Space exploration

Vision of future solar cell fabrication on the Moon, utilizing raw regolith. Shown are robots that source raw regolith and bring it to a production facility, which fabricates perovskite-based moon solar cells. Later automated rovers or astronauts install the produced solar cells to power future Moon-habitats or even cities.

NASA’s SPHEREx mission will survey the Milky Way galaxy looking for water ice and other key ingredients for life. In the search for these frozen compounds, the mission will focus on molecular clouds — collections of gas and dust in space — like this one imaged by the agency’s James Webb Space Telescope. NASA’s New Space Telescope to Hunt for Ice That Could Harbor Life’s Origins

This photograph of the Jovian moon Europa was taken in June 1997 at a range of 776,700 miles by NASA's Galileo spacecraft. Slightly smaller than Earth's moon, Europa has a very smooth surface and the solid ice crust has the appearance of a cracked eggshell. The interior has a global ocean with more water than found on Earth.

Scientists Design Space Submarines to Hunt for Alien Life in Europa’s Ocean

The spacecraft’s record close distance of 3.8 million miles may sound far, but on cosmic scales it’s incredibly close. If the solar system was scaled down with the distance between the Sun and Earth the length of a football field, Parker Solar Probe would be just four yards from the end zone — close enough to pass within the tenuous outer atmosphere of the Sun known as the corona.

Astronauts on the moon in future will be able to use an emergency distress system designed by an international team of scientists.

A comparison of JunoCam data from April 2024 with imagery from the Galileo mission of the same area in November 1997 (greyscale insert) reveals a new volcanic feature on the surface of Jupiter’s moon, Io.

The galaxy cluster MACS-J0417.5-1154 is so massive that it bends the fabric of space-time. This causes the appearance of galaxies behind it to be distorted, an effect known as gravitational lensing. This natural phenomenon magnifies distant galaxies and can also make them appear in an image multiple times, as NASA's James Webb Space Telescope has observed. In this image, two distant, interacting galaxies - a face-on spiral and a dusty red galaxy seen from the side - appear multiple times, tracing a familiar shape across the sky. The fact that these galaxies are actively forming stars and that the face-on galaxy's spiral shape is remarkably intact indicates that their interaction is just beginning.

Webb Telescope Unveils Rare Cosmic ‘Question Mark’ in Distant Galaxy

One of the few galaxies with a well-studied stellar halo is our neighbor, Andromeda, depicted here in the graphic. The reason Andromeda’s halo can be investigated so thoroughly is simply a matter of distance, both being close enough and bright enough that we can see the full picture with our current class of telescopes.
