a. The mammalian central auditory pathway includes the cochlea, brainstem, thalamus, and auditory cortex. b. The frequency-following response (FFR), mainly generated in the brainstem, reflects all stimulus frequencies and additional ones not present in the input. The Neural Resonance Theory (NRT) model—incorporating the cochlea, cochlear nucleus, and inferior colliculus—predicts these extra frequencies. c. An oscillatory neural network model simulates dynamic pitch interactions and can infer implied harmonies in melodies, such as in Bach’s Violin Partita No. 3. Stable harmonic tones (E, G#, B) persist, while others fade quickly. d. NRT also predicts tonal stability ratings. In both Western (C major) and North Indian (raga Yaman) music, NRT predictions (blue) closely match human ratings (grey). For raga Yaman, NRT outperforms duration-based models (purple).
