Fields Medalist Dr. Shing-Tung Yau Was Appointed Director of the Center of Mathematical Sciences at a China’s University

A university in the city Beijing of China –Tsinghua University formally established a Center of Mathematical Sciences on December 17, 2009. World renowned Harvard mathematics professor Dr. Shing-Tung Yau, who himself received a Fields Medal in 1982, was appointed the first director of the Center.

It is reported that the Center is a new-type of open research institutions. The primary mission of the Center is to build one of the world’s high-level research center and China’s cultivation base of high-level mathematical talents by promoting mathematical research. An expert committee of the Center consists of 34 famous mathematicians including the president of European Mathematical Society, academicians from United States, Australia, Denmark and China.

News in China reported also that in the appointment ceremony Shing-Tung Yau said he met a lot of students from China or Tsinghua University in foreign countries, and their style of study and attitudes are good. He considered these students are absolutely capable. They need learned scholars to lead them to engage in a careful training, to help them actually learn something, so that they can possess strong ability in the international competitive edge.
