Pollution rise could lead to skin allergies

With the rise in pollution levels, there is an increase in the number of skin disorders too. Though skin allergies and diseases have become common problems in cities, simple remedies can help people avoid them.

Skin is subject to various problems such as blemishes, infections and growth due to internal or external causes. While some of the causes are genetic, others are air and water borne infections. Also the exposure to ultra violet (UV) rays is generally associated with skin diseases. Some of the common ones are lesion (change in tissue formation), pigmentation, seborrhea (excessive oiliness of scalp), acne and eczema. Out of these seborrhea and acne are caused by hormonal changes in the body. For example, acne is one of the most common disorders, which primarily affects the adolescents as it can be caused by the increase of sex hormones, which takes place during puberty. Acne should never be neglected as it causes extensive scarring. Clinical and professional treatment is necessary. On the other hand, eczema is, in most causes, caused by environmental factors. Also, exposure to UV causes pigmentation of skin.

Eczema is a group of chronic skin conditions that cause skin to become irritated. There are many forms of eczema, but atopic dermatitis is the most common form “Dermatitis refers to the inflammation of skin and “atopic” refers to a group of diseases where there is often a inherited trait to develop other allergic conditions such as asthma, hay fever. It is caused by combination of hereditary and environmental factors.

Itching is primary and main symptom. Scratching then leads to redness, swelling and cracking, oozing out of clear fluid. This at time results in formation of scales and crusts. There may be variation in how disease presents itself but the common symptoms are itchy and dry skin, rashes on hand, feet, bends of elbows and knees and face.

One should protect oneself from direct rays of sun. Especially, two-wheeler vehicle drivers should use sunscreens and helmets. Normally, skin disorders get exacerbated in places where relative humidity is low. This causes the skin to be dry. Hence one should use cosmetics and moisturizers to the skin wet and oily.
