Linguists debate whether all languages are descended from a common ancestor. This can’t be completely true, since many sign languages have been invented out of whole cloth in modern time (Nicaraguan sign is a famous example), as was, to a meaningful extent, Hawaiian Pidgin.
However, students of history know from the ancient Greek historian Herodotus that Phrygian is the first language. According to his writings, an Egyptian king by the name of Psammetichus ordered that two children “of the ordinary sort” be raised in an isolated cabin without exposure to language. At the age of two or so, the children began to speak Phrygian, which was taken as proof that Phrygian, not Egyptian, is the world’s earliest language.
This study is a great example of why experiments need to be replicated before they are taken too seriously.

The Grand Anicut, also known as the [ta:கல்லணை] Kallanai, is an ancient dam built on the Kaveri River in the state of Tamil Nadu in southern India.
Kallanai Built By Karikalan, A Chola King. Dear all,
We tamizhians have welcomed all the cultures in our state.

PARSI SHRINE (FIRE TEMPLE)
=========================
The first Parsis arrived in Madras in 1795. To meet the needs of the community, the Madras Parsi Panchayat began collecting monthly contributions from members for a Mobed Fund from 1887; the fund was intended as much for maintaining a priest (mobed) as for eventually establishing a place of worship. A significant contribution towards this was made by Sir Dinshaw Petit of Bombay in 1896 and this enabled the purchase of a plot of land in Royapuram where the community had established itself. However, plans to build a temple in this plot were slow in taking off.
Dear all, there are so many shrines of all religions in tamizh nadu. We always respect them all.
Berenike, Egypt: The excavations of a Ptolemaic-Roman settlement at this ancient port on the Red Sea coast have yielded an inscribed amphora fragment. The inscription is in Tamil and written in the Tamil-Brahmi script, precisely dated by stratigraphy to 60-70 CE. The reading is ko(R)Ra-pumaan, the name of a chieftain . The pottery inscription bears evidence to the Western trade of the Tamils in the Sangam Age.
The period (BCE 60-100 CE)
The Roman historian Strabo (c. 1st century BCE) mentions the embassies sent by the Pandyas to the court of Augustus, along with a description of the ambassadors from Dramira. He also gives various details about the trading relationship between the Tamil kingdoms and Rome. Pliny the Elder (c. 77 CE) refers to many Tamil ports in his work The Natural History. The Periplus of the Erythraean Sea (c. 60–100 CE) gives an elaborate description of the Tamil country and describes the riches of a ‘Pandian Kingdom’:

Kal thonri man thontra kalathay mun thonri mootha kudi”- a second century literature- means when before stone became sand in earth the tamil tribes were formulated
The another name of sivan is SINTHAMANI means one who meditate.
The word “sinthanai” itself is a full form which was made with applying mental power by a tamizh writer in ancient time. Do not fool the innocent people of india the owners of sind land. One who could not pronounce the tamizh word in its pure form are claiming. Those aryans who really had been royal to the tamizh land had also done good poetry work. We have accepted them too. Do not forget this. The basic concept of indus valley civilisation is “meditation” and whoever is following are all humans. I dont know about others and their KARMAM (seyal) & OZHUKKAM (discipline). Those who use their brain know about them very well.
SINTHAMANI is a tamizh name given to Sivan but actually, the exact ancient tamizh meaning of this word is “the rain that never poured”…sintha+mazhai+neer…..never poured+rain+water….i never thought that i would one day explore this word “mani”….suddenly, i got the inner meaning of this word…i only had idea and meaning abt this word as “a precious stone”…..everything seems to me so Strange!!!!…..why am i here?
Dear,
Yojana is a word but in tamizh we have “yosanai”…. (“aalosanai” also)
chintha is a word but in tamizh we have “sinthanai” (sinthanai for sivan as he was meditating….sinthanai means meditating)
We also love all the languages their tone and expressions and their true nature. understood.
If the full of form of english is written in short hand form then it is for easy communication and for completing quickly the work and for easy translation. So, do not have the opinion that we have not the words you have written. Sanskrit scholars recently accepted the fact that they have borrowed or taken the words from tamizh. It is also written on net.
Soon after the very established civilisation tamizhian indeed was welcoming all culture …the only culture he welcomed wrongly was the culture of aryans…thats why we are suffering today. otherwise we are happy with all the good culture of this universe. The SOLE aim of the aryans was to give sufferings to the tamizhians since ages. It is a well known FACT.
