A friend sent me a Substack note last week that read almost like a chant: walking lowers cortisol, lifting raises testosterone, stretching releases trauma, dancing regulates your nervous system, movement isn’t punishment for what you ate, it’s medicine for how you feel. Something in me softened at it, and something else in me, the part that spends its days checking other people’s data before I trust my own, immediately wanted to know whether each claim actually holds up the way it’s stated.
I should say upfront that I’m a psychology researcher, not a physician or an exercise scientist, so what follows is a literature check rather than medical guidance.
Some of the four claims held up better than I expected. One of them is carrying a lot more cultural weight than the evidence currently supports.
Lifting and testosterone: true within minutes, murkier by the month
This one is real, with an asterisk that almost never survives the retelling. Resistance training reliably produces an acute testosterone spike, and the effect has been measured directly: a study of junior weightlifters found levels rising from roughly 16 to 21 nmol/L within five minutes of finishing a lifting session. That part of the claim is well established, and it holds across different populations, with somewhat smaller spikes in older men.
What doesn’t hold up as cleanly is the version of the claim people actually want to be true, which is that lifting regularly raises your baseline testosterone over the long term. The acute rise fades within minutes to hours, and the long-term data is far less consistent: most studies find that resting testosterone looks similar in people who train regularly and people who don’t. Lifting changes your hormones for a window of time. It doesn’t appear to reset your baseline the way the slogan implies.
Walking and cortisol: the best-supported claim on the list
Of the four, this is the one I’d bet on most confidently. A 12-week trial that put elderly women through three weekly walking sessions found a statistically significant drop in morning cortisol by the end of the program. The same study found a significant interaction effect on an inflammation marker (hs-CRP) across the groups, though the drop within the walking group specifically didn’t reach statistical significance on its own. The study’s authors, working out of a South Korean research group, attributed the change to an improved stress response built up gradually over the twelve weeks, not a one-off effect of any single walk.
The sample was small and specific, elderly women rather than a general population, which is a real limitation worth naming rather than glossing over. But the direction of the finding matches a much larger body of exercise-science literature showing that regular moderate aerobic activity, walking chief among it, tracks with lower baseline cortisol over time. Of the four claims in the original note, this is the one doing the least exaggerating.
Part of why this claim travels so well, I think, is that it asks so little of you. Nobody has to hit a personal record or master a new skill to walk. The barrier to entry is close to zero, which usually makes a wellness claim more suspicious to me, not less, since low-effort promises are exactly the kind that get oversold. This one seems to be the exception, at least at the population level: the effect is modest per session and genuinely cumulative, which is a less exciting story than a single transformative walk but a more honest one.
Dancing and the nervous system: smaller studies, a real signal
This is newer territory, and the evidence is thinner than for walking, but it points in a consistent direction. A recent study of 150 college students with depressed mood, split across dance styles, found that a modern dance intervention produced significantly higher heart rate variability and greater markers of parasympathetic activation, the “rest and digest” side of the nervous system, than classical dance, ballet, or a no-intervention control group. The researchers linked the effect partly to tempo and partly to the free, less rule-bound expression that modern dance allows compared to more codified forms.
I have a personal stake in taking this one seriously. Ecstatic dance and 5Rhythms, both built around unstructured, self-directed movement rather than set steps, have been part of how I regulate for years, long before I read a single study on vagal tone. It’s satisfying, if not conclusive, to see the research pointing toward the same unstructured movement that made the difference for me: less choreography, more improvisation.
Stretching and stored trauma: the claim doing the most work with the least evidence
Here is where I have to be the least generous. The idea that stretching “releases” trauma stored in fascia or muscle tissue has become popular shorthand, borrowed loosely from somatic therapy traditions and popularized well beyond what the underlying research supports. A recent academic review of body-based trauma claims, published in BJPsych Bulletin, found that studies of these approaches tend to have small samples, no active control group, and little follow-up data, and that none has demonstrated an advantage over established, evidence-based treatments like cognitive behavioral therapy.
None of that means stretching feels bad or does nothing. Plenty of people, myself included on a good day, feel calmer and looser after a slow stretch, and that subjective relief is real and worth having. What isn’t well supported is the specific mechanism, the idea of emotion physically lodged in tissue and mechanically released through a hamstring stretch. That is a metaphor doing the work of a citation, and it’s the weakest link in an otherwise reasonable list.
I understand the appeal of the metaphor, which is part of why I think it spreads so easily. “Trauma stored in the hips” gives an otherwise diffuse, hard-to-locate kind of suffering a specific address in the body, something to point to and eventually release. That’s a comforting structure for an experience that usually doesn’t come with one. Comforting isn’t the same as demonstrated, though, and the honest version of the claim is smaller than the popular one: stretching can help you feel calmer in the moment, through mechanisms we understand reasonably well, like reduced muscle tension and a shift toward parasympathetic activity, without that calm requiring anything to have been literally lodged in the tissue beforehand.
What the note got right anyway
I don’t think the accuracy of each individual claim is really the point of a note like that one, and I don’t want to be the person who fact-checks a piece of gentle internet wisdom into uselessness.
The actual argument underneath it, that movement is something you do for how it makes you feel rather than as punishment for what you ate, doesn’t depend on any single hormone pathway being exactly right.
I’d rather someone walk regularly for a slightly overstated reason than not walk at all while waiting for a peer-reviewed justification. I just think it’s worth knowing which parts of the story are load-bearing and which parts are doing more emotional work than scientific work, especially before repeating them as settled fact.
