Researchers have discovered a new link between human and machine learning. In human cognition, conceptual categories have long been modeled as convex regions. Now, Tetkova et al. show that a similar pattern emerges in AI. During self-supervised pretraining, AI models develop convex conceptual regions—and the more convex these regions become, the better the model performs on specialized tasks during supervised fine-tuning.