No tamizhian is here humiliating any other language of this universe. Soon after forming words by uttering in the beginning the ancient tamizh people started writing so many literary works of world famous nature. so, try not to push this language to the corner as it was done before. Just because of your comment or my comment we are not going to gain or loose. Its about the antiquity of the tamizh language.
After all the whole india was once upon a time DRAVIDIAN land only. Because of aryan invasion only everything changed. No one is fool here. All are intelligent only. Some are very very CUNNING!!!!. The wrold shall come to know the truth. We tamizhians have accepted all the religions in our state. If you do not know the truth then find out. We are tolerant always. Those who do not tolerate others would only protest for selfish purposes. Continue exploiting….very good. God bless you!!!!!! I hope and am sure you are also an aryan.
just like “yokam” which has become “yoga”, “yosanai” has become “yojana”…yosanai has “aasanam” in it , the seat that gives again the meaning, the meditation under the tree banyan. Thalaiyanai means the “pillow”, so “yosanai” means “thinking” in tamizh.
Sanskrit is 100% older than any local language…
Tamil people are basically chauvinistic regionalists and believes evrything politicians tell them…Thats why they say such hilarious stupid things..Tamil oldest than sanskrit…Joke of the millenium!!!!
Think with common sense..All other dravidian languages are highly sanskritised..Kannada,Telugu and of course Malayalam comprise huge Sanskrit vocabulary…Tamil is only their neighbour..Then how can that alone be pure and resistant from sanskrit???Only fools will say Tamil is pure, oldest etc..Sanskrit is certainly the ONLY CLASSICAL LANGUAGE OF INDIA!!!!TAMIL GAINED IT THROUGH POLITICS…
English and all the languages of this world are LIVING still and they are also accepting their inspiration by appreicating other languages.
Why sanskrit is not living? why it is dependant still? It is a crime to enter into one’s home and rule them. Dont you have discipline?
Dear Anjaan(Stranger)
Dont act emotionally..better act wisely!
I would say that Sanskrit is Tamilized or Dravianised one RATHER THAN TO SAY Sanskritised.Sanskrit is the offshoot of Tamizh.First inhabitans of Indian homeland is Tamizh.Later part Ariyans entered and learned the language and culture from Dravidians and framed a local language Prakrit.Later prakrit with the influence of Tamizh and Iranian & European languages devised an artificial language Sanskrit which is never spoken and wold be ever spoken!Dont dump our foolish thoughts with little knowledge.Kindly read Primary classical languages of World BY Deva neya pavanar and works of Prof Hart and G U Pope and Alexander respectively.Tamizh is not only spoken in Indian Sub continent ,it has crossed the borders beyond land and ocean and it was spoken in Madagascar,Maldives,Srilanka,Singapore ,Mauritius,sINGAPORE AND parts of South Africa and Indonesia.Een our Tamizh tradition stands a testimonial to prove its ancient nature.Apart from this among 1lakh inscription from Indian ,about 55000 belongs to Tamizh expresses its literary richness. Most of sanskrit words are borrowed from tamizh.
Dear abdul thambi,
We always give respect to the emotions of all the people. Those do not want to give respect to our emotions would never think of respecting in future also. If they think that we non-brahmins are untouchables of the westerners and the europeans then we have the right to ask them the question why do they perfom puja for krishna and sivan and sai baba (a muslim or a hindu????) and mint money. They should only make a temple for a brahmin god only. I dont want to explain.
nothing to say.
do u hav any knowledge of language or u r jus blabbering as any uneducated road side guy at the coffee shop ??
read the history.. dont simply say. if oter languages r older. y didn they hav such history and literature as tamil ??
y didn gt 2 b choosen as classical language of d world ??

dear anjan dont hav emotion.really u r wrong.learn wel about the history b4 giv any coments.k.well educated people never says like u.u read the history then undrstnd d reality.again i say dont hav emotion then only ur mind can accept d reality.
yes the sentinels of andaman would come to tamizhnadu one day and mix their language and tell that their language is the oldest one. its about the domination and discipline and also the cunning nature. i never thought that i would come to know about the world full of hearts so cunning. i am getting lesson without paying fees.
Sanskrit is 100% older than any local language…
Tamil people are basically chauvinistic regionalists and believes evrything politicians tell them…Thats why they say such hilarious stupid things..Tamil oldest than sanskrit…Joke of the millenium!!!!
