The Personality-Culture Clash Hypothesis

Writing in the current issue of Transcultural Psychiatry, Cadwell-Harris (Boston University) and Ayse Aycicegi (Istanbul University) reported that American college students had the fewest self-report of psychiatric symptoms (such as depression, anxiety, antisocial traits) if they had an individualist personality style. Those with a collectivist style had more symptoms.

But for students in Turkey (considered a collectivist culture) the pattern was reversed. Here, the students who self-reported collectivist values reported fewer psychiatric symptoms.
