The voters in the York County, PA, Dover School District have spoken. Eight of the nine members of the school board, which has tried to institute the teaching of Intelligent Design in the science curriculum, were defeated for reelection. The ninth seat was not on the ballot.
I am now eagerly awaiting the judge’s decision in the civil suit filed against that defeated board, which is promised by year’s end. Meanwhile, the voters have made sure that their school district will no longer be the poster child for antiscientific backwardness in the curriculum.
That title has been successfully reclaimed by the Kansas State School Board, whose revisions of the state science standards have lost them the right to use copyrighted materials from the National Academy of Sciences and the National Science Teachers Association.
I’m glad my fellow Pennsylvanians have decided that York County is not in Kansas anymore. In Kansas, apparently, they have not yet discovered The Man Behind the Curtain of Intelligent Design. He is not the great and powerful Wizard of Oz, but rather the great and unknowable Intelligent Designer.
That’s bad theology! If I were God, I’d consider that a serious demotion.