In fact Tamil may also have taken it’s full shape from sanskrit and prakrit..For example, they use lot of sanskrit words in Tamil films and all…Even words that they think is pure Tamil came from Prakrit ..Eg–Yojane [thinking] etc…
People like you in india are TRAITORS to the peaceful atmosphere.
bro… read n gain sum knowledge b4 u blabber in here..
in tamil v say sontha budthi irukannum ille na sol budthi ya vathu irukkanum.. hope my fellow countrymen wud hav unstood it..
either use ur knowledge if u hav n speak here.. or if u dnt hav any.. try 2 listen oters ideas…n start 2 blabber..
dn try 2 b fool by actin 2 smart w/o any knowledge of literature and history of any language..
entering into someone’s home and try to or forcibly write on the tongues of the people the artificial and most of all the selfish language sanskrit is a CRIME. Whoever trying still now ..can not be called as humans. Whoever trying hard to murder “tamizh” shall go deep into the “core” of this earth and would never come back. If ever tamizh would also go away from this earth then we would take away all of you with us too….Sacrifice for eternal bliss!!!!!
Its not that tamil is derived from sanskrit.. sanskrit is NOT a people’s language.. but language of learned. its the prakrutham which is the spoken language, and which formed the base for sanskrit..
We need to understand the fact that the evolution of grammar is NOT confined to any single language.. In my opinion, there were schools of grammer on those days, and the grammatical concepts were imbibed and customised by many different languages, including tamil..
Tamil might have its independant origin.. but as human civilization progressed, it imbibed so many words from prakrutham..
Even the word yojanai is a prakrutha word.. the tamil equivalent for chintha is “Ennam”..
To all Tamil fanatics,
The above stated comment is not mine..It is a comment written by a Tamilian itself inanother site..I have copy pasted it here…Tamil, like all other languages in this universe has accepted things from outside…Dont fool urself by believing that Tamil is godly and it has no external influences etc etc..Tamil and sanskrit are not islands…everything has exerted influences on each other from time to time..Be open to accept others.Stop this blind chauvinism like everything in the universe started or originated in tamil etc etc…What do u think?????Tamil is certainly graet, but dont think that others are fools…Nothing has 100% independentor pure existence or origins..Stop being clowns in front of others
These people don’t have any knowledge about history. Anyhow everyone knows which language is older. There is lot of proofs. If they need they can check in internet.
Tamil is older than all languages in India.
Dear amaran and all,
thank you for your comments
Tamizh is a great ocean and Sanskrit is merely a drop of it….it is jumping so childishly and it has to fall down again on this huge ocean for everything. Empty vessel always makes noise..like you do….we were silent all these years passed…but we had to write and explore because we could not tolearate the injustice shown towards us…we are otherwise very much calm and composed..those who are humiliating his mother shall learn some day the “great truth”…
gr8…Sanskrit is much older than Tamil..You have borrowed terms from Sanskrit and now claiming it’s rights…What about the other large number of Sanskrit words you use in Tamil films and all…I dont have time to state everything…
Just because some one used it in some old Tamil verse, wont make it Tamil word..You say such claims only because you are chauvinistic and closed minded to accept the greatness of other languages in the world..Tamil poets are said to have travelled himalayas, learned sanskrit texts and later translated into ur language..dats all..They have mixed sanskrit words also into it…dats it
One who copy in the examination hall would never accept the fact. He should be caught red handed. would the aryans with their atrocities no wonder accept it?
Tamizh in its full form and structure can never be cheated by nature.
HARD WORK means Dravidans and EASY WORK means aryans. TAMIL means HARD WORK Sanskrit means EASY WORK. The explanation is OVER.
Innocent and friendly and thoughtless tamizhians do not know the exact cunningness of a brahman who comes with sanskrit words to be pushed into the tamizh lyrics only to mix the poison and kill it gradually. What you have done is sin so far. Would you people like to continue? Just becos your sanskrit is dead, you people want to murder the mother who gave you shelter and comfort. What kind of mentality you people possess? Are you not still satisfied? Stop crossing the border. Enough is enough!!!!!
there are so many languages in india for you to destroy….why TAMIZH only?????
no you are a maduraite, from the capital of pandiyan king, you should not humiliate our mother tamizh, you get that. she is watching you closely, be careful!!!!1
Dear all,
In hindi the word ‘YAAR’ is used to call a friend and it is in tamizh.
the following words In tamizh and meaning
=================================
evar or yaar – who (with respect neutral gender .. can be used for both genders)
– this can be only used for only higher forms of life .. humans and gods
evan – who (withour respect – masculine gender .. higher forms)
eval – who (without respect – femininge gender .. higher forms of life)
edhu – who/which (neutral gender … lower forms of life – animals, other organism, machines)
Any thing other than humans/gods are represented only in the neutral gender. Male/Femal distinction is not applied to other animals, organism, equipments, etc. This is a big difference between Tamil and Hindi.
