In this computer model, conceived by researchers from Penn State and Ludwig-Maximillian University, communications by small, self-propelled agents led to intelligent-like collective behavior. The simulation shows snapshots in time and displays droplet ripening, vortex-controlled aggregation and the merging of vortices. Credit: Courtesy Igor Aronson. All Rights Reserved.

There has long been debate in the scientific community about whether Mars had an ocean in its low-elevation northern hemisphere. Using topography data, a Penn State led research team was able to show definitive evidence of a roughly 3.5-billion-year-old shoreline with substantial sedimentary accumulation, at least 900 meters thick, that covered hundreds of thousands of square kilometers.

In this study, the research team tracked the locations of 25,000 tiny particles that make up a two-dimensional disordered solid. Groups of particles rearrange as the solid is deformed. This diagram depicts when particles are rearranged as the material is deformed in one direction (left) or the opposite direction (right). Particles with colors at the extreme end of the scale (yellow, blue) deform later in this process
