenomenon which drove the evolution of the brilliantly flashy but anti-adaptive peacock tail).
In short, blue eyes could have dominated via sexual selection alone.
wonder why the author makes the point that blue eyes are a neutral mutation – going from a single individual to complete dominance over a large geographical area (Nordic countries) in 10,000 years doesn’t sound like the result of genetic drift to me.
I’m with the last comment there. It is very likely for the mutation to repeat itself on multiple non-related incidences and not have to stem from ONE person.
It is still hard to think outside of the linear path and consider that nature is very dynamic and more like a multi-to-multi system than a one-to-many system.
Is there not a possibility that “a genetic mutation affecting the OCA2 gene” could have occured at another time and place, meaning that there would be more than one ancestor?
If that distant ancestor had utilized a condom-like device we wouldn’t have to put up with those blue-eyed devils today in the land of La Raza.
Back to Europe you foreign devils. La Raza is taking back our land.
This is the age of the Chicano/a and you white devils will be shoved out.
Not disagreeing with the other comments made—some I downright agree with. รขโฌยฆBut when will the rest of the scientific fields take the time to know what the hell they are talking about? There isnรขโฌโขt anything magical about genes, they are nothing more than instructions for coding proteins.
The nearly infinite factors that influence this protein production aside, eye color isnรขโฌโขt some binary, digital trait. Itรขโฌโขs not like the pigment is 1) on 2) offรขโฌยฆand there are so many cells in the iris that are responsible for colorรขโฌโeach one may be governed by a different gene or set of genes for that matter. Remember the Afghani girl on the cover of National Geographic? Like that.
Get over yourselves, act more like scientists and less like tabloid journalists.
Oh for crying out loud, tell me that you did not just introduce Jungian garble into a discussion about allelic frequencies and phenotypic expression. Heck why not throw some Freud in there while youรขโฌโขre at it, genetic reduction in the amount of melanin produced as a conversion disorder!
Youรขโฌโขd think after 150 years the days of you people giving the rest of behavioral psychology a bad name would be over. Maybe you can bring Phrenology back as a discipline if you try really hard! :)
/facepalm
who cares, people having a cry cos they don’t have blue eyes, ohhh im not special cos i’m not mentioned on a science blog, why don’t i have blue eyes?? so on so forth. Doesn’t mean you’re adopted.. but then one can’t rule that out. relax a bit. it’s interesting stuff though. especially to a blue eyed person such as myself. be good if they could pin point where the ancestor hailed from.
Wait… so does that mean… if two blue eyed people get married… is that incestuous of them?