I can give lots of similarities between tamizh and hindi. I dont have time now. see you all.
QUSEIR-AL-QADIM, EGYPT, February 20, 2008: A broken storage jar with inscriptions in an ancient form of Tamil script, dated to the first century BCE., has been excavated in Egypt.
Dr. Roberta Tomber, a pottery specialist at the British Museum, London, identified the fragmentary vessel as a storage jar made in India. Iravatham Mahadevan, a specialist in Tamil epigraphy, has confirmed that the inscription on the jar is in Tamil written in the Tamil Brahmi script of about the first century.
Earlier excavations at this site about 30 years ago yielded two pottery inscriptions in Tamil Brahmi from the same era. Additionally, a pottery inscription was found in 1995 at Berenike, a Roman settlement of the Red Sea coast of Egypt. These discoveries proved material evidence to corroborate the literary accounts by classical Western authors and the Tamil Sangam poets about the flourishing trade between the India and Rome, via the Red Sea ports, in the early centuries CE.
Dear all,
I would go away from this place after some days…i can not say now exactly when…..anytime……Everything goes to sand but the truth shall never go to the sand. It is like the AIR. It would be wandering on this earth without end. It is IMMORTAL. Truth is also in need of PEACE.
Dear all,
Whatever be the religion it should first of all have “HEART”. Then only people would like to adopt. So far, i have found Christianity means “charity” work as well as “meditation”. Sikhism means feeding all the devotees with food and water. Islam means “meditation”. These religions do not cheat the people. But, in hinduism the sole aim is to cheat the people for money. Where is the place for meditation after all?
My telungu friend tells me if she goes to tirupathi the balaji temple then the temple priest and his people make them move fast they tell “ZARUGANDI, ZARUGANDI” means …move…. move. What kind of solace and peace of mind the people would get in that atmosphere? When we have God and Satan in our heart…we also need a place to sit and relax away from all the commotion of this world. Where there is no straightforwardness and kindness what would you get in return even though you keep faith in Almighty?
Just sit and think about a power that has no form. I have been trying to get the glimpse…but it showed me only the shadow of siva (suddenly it was there and gone) or saibaba (with milk can on his shoulder…i dunno why?) or mother teresa (with smiling face). It does not show its real FORM. It wants to tell us that PURITY should be in the place of worship and complete “surrender” and service to humanity is necessary.
nothing to say.
About the word ‘BHAKTI” the root word is in tamizh.
This word has been very much in usage.
It is Bhaththi for bhakti and the Bhaththtar for the Bhakta.
In Thiru-chanda Viruththam (79)
the last line goes thus:
“bhaththaraamavarkkalaathu muththi muttral aagumo’
The alwar by directly relating the bhaktha to mukhthi,
reveals clearly that “Bhaththan” is the Bhakthan.
So saying that bhakti is a sanskrit word is a “rumour”. Come for discussion and debate. Just by adding the sound ‘BHA”, “SHA” or “FA” or “GHA” wont make you claim the fame.
“patha vai” in tamizh means “just make it catch fire”…so, “pathi” in tamizh means the match stick or the aromatic stick (oothupathi)…so from “pathhi” only you have formed the word “bhakti”. …PATHHI the tamizh word indirectly used for devotion as “bhakti”…why should we change our tongue???? by the way, they have made it!!!! ..we are in need to go to the root of everything.
Dear nagendra,
thanks for clearing my doubts. I also belive that there is one supreme power which the aryans do not want to disclose and keep the people in darkness and grab the money from them. Good business!!!!!
Their efforts are great and still continuing and they are serving the “ever-lasting divine power” in a genuine manner. After all foolish people would always be foolish people. When God has created the foolish people he also created the cunning people also to test them all. I suppose He is very much satisfied about his creations.
Even in the temple of chidambaram(tamizh nadu), the priest lead all the devotees to a dark room to show vilvaa leaves and charge them also. Good Looting!!!!!!! Great robbery!!!!!!!
I must appreciate them all.
@ periya bhakthan
just shut up u fool!! Tamil is greatly mixed with sanskrit just like Malayalam, kananda and Telugu. It can be easily understood just by watching Tamil films and listening to songs..So many Sanskrit words you use..You dont hav any right to speak against Sanskrit..Sanskrit is the one and only clasical langugae of India..
Ironocally, your name,is also Sanskrit..undertstand???”periya” is Tamil, but “bhakthan”,Bhakthi” etc are pure Sanskrit words which are present in all other Indian languages..
Dear Indian,
Just because one has added a sanskrit word u can not say that sanskrit is still alive. If it dominates completely the literary work of tamizh or if a lyricist is adding sanskrit to a song e for communication then only you can say that sanskrit is alive.
In india number of films are made in tamizh, where are sanskrit films?
If you can understand tamizh then it is well and good, it will only improve your knowledge. Because of aryanisation sanskrit words have taken place in tamizh. If i use hindi words while talking it is because i had the habit of talking in hindi in north india and the influence would be there. I can only with efforts remove them.
Sanskrit and the its creators had been entering into our culture very silently with cunning motives. They can not survive for long. One who has wrong motives to exploit the people would face the wrath of the OMNIPOTENT.
Your efforts to defame the language tamizh would get suitable answer by nature.
Be loyal to land and the water. Very very smart and super thinker.
About VEERAMAMUNIVAR.
———————————-
Constanzo Beschi, also known under his Tamil name of Vīramāmunivar (Tamil: வீரமாமுனிவர்) or Constantine Joseph Beschi (in English) (8 November 1680 – 4 February 1747) was an Italian Jesuit priest, Missionary in South India, and renowned poet in the Tamil language.
Even though he was primarily a missionary, he is also known, in a broader circle, as one of the classical writers of Tamil literature. Besides composing a literary Tamil grammar, he also wrote a grammar for the common use of Tamil – the first to do so – which earned him the title of Father of Tamil prose. He compiled several Tamil dictionaries: including the Chaturakarati (சதுரகராதி), the quadruple lexicon containing words, synonyms, categories of words, and rhymes; a TAMIL-LATIN and LATIN-TAMILl-PORTUGUESE dictionary.
His greatest poetical work is the Thembavani (தேம்பாவணி) (the Unfading Garland), an extraordinary epic poem – 3615 stanzas long – on Salvation history and the life of Saint Joseph. It is considered a classic of Tamil literature. He also wrote a prabandham (one of the minor literature) called Kavalur Kalambagam (காவலூர் கலம்பகம்), a grammatical treatise called Thonnool (தொன்னூல்), a guide book for catechists with the title Vedhiyar Ozukkam (வேதியர் ஒழுக்கம்), and Paramarthaguruvin kathai (பரமார்த்த குருவின் கதை), a satirical piece on a naive religious teacher and his equally obtuse disciples. In prose he left us polemical writings against the Lutheran missionaries and didactic religious books for the instruction of Catholics. He prepared a vademecum for newly arrived missionaries.
Local traditions abound of stories of Beschi challenging Hindu ascetics and winning debates over them. Yet his Thembavani is proof that he had a positive approach to Hinduism, as he often uses phrases, ideas and myths characteristic of Hinduism. The same spirit of dialogue and admiration for the Tamil culture led him to translate and explain in Latin the famous Thirukkural epic poem of Thiruvalluvar (1730). This Latin work was an eye opener for European intellectuals, discovering truth and beauty in a Tamil literature. They also found it to contain many thoughts similar to ChristianityBeschi was no doubt one of the best known Jesuits of the 18th century in Tamil Nadu.
In 1968 the State of Tamil Nadu erected a statue for Beschi on the Marina beach in the City of Madras (Chennai), as a recognition for his contribution to the Tamil language and literature
Dear all, so, the connection between latin and the connection of latin to english is evidant. So, tamizh has been the inspiration for so many people earlier but details not known to people today.
Dear all,
When humans were created, there was only a SIGN language. Everyone had been uttering a letter or a word but…… was
there a history of literary work full of completed forms full of hard work applying the brain and mind power?
To create a word today is easy….for example take this word “FANTASTIC” if it is a newly created word for us then we should appreciate the creator of this word. If suppose it has the root word somewhere then also we should appreicate it. If we do not give respect to the hardships of the person who created the root word then there wont be justice in this world.
English is a language today with so many newly created words. But what about the old english…..it borrwed the words from Latin, German, Greek and from the plains of India. Nowhere it is mentioned that tamizh has been providing the root words. So, we should find out what is the problem after all? So, to exploit the whole world by mixing or making sanskrit as the universal language, the efforts of aryans could not be established. Their efforts for spreading their “HINDUSIM” could not be a success. Somewhere, someone using his brain created “CHRISTIANITY”. Before that because of protest against aryans “BUDDISM” and ‘JAINISM” bloomed.
All is well that ends well.
